The East Slovakian Museum in Kosice

by Paul2001

The East Slovakian Museum is a small but interesting museum dedicated to the pre-history of the region. The museum has a rich collection of stone age relics. Included are the remains of ritually buried. There are also exhibits on medieval life in East Slovakia. The star attraction of this museum is the the Košice Gold Treasure. This is a collection of gold coins minted between the 15th and 17th century. It was found in the ground by workers digging a foundation for a building in 1935. The Kosice gold treasure contains 2920 gold coins, three medals and a gold renaissance chain, 2,14 m long, weighing 590 g. Except one Greek stater, there are ducats and doubte ducats from 81 mints from various statesţand towns of Europe. No one knows for sure why the treasure was collected and by whom. They could have been collected by a supporter of the Hapsburg Emperor during the time of a rebellion...

Tatranska Lomnica. My favorite town in Slovakia.

by hundwalder

Another example of the picteresque buildings in the villages of the high Tatras. Buildings such as the one shown in this photo, appear by their architecture to be hundreds of years old. However, many of them are less than 20 years old. Tradition has been honered in the development of the Tatra communities.See my other tips for directions to these mountain villages. Fine Slavic and Italiano restaurants abound. You will love the prices. Many excellent and cheap lodging options.

Famous wooden church of Kezmarok

by hundwalder

Located immediately outside of Kezmarok's fortification ramparts are the two Protestant churches. The plain white stuccoed church with its roof of wooden shakes, is the famous wooden church of the city and region. Although the church looks very plain on the outside, the entire interior is filled with panels and cycles of some of the most remarkable ancient wood carvings in the world. During the Protestant movement that swept through the region nearly 500 years ago, the Catholic rulers did all in their power to keep their rivals in check. Protestants were not permitted to build their churches inside of the city ramparts, where they would be protected by them. For this reason the wooden church was built at the first available location outside of the city gate. The Protestants were only allowed to build their churches and art works out of the cheapest materials, which in this heavily...

Zamek Zilina in city of Zilina.

by hundwalder

Zamek ( chateau ) Zilina was originally built as a fortress about 700 years ago, but was converted to a chateau when it was no longer needed for defense purposes. The dominating feature of the chateau is the irregular shaped tower that rises up from inside of the unusually tall castle ramparts. The tower is shaped like a cylinder with a peculiar looking knob running the entire height of the tower, and jutting out from the side of it. This knob served as a primitive elevator shaft. There is an interesting art exhibition housed inside of the chateau, but unfortunately the grounds and the interior were closed during my visit. Zamek Zilina is located about 2 km. southeast city center in an industrial district. It is accessible by bus, but I don't recall which one. There is a nice public park surrounding the chateau that was once part of it.more later !

Trencin Jewish synagogue

by hundwalder

The synagogue is located immediately outside of Mierove Namestie ( Peace Square ), in the very center of old town Trencin. It is adjacent to the city gate. Construction on the synagogue began about 1910, but was seriously delayed by World War I. The architecture, dominated by the copper domes, shows a pronounced neo Renaissance influence, but also has many Gothic style arches. It is my understanding that this fascinating building is no longer used as a synagogue. Most if not all of Trencin's Jewish population was exterminated by the Nazis, who had free reign of Slovakia. The synagogue currently serves as a local exhibition hall. More later. Please be patient.

Medieval residential streets of Trencin.

by hundwalder

Many of the original medieval elements are maintained in the northwestern Slovakia city of Trencin. Shown in the photo is one of the narrow and winding roads leading up the steep side of hrad ( castle ) hill. 700 year old apartment buildings and rock walls of about the same age line the road. The timbered balconies of the houses are very interesting. In the upper center part of the photo is the forward turret of the castle. The medieval part of Trencin is confined to the city center on the castle side of the river. Across the river lies a modern industrial city.

Trencin castle standing guard over Trencin.

by hundwalder

Hrady ( castle ) Trencin, located in the western Slovakia city of Trencin, is probably the best preserved of Slovakia's many medieval fortress type castles. This imposing fortress is spread out over the tops of the tall hills overlooking old town Trencin and the river valley. It was one of the many formidable defense posts built to protect the Hungarian empire during the 13th. and 14th. centuries. The castle was given its present appearance about 450 years ago. The architectural style was highly characteristic of the region during that era.more info. soon to come.

The Church of St. James in Levoca

by Paul2001

The Church of St. James is the premiere attraction of Levoca's main square. This pretty church was built in 1400 and is the second largest Gothic church in Slovakia. The church itself, though interesting, is famous for the collection of art that it holds inside. Here is the largest wood carved altarpiece in the world. This amazing piece was carved by Master Pavol between 1507 and 1518. The altarpiece measures 19m by 6m and is eye captivating. It is accompanied by other remarkable works by Master Pavol and other local Gothic artists. Many of them deserve equal attention. The church also has many fine frescos that cover the walls and ceiling. In fact it is more proper to call the church a museum dedicated to Gothic religious art. Of Master Pavol, we know very little because of the fact that most of the town of Levoca's records were destroyed in a fire in the 16th century. Sadly photographs...

The Tartars!

by lmkluque

There is something special about Vysoke Tatry (High Tartars.) This part of the Carpathian Mountain range offers unspoiled scenery, fresh air and pure flowing waters. The famous healing Spas are found here and all the typical mountain and river sports as well as resorts attract the tourists. The Tatras are not the highest in Europe which hasn't anything to do with the sense of well being one can feel just visiting. It is not as well known outside of Slovakia but this is a place you should not overlook, even if mountain climbing isn't your thing. Of course, if it is your thing, attempt these mountains with great caution. There are very few easy trails and many more precarious areas, so take a guide and follow their suggestions. The weather is volatile and often deadly as the Tatras abruptly emerge, peaking at more than 6,500 feet above the villages and its conditions change rapidly. It is...
