Take care ...

by Skipka

Such the obvious dangers like in other countries like avoid dark streets of towns and take care of your wallet etc. :) No rudeness or racism but be careful when you travel by car/train off the beathen paths in the region with high density of Gipsies. Sometimes they should be dangerous or they should steal money to u. It is just a warning not the rule. I remember my friends from Germany were shocked travelling to Kosice from Hungarian border when they stopped somewhere out of the road for a bit of rest and finally there appeared many of Gipsies around them soon. So, it is not very nice feeling...

Fake food warning?

by matcrazy1

Probably most of you were many times warned not to eat or drink (while travelling abroad) anything except "safe food" like bottled water, food made by well-known producers and sold in restaurants, groceries and supermarkets etc. etc. Especially you were warned not to eat/drink any food or drinks on a street (unknown origin) except in Canada/USA and Western Europe. OK, but isn't it fake warning? Fifty, fifty, I suppose - depends on a country (hygiene customs) and... your stomach, individual sensitivity. Slovakia seems to be a safe country in this matter, I think.Look, in Slovakia I ate "syrove korbaciki" bought from street vendors many, many times and nothing bad happened to my stomach - never. They pay attention to hygiene making and storing home-made food, I think. So, don't take the food warning too seriously unless you don't want to taste some delicious food. More, a few times (once...

In the forest

by ChrisAlexander

There are such things hidden in the forests of Slovakia that only fairy tales speak of. I was amazed at the size of this toadstool. And its spots! Looks tatsy, but not edible as far as I know. The day I found this beauty I also found nearby a perfect antler that had fallen from a deer's head.I took it home, but left the toadstool.

Highway police and speed limits

by matcrazy1

I have quite different impressions on Slovak highway police. I crossed a line painted on a large and EMPTY parking lot in late 80' (communist Czechoslovakia that time) and I was immediately ticketed by very, very rude police officer (they were called milice that time - VB) who was crying that it's not messy and trouble-making Poland but orderly Czechoslovakia and so on. He scared me a lot. Very unplesant event. In late 90' I almost parked my car in forbidden place when unexpectadly police officer came and... asked me what I was looking for and... directed me to nearby parking lot. Quite different behaviour. Did they change from devils to angels? Or he was employed after say 1990. Never mind, better to obey traffic rules, especially parking bans and speed limits. Slovak police maybe very hard about it.There are road signs with speed limits and important emergency phone numbers at entrances...

Don't drink too... fast :-)

by matcrazy1

Slovak beer was delicious and addictive, believe me. Additionaly it was inexpensive, over 30% cheaper than in Poland in 2000. Once I was invited to celebrate my friend birthday in Zuberec (south-central Slovakia). We were in a group of maybe 40 friends - exclusively guys (at age say 25- 50 yo), far away from our wives, fiances, kids and far away from our gossiping hometowns. Very funny and relaxing (each guy - and woman, too - needs it, I am sure... at least from time to time) but sometimes it maybe... dangerous hehe. So we started with Zlaty Bazant 12 (Golden Pheasant) we bought in a grocery before. After 5 beers (2.5 l) I had to take longer break. I was lucky to find this fence on my picture :-). A few of us drank Slovak beer too fast and went to sleep too early. So, either they lost much and I lost much as I coudn't speak with them. Behave, please. Talk, dance, sing, enjoy your time...

Dangerous rocks and cliffs

by matcrazy1

There are a lot of limy rocks in Slovak mountains, many with deep and not fenced cliffs - esp. in Mala Fatra and Tatra Mountains. Be carefull, do not walk close to their edges not to fall down which would be mostly fatal for you.Just in case you survive and have a cell phone call: ambulance - 155, Mountain Rescue Service (Horska Sluzba) in Vratna and Terchova (Mala Fatra) - +421 (41) 5695232,police - 158,Hmm... I was told that hospital in Zilina was quite good :-).

Service with a smile

by ChrisAlexander

Visiting, you will no doubt encounter people in the ‘service industry’ as you travel within the country. Try not to be put off by unhelpfulness or surliness. Although Slovakia doesn’t exactly go out of its way to advertise the fact, the country does have a lot to offer visitors and tourists, but unfortunately some Slovaks are unable or unwilling to use this to their advantage and see it as a benefit to all concerned. If you get to know a Slovak person, you’ll feel a difference. On a personal level, Slovak people can make life seem rosy (even if things around them are not). Enter any relationship that involves services and transactions necessary to ease your passage, then you might wonder what you’ve done to make the ticket seller or shopkeeper’s day less tolerable. People will treat you exceptionally well if you know them personally. If you want...

Dangerous bridges

by matcrazy1

There were quite many simple bridges over local rivers and streams in mountains of Slovakia. Sometimes they were built of wooden tiles with wooden handrail on one side like this one on my picture (in Mala Fatra Mountains). But sometimes there was only a trunk of a tree put over a stream.Notice that wooden bridges have limited resistance. Don't swing in the middle of a bridge and if you are in a larger group walk across the bridge one by one.

Kingdom for smoking cigarettes

by matcrazy1

A lot of people (majority, I think) smoke cigarettes in Slovakia. I could see even kids, say 15yo or so, smoking cigarettes in public and nobody cared about it. Cigarettes are more and more expensive although still much cheaper than in Western Europe. There was a lot of cigarette smoke inside local restaurants/pubs/bars and many of them were not properly venilated; locals opened windows instead. Usually there was non-smoking room in a restaurant/pub but quite often there was only "non-smoking table" which meant that non-smoking folks were in real forced to breath the same air as smoking. More local restaurant/pub (esp. "hostinec") usually meant more cigarette smoke. Surely there were many restaurants (esp. in hotels and touristy places) with well seperated areas for smoking and non-smoking guests.Signs:FAJCIARI (look at my pic) = for smoking.

Taking pictures at bad light

by matcrazy1

Slovakia is not very sunny country esp. in mountains, except in summer. It is not so easy to take a good picture in bad weather, dark daylight and in sunny days as well if you notice large contrasts between shadows (trees for example) and sun-lighted areas. My top 5 advices:1. on sunny day avoid taking pics in midday, better just after sunrise or before sunset,2. avoid making pictures with objects of large contrast (white and black),3. use 100 DIN film at sunny days and 400 DIN at bad light (or change it in your digital camera if possible),4. use manual white-black balance if possible and if you know how to do it hehe, 5. keep smiling :-))) and follow the links below.MORE:- Digital Photography Review - the world's best internet service on digital cameras;- ShortCourses - a complete guide to digital cameras, digital photography, and digital video;- Digital Photography.
