Rysi / High Tatra

by MichaelFalk1969

There is a very beautiful, well-signed and fairly easy hiking trail to the Rysmi mountain summit which starts at Strbske Pleso. On the way up you should take a detour around the mountain lake of Popradske Pleso. There, you can also visit the "symbolical graveyard". This graveyard has a nice chapel and painted wooden crosses as remebrance to the mountaineers and hikers who died in the mountains.

The Slovak National Gallery

by Paul2001

The Slovak National Gallery is located in a very grim modern building. The collection is occasionally interesting but more so if you are fascinated with Slovak art. Most of the interesting pieces are located in the Gothic and 20th century galleries. Of course it is unlikely that if you are not Slovakian, that you will know any of these artists but still it is a good way to get somekind of introduction to the local artists. There is also a small collection of paintings by artists outside of Slovakia but there are no masterpieces even these artists not that well known to people not well aquainted to the masters.

Spissky Hrad ( Spis Castle )

by hundwalder

Encompassing an area of about 430,000 sq.ft., Spissky hrad was one of the largest and most important fortresses in eastern Europe. It was comissioned by Hungarian King Belo IV in 1209 AD, The castle was attacked by Islamic Tartars numerous times throughout the 13th. and 14th. centuries. Spissky was finally deserted in 1780 after being destroyed by fire. The castle is greatly weathered by the forces of nature over an 800 year period. However, unlike most of Europe's tourist popular castles, prettied up by numerous facelifts, Spissky Hrad is authentic medieval Europe.

Batisovske Pleso

by MichaelFalk1969

A very rewarding hike to the Batisovske mountain lake (ca. 1800 m). You start in Vysne Hagy at the parking lot; the path is then well-marked. The hike takes ca. 5 hours up and back again, first through woods, then with lots of open vistas until you reach the stunning mountain lake. The hike is exhausting but not difficult - no climbing involved.

Oravsky Hrad

by BruceDunning

This was a castle used since the 1400's to protect the area. It was overrun a some occasions. It protected the border between Poland and Hungary. It sits on top on a hill nearly 200 feet high, making it nearly impossible to overrun the fortress. Building took place over the years, and ws last rebuilt to live in and defend the territory in the 17th century. There is some story about a maiden imprisoned for 30 years inside the walls?
