Tatranska Javorina / High Tatra

by MichaelFalk1969

A small idyllic town near the Polish border with some nice wooden houses and a pretty wooden church. The church also features the tomb of the german count who owned the place long ago. There is a really easy hiking trail which follows a river to the mountain meadow Polana Pod Muranom. It is said that you can sometimes spot bears there - I did not (a pity).

Bratislava

by grayfo

Bratislava is the capital of Slovakia (Slovak Republic) and is one of the youngest capitals in Europe, a city of some 450,000 inhabitants located on the river Danube at the foothills of the Little Carpathians, some 60 km from Vienna, Austria.

Romathan Theatre

by ChrisAlexander

The Romathan is the theatre representing Roma arts and culture in eastern Slovakia. Every Tuesday afternoon there is a performance of music, dance and songs by the in-house company of singers, musicians and dancers who have toured around Europe and are well-established in Kosice. Expect to be uplifted by their wonderful low-key performances in the intimate space of this small theatre. Thoroughly recommended.

Popradske Pleso / High Tatra

by MichaelFalk1969

A peaceful mountain lake you can reach in an hours hike from Strbske Pleso. The water is so clear you can see the fishes in the water ! If you hike round the lake (ca. 1/2 hour) you should make a short detour to the "symbolical graveyard". It is dedicated to all people who lost their lifes in the Tatra mountains.

Bratislava

by MichaelFalk1969

Since low budget airlines chose Bratislava as a destination it has become quite easy to reach the Slovakian capital. Bratislava is well worth the visit, though it does not quite match Prague or Vienna. The old town center is dominated by the Castle and the St. Martins Cathedral, and the inner city is beautiful restored and features wonderful architecture like the Philharmony or the National Theatre. It is a charming place.

Levoca's well preserved city ramparts

by hundwalder

Most of Levoca's 750 year old defense ramparts and guard / defense towers are still intact. Photo 1 shows an intriguing section of the west ramparts. The photo was shot just before sunset. The adjoining buildings date from the same period as the wall. The spectacular watch tower which rises far above the valley floor enabled the sentry to spot the invading Tartar legions from great distances. In the background is eastern Slovakia's most unforgetable countryside. These medieval buildings still house many of Levoca's citizens.Photo 2 shows a guard tower and a section of the east ramparts. Note the broken window of the rundown ancient apartment building just inside the ramparts. An emaciated looking dog stood on the ramparts barking at me as I passed. There is much poverty in eastern Slovakia, and hopefully the situation will soon change. This is certainly no reason not to visit the region...

Kosice!

by lmkluque

Kosice is the second largest city in Slovakia, located in the valley of the River Hornad. It traces it's history as far back as 1230 when it was called, "Villa Cassa," and it's charming, old town center is an Urban Heritage Area and worth considering while deciding where to go in Slovakia. There are mostly walking streets in the old center and the configuration is pretty interesting. It reminded me of the island in the River Seine in Paris, except instead of Notre Dame there is Kosice Dom. Though in Kosice it is a road rather than a river surrounding this island, there is a trench, with flowing water running the length of it.Since the Velvet Revolution, many changes have taken place and most notable is the effort to refurbish the look of the buildings and to add lots of shops, restaurants and accommodations for tourists.Kosice is in the southeast section of the country and would be a...

Bratislava Castle

by Paul2001

Bratislava Castle dominates the skyline sitting on a hill overlooking the city. It is by no means a picturesque castle despite its setting. As you might expect by his location hanging over the Danube River, the castle has been strategical important and that there have been fortifications on this spot since recorded time(technically the Boleraz Culture). Bratislava Castle had been reconstruction with rise and fall of each regieme that dominated the this part of Europe. The castle played a critical role in the defense of the region during the Mongol invasions as it was one of the few fortifications that withheld their onslaught. The castle that you see today was mostly built during Renaissance times as the Hungarian Kingdom fell back to Bratislava (then Presslau) after they had been defeated by the Turks at the Battle of Mohacs. The crown jewels were then kept here. During the Baroque era...

The van Gogh - Building / Bratislava

by MichaelFalk1969

I have no idea if this building has a name at all, but it was truly nice. A run-down house with no window glasses - all the windows are filled with van Gogh - pictures. You find it next to St. Martins cathedral.
