DIRECTION SIGN PARKOVISTE IN ORAVSKY PODZAMOK by matcrazy1 I never had more problems with finding a place to park my car even in centers/downtowns of cities where sometimes traffic was not allowed inside small, strict old town zone. There were uncovered parking lots signed by large "P" and direction signs "Parkoviste" (enlarge my picture) located in front of most points of tourist interest. Although they were sometimes a bit neglected even when were paid and not guarded. How much is parking? For example by Orava castle in Oravsky Podzamok in Oct 2003 it was: - motorcycle - 20 Sk - passenger car - 40 Sk - passenger car with "prives" (what's that? trailer?) - 60 Sk - caravan (trailer) - 60 Sk - bus 150 Sk Leave a Comment Theme: Car/Motor Home

TOLL ROADS INFO SIGN by matcrazy1 BASIC RULES 1. It's forbidden to sit in the front seat for children unless they are at least 12 years old and over 1.5 metres tall, 2. Buckle-up: seat belts are compulsory for front- and rear-seat passengers on all public highways, 3. Don't drink and drive: the legal blood alcohol limit is 0 mg !!! If you drink any alcohol you can't drive. 4. Speed limits are as follows: - 60 kph (36 mph) in built-up areas, - 90 kph (56 mph) outside built- up areas, - 130 kph (78 mph) on expressways, - 80 kph (50 mph) for a car with a caravan or trailer travelling outside built-up areas or on expressways, - 90 kph (56 mph) for motorcycles outside built-up areas. 5. Headlights must be used when weather slightly impairs visibility. 6. An International Driving License is valid in Slovakia, for me Polish driving licence was enough. POLICE AND TICKETS I noticed unmarked police cars (Skoda Favorit, VW Golf or Renault 21) with radar parked at the side of the road. Max. fine by police - 2000 Sk (maybe paid... in cash to policeman!). 300 Sk for breaking speed limit by less than 20 kph, 500 Sk for between 20 kph an 30 kph. FUEL Quite many gas/fuel stations close at 6pm and they aren't as frequent as in Western Europe or even Poland!!! And sometimes it was difficult to find them even in cities (Bratislava - downtown). Not all (but most along main highways) accept credit cards. Brands of gas/fuel - signs in use: Natural 95 - unleaded 95 octane, Natural 98 - unleaded 98 octane, UNI91 - special mixture for older cars (leaded), Nafta (or TT Diesel) - diesel. TOLLS To travel on expressways I had to buy (at border crossing point) and display a special sticker on my car's windshield. I paid 400 Sk for the sticker valid for one year. They were available in petrol/gas station and post offices as well. Notice that expressway is both freeway and 4(or more) - lane divided highway signed as on my picture (top-left). ME AND INFO TABLE AT ENTRANCE TO SLOVAKIA by matcrazy1 TRAFFIC :-) Road traffic in Slovakia even in summer weekends and on main highways was usually light or medium, I never stayed in traffic jams there. Many local, mountain highways were almost empty. Exception: rush hours on some streets of Bratislava. Watch for pedastrians walking along highways (add bicycles and very slow and old trucks). Watch for... livestock and deer/foxes on some highways. I have never met any brown bear there :-(, they were hidden somewhere. HIGHWAYS :-) :-( There are few motorways/freeways (signed D + number, like D1) and 4-lane highways. Main highways (two digit numbers) as well as secondary ones ( three digit numbers) are - to be honest - less bumpy than in Poland but it doesn't necessarily mean that they are flat. Local ones... it depends where. Mountain higway 520 was terribly bumpy and very narrow - for one car - in some parts and first of all very badly signed esp. that I drove there at night and... I got lost for a while. Drive carefully: local highways maybe icy even from late September till early May esp. in mountains, at night/early morning and in forests, snowy often in January and February. DIRECTION SIGNS :-( Watch direction signs even on main highways. A few times I got lost somewhere in Slovakia. The signs were not well seen, somewhat hidden and small, and often not placed properly (before, on and after a crossword). But quite new motorways/freeways were very well signed. IN EMERGENCY! Emergency phones (and speed limits) are written on info tables placed on entrances to Slovakia: Fire - 150 SOS (road service?) - 154 Ambulance - 155 Police - 158 Hmm... write the above numbers down or put into your cell phone memory card not to look for them in real emergency. Btw I think that Slovakia is safe country and area for driving visitors. Happy driving :-))) Leave a Comment Theme: Car/Motor Home

HIGHWAY E-77 IN VYSNI KUBIN by matcrazy1 That is the question! There are many advantages and disadvantages as well. I think that for many travellers it's the best choice - especially those who want to touch real Slovakia. And especially for those living in surrounding countries: Austria, Hungary, Ukraine, Poland, Czech and even more far Germany, Slovenia, Croatia etc. Although... it's your choise. TOP ADVANTAGES - you choose yourself where and when to go, you can be more flexible, - you save much time (= you can see more!), - you save money on accommodations (easier to find out the most inexpensive) and say taxis (or other public transportation), TOP DISADVANTAGES - driving maybe tiring (read below) and it takes time to get to Slovakia (but think what you can see on the way!), - you can't taste delicious Slovak beer as a driver :-), - low but anyway... risk of car accident, car theft/burglary (check my Warnings Or Dangers tips, please) or car damage, - you must pay for petrol/gas, paid freeways and car insurances. TOUR BUS IN ORAVSKY PODZAMOK by matcrazy1 I noticed quite many tourist buses on parking lots in numerous touristy places in Slovakia. The buses were usually from Slovakia and from Poland as well. I think that many Slovak tourist offices/travel agencies offer bus tours around various regions of Slovakia. I love more freedom (and more problems hehe) so I never take any tours excpet when necessary. Leave a Comment Theme: Bus

SK = SLOVAK REPUBLIC by matcrazy1 Most of cars registered in the Slovak Republic have a sticker placed on back windshield or back side of a car with letters: SK. The sign was obligatory to cross the border by Slovaks (PL for me). Each European country has 1-3 letter abbrevation used on car's stickers. Additionally SVK is Olympic 3 letter official abbrevation for Slovakia. Nowadays the cars have new registration tables with small letters EU (European Union), SK and small Slovak flag added. I always could see many cars from Poland (PL) and not so many from Czech Republic (CZ) driving around Slovakia. Leave a Comment Theme: Car/Motor Home

NO ENTRY (TRAFFIC) SIGN by matcrazy1 Whenever you drive a car in Slovakia watch road signs. Tip for non-European drivers: This round sign on my picture (white circle with red rim) in the whole Europe means: NO entry or NO traffic - even for bicycles unless otherwise stated on additional small table below. In Oravsky Podzamok this sign was put in front of aspalt walkway by parish church. Leave a Comment Theme: Car/Motor Home

NO STOPPING ANY TIME! by matcrazy1 Whenever you drive in Slovakia watch road signs. Tip for non-European drivers: This sign on my picture like in the whole Europe means: NO stopping any time. In Slovakia the ban works from the place where the sign is put on to the nearest crossroad or to the same sign with a table "KONEC" (the end) added below. In most touristy places like in Oravsky Podzamok for example I was allowed to park my car exclusively in designated and paid parking lots. Leave a Comment Theme: Car/Motor Home

the roads are OK I think. The motorways are comparable to those in western europe (just are not so busy), trunk and district roads are worse. The minor roads are not too good but the cars should withstand them without any damage - just the signs are often missing. Drivers: look out of unexposed bikers in the night. Otherwise, biking is widely spread and hitch-hiking is not problem. Campsites are also available. For maps see http://mapy.atlas.sk, slovak printed maps are really good (much better than those imported) and available in all bookshops. Leave a Comment
