Vysoke Tatry Things to Do

  • Destination or basic point of hiking

High Tatras are rich of amazing mountain lakes. One of them Popradské pleso can be a destination of easy hiking or a basic point for more exacting hiking or climbing. We decided reach this beautiful place from Strbske pleso by a red line hiking path. Less than 1 and 1/2 hour spent by walking in coniferous forest is especially pleasant in hot Summer...

  • View from Prince Hohenlohe's manor house

You absolutely mustn't miss it. Not many places offer such great views of the High Tatras without the necessity of any exhausting hiking. Here you can come in your car if you want. The day the picture was taken was a cloudy one so you can see only the Belianske Tatras with the mountain you probably recognise by now - yes, it's Muran mentioned in my...

  • The hunting grounds of Prince Hohenlohe

This is an absolute must-see if you are visiting Javorina. Standing on a hill just above the village there is a wooden manor house with hunting motifs built by Prince Kristian Kraft Hohenlohe, who became the lord of this estate in 1879 with the intention to live and hold his hunting parties there. To make them more interesting, he even imported...

This place used to serve hot meals, not a wide choice but it was something in the area where there is no other restaurant nearby. The next restaurant is in Zdiar, so we had to go there to have our dinner. What you can get there now is beer and other kinds of alcohol, an ice cream, and some other foodstuffs so it has become more like a shop. But...

  • Pizza in the mountains

The name escapes me currently, but I am fairly sure it is the only pizzeria in Stary Smokovec. Just off the main street behind a bar and next to the pool hall. It looks nothing from the outside (a very plain wooden door. like an office door) and when I opened the door there was a long corridor filled with wood. I almost just turned back, actually,...

Vysoke Tatry Transportation

  • Local train transport

This is the best way to get around Vysoke Tatry, it stops in villages at the foot f the mountains which are an excellent starting point for your hiking or walking trails. My advice is to buy a 1, 3 or 7 day train pass with which you don't have to worry about buying a ticket. You can buy the pass at the train station in Poprad or at any of the...

  • Electric Train

The modern electric train connects many of the small towns in the High Tatras and is a convenient and cheap way of getting around the area. We used it once to return to Tatranska Lomnica after our hike ended at Stary Smokovec.

  • Cog Railway to Strbske Pleso

To get to Strbske Pleso (Lake Strbske) where many High Tatra trails start, you can take a ten or so minute ride by cog railway from Tatranska Strba. Vysoke Tatry Shopping

All comfortHaha, it doesn't matter when you're in wilderness that you can't eat what you like such as cakes and sweets :) Strbske PLeso is full of shops and restaurants. There is a typical Slovak one where they serve greeeat dishes but the best place for gurmans is Tatranska Lomnica.

  • Charming old houses at Zdiar

Although Zdiar has a number of new brick houses, there are still many traditional wooden ones, and they are the nicest. Constructed of beams cleverly joined at the corners, they often have weather-beaten shingled eaves, even if the actual roof has by now been covered with tin. White stripes painted where the beams meet are characteristic of the...

This kind of horse-drawn carriage is extremely rare now, but this one is still being used by farmers in Zdiar mainly to transport hay. No matter how bumpy it got, the ride used to be a great...

Vysoke Tatry Warnings and Dangers

  • Extreme weather changes!

If you're off for a hike in Vysoke Tatry always pack warm and waterproof clothes even in summer. The weather in the mountains can change from sunshine to heavy rain or snow within minutes. I also recommend good hiking shoes, trainers are definetly not good enough.

  • Beware of cargo helicopters in action

It may sound like a funny tip, never mind. I myself don't know whether the danger was real or imaginary, but what happened to us then was certainly alarming, to say the least. That year we went to visit the High Tatras soon after a strong gale, which had uprooted or broken lots of Canadian spruce trees, which are not indigenous to the area and too...

  • Time it well

The trails in the Tatras are all marked and signposts tell you the approximate time you need to reach your goal. But time may be relative to where you are. Vysoke Tatry Tourist Traps

  • evaanna's Profile Photo

by evaanna Updated Oct 17, 2008

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

This is a trap that only a Polish tourist may fall into. When a Pole is looking for accommodation, he or she is likely to say to a Slovak landlady "Szukamy pokoju", which is a perfectly innocent sentence meaning "We are looking for a room." Polish is similar to Slovak and communication between people of the two nationalities is easy and pleasant.
Not in this case though. "Szukamy" in Slovak is a vulgar word for what in English starts with an f. I don't think we are allowed to use such words on VT. And this is exactly what I said when we were looking for accommodation the first time we visited Slovakia. Our prospective landlady grinned at that - we didn't know why - but wasn't shocked - living so close to the border she had heard it many times before. Not everybody has had so much contact with the Poles though, so just try to hold your tongue in time.

Fun Alternatives: Don't make too many assumptions about the similarity of the two languages and bring your dictionary with you.

Summer in Vysoke Tatry usually lasts from late May to begining of September but even in this season don't forget to bring some warm clothes, especially when you're considering to do hiking or any other outdoor activity. Also good hiking shoe are highly advisable. But don't worry if you forget something, there are plenty of good sports shops...

Vysoke Tatry Off The Beaten Path

Slovakia is a great country for cyclists: much less traffic than in the neighbouring Poland, good roads, but it is also quite hilly. You can't of course ride your bike in the High Tatras - that would be equivalent to suicide, but you can visit...

It must be a nice feeling arriving at one of these places to stay the night after a...
