"Hrad" Castles Galore!

by lmkluque

In the USA, we have no real castles so of course, they are a fascinating aspect to any trip through Europe. In Fance I saw a castle and in Denmark I saw a castle but in Czechoslovakia they were every where! Just on the road from Kosice to Vlachovo I saw two. I don't remember the name of the first I saw, but at the time it was being used to house artists and writiers. I didn't have a tour of the place, maybe that's why I've forgotten the name. Hrad is the Slovak word for castle, citadel and fort and the castles I saw were at one time all of those. It seems that the Tartars were avid invaders in medieval times and these massive structures were built to protect the feudal lord and all his minions from being ravaged. The "Hrad" was usually built high on a hill near a river and protected by a thick wall surrounding it. The castles I saw in Slovakia were more utilitarian and bucolic in...

Concerts Not Only In The City!

by lmkluque

Music plays a prominent role in Slovakia. It seemed that where ever I went, music flowed through the air. All types of music, much more than the typical radio blaring Rap or Rock. In Kosice I saw banners announcing Blues and Rock concerts and didn't think much about it, every city offers Rock concerts or Blues concerts or Jazz concerts. The Kosice Philharmonic or even the brass quartet in Levoca wasn't so unusual but then I went into the villages and heard traditional music with songs for the nation, the region and even for the village. That was pretty impressive to me. I couldn't understand the words so they were translated and each song told a story or revealed a custom which impressed me more. One of my relatives plays in the Kosice Philharmonic and he, along with a few fellow members formed a group, The Beggars. They go up into the mountain areas and play Bluegrass for room, board...

Lecova

by lmkluque

Between Poprad and Spiš Castle, in the middle of the Spiš region, on the southern slopes of the Levoca Hills is the preserved and ancient town of Lecova. Since the twelfth century this town had been an economic and market center, a place where gold and wood carving flourished. Because of Tartar raids, the city was fortified by medieval walls round the city. Some of the wall, several bastions and three town gates are still preserved.Through the centuries following, the city became embroiled in regional struggles with its rival town to the north, Kežmarok. Later still the anti-Hapsburg uprising led to its economic isolation and the beginning of it's decline. Here I see a similarity with the city of Brugg in Belgium. No, not the lovely canals. Rather the fact that both cities lost importance as a trade center, they both became isolated and for that reason, remained intact, without modern...

Namestie

by lmkluque

The Village Square, as seen from the top of the Cemetery Hill. However small a city, town or village, they all seem to have a "town square," which in this case isn't square at all. More like a football shaped island between two roads. Of course, there's even a belfry. These town squares are usually the most charming part of a town and should be visited. Kosice is the second largest town in Slovakia and it's Namestie has an island-between-two-roads shape as well as being beautiful and charming. In Vlachovo, the ravages of the past gave witness to an enduring inner beauty and charm. At the time of my stay in Slovakia, it was required that all foreigners staying longer than three days, report their presence in the town to the officials. I was saved this task by family members who were themselves, officialdom.

The Town Hall in Levoca

by Paul2001

The Town Hall of Levoca is a splendid Gothic turned Renaissance structure and is one of the most beautiful secular buildings in Slovakia. Inide there is a small but interesting museum that details the folk and civic history of the town. There are folk costumes on display and the usual exhibit about how they delt with criminals back in medieval times. The museum cost 40Sk to visit and was open from 9am to 5pm from Tuesday to Sunday.

Devin Castle, Outside of Bratislava

by Paul2001

Devon Castle is one of the finest monuments in the ficinity surrounding Bratislava. The castle ruins sit majestically on a large hill dominating the Danube River. It is remarkably old if you consider that the Romans were the first to fortify the hill. It was turned into what we think of today as a proper castle in the 9th century by the rulers of the Moravian Empire. The castle was eventually captured and occupied by the Hungarians. Eventually it's fortunes declined and the castle was a ruin by the end of the 18th century. In 1809, Napoleon's troops destroyed the place once and for all. Today the castle is being considerably excavated and restored. Several chambers have been opened up where there are very interested exhibits detailing the long history of the castle. These displays include Roman artifacts found amongst the ruins. There are also the foundations of a Romanesque church that...

St. Elizabeth's Cathedral in Kosice

by Paul2001

St. Elizabeth's Cathedral in Kosice is the finest church in all of Slovakia. It is actually suppose to be the eastern most Gothic church in Europe. St. Elizabeth's Cathedral was built between 1378 and 1508 and is the oldest building in the city of Kosice. The church as many fine works of art both inside and out. There are fine Gothic sculptures on the exterior walls, which were being restored during my visit (they should be finished in the near future). Inside there are great frescos along the north wall. Most important is the magnificant main altar with its three oversize statues and forty-eight panel paintings. It is amongst the finest works of art in Slovakia.

Zilina

We didn't see too much of Zilina, but came here for dinner on our way back to Trencin. The town has a beautiful historic center. Lovely churches and baroque buildings. The bars are packed here on weekends. I would recommend passing through or using this as a base to explore the Tatras and other parts of the country.

Visit Vlkolinec

by trisanna

Vlkolinec is a small village located in the Tatras. In 1993, it became listed as an UNESCO world heritage site, since this small town is full of well preserved traditional houses, some from the 15th century. Most of the old houses, are log homes. There are around 40 houses, with some new construction nearer to the top of the hill. The new homes are being built in the traditional style. One of the houses is a museum, but it was closed when we arrived in the town. One has to pay a small fee to enter the town and another if you want to take photographs. Be respecful, since this town is full of residents and i am sure they aren't too thrilled about the tourists. From here, you have lovely mountain scenery. It was a very scenic drive from Martin to Vlkolinec.

Visit Martin for Folk Costumes

by trisanna

We visited the town of Martin, since it has a wonderful collection of folk costumes from various regions of the country. The Slovak National Museum has some interesting collections, from early artifacts of the time, motorcyles, birds and folk items. We were interested in seeing the textiles. The museum is nothing special on the outside, but houses some interesting collections. Martin also has a literary museum, natural history museum (Turiec Museum), and others. Unfortunately, there isn't much written in english. The staff at the museum don't speak english, but can speak some German. They will let you borrow a two page description of the museum in english. Nearby is an open air museum of old Slovakian buildings or skansen. There is a beautiful old church and lovely houses. Some are open and are filled with traditional furniture. I felt this was the highlight of the trip to Martin.
