You should not leave Slovenija without trying this cake.
The most famous ones are from the pastry shop at Hotel Park in Bled.
It consists of thin crispy dough, eggs, milk, vanilla scented sugar and whipped cream.
Simple ingredients, hard to make, delicious!

I came here without any expectations, mostly to meet a virtual friend of many years. I'm glad I met her, although it was a little awkward. I was with someone who had no connection to us and that may have cramped our style somewhat. But no matter. I met and liked my friend from Ljubljana. We spoke in English. We went for a good lunch together, and my travelmate, who doesn't speak English, told me later "Your friend has a lot of charisma" -- that made me happy. She sure does!

I didn't make any earth-shatterings discovery in Ljubljana but I liked the place. I always like finding myself in a city, especially after a few days in a small seaside resort like Piran (which was great but small, you know.) I especially loved going to a very good Mexican restaurant with Slovenian flair on the first night. The food was great and so was the service and we had money to spend, everything was dandy!
I took a lot of photos that first night but they didn't turn out too well.

I think I sort of felt I was in an unknown part of the world for me and I didn't know how to deal with it, or with the persons I was with. Another one of those places where I'll have to return to get a better feel for the place.

Coming to Slovenija from Austria, you can choose the international border crossing Ljubelj in Karavanke Mountain
Driving on the road full of turnings towards Trzic, you'll pass a village Podljubelj, also worth to stop. Not far away is the Tominc Waterfall, in the vicinity of which mercury was excavated until 1902.

If you come to Slovenia from Austria, you'll pass an international border crossing Ljubelj. This is the Slovene end of tunnel through Karavanke Mountains.
On the left side of the photo, there is Zelenica, once very popular ski slope. Usually the snow last till May

  • When you come to Slovenia you will find Slovene people (Slovenci) as very kind and friendly people. They are always prepared to help you. If you're in trouble, if you need help, if you need any info about anything, they are here to offer as much help as they can.

Slovene nation is small (about 2 millions live in Slovenia ) but their heart is opened and they welcome anybody to their house. Slovene hospitably is known all over the world.
Almost everyone speaks English so you won't be lost in foreign language country.

Just in case , there are few Slovene Words :

    Please - Prosim.
    Thank you - Hvala.
How much is this ? - Koliko stane ?
    Goodbye - Nasvidenje.
    Hello - Pozdravljeni.

So don't hesitate to visit Slovenia .

    View of Mt. Triglav from
    Vrata valley
    by snorril
The Vrata valley, on the way between lake Bled and Krjanska Gora is really beautiful. It is the home of Pericnik waterfall, which really is three waterfalls, and that one is great - and free.

Another reason to visit the valley, for those of us not daring or time-limited people who don't manage to climb Triglav, it offers tremendous views of the Big One. At the end of the road is a hotel with a restaurant and from there you can walk further into the valley until you are literary at the roots of Mt. Triglav. Really fascinating sight, even though we didn't quite make it to the roots.

I think that Vrata valley is one of the starting points for climbing Mt. Triglac. When we were there in mid-May I don't think it was possible, there was quite a lot of snow in the slopes and when we were there we witnessed several avalanches.

Kranjska Gora is associated with reaching the top of mountain with a friend, yet alone. With passion for life and idealism that link people even in silence. With being able to do your thing and think your thoughts freely. That's not always easy for me with someone else. A great feeling of communion with nature, human and physical. I think I'm learning something.

I don't remember the name of the summit we climbed, but we took two chairlifts from Kranjska Gora, as high as we could go, then climbed to the needle, 1,600m. Not terribly difficult but you have to hang on to tree roots or rocks a lot. Watch out! Many roots are in soft soil and offer no safe grasp.
At the top, it's above the clouds and you are really *in* the sky. You can see all the way to Austria and Italy.

We missed the last chairlift down and the descent was long and rather difficult, since there was no trail where the chairlift passes. The effort and concentration actually did more for us than any easy and fun activity ever did. Some things change you :-)

I suggest not to drive on the main street. Drive passing the town Tržic. Tržic is an old town for centturires home of the shoemaking, tanning and blacksmith's trades.
Follovwing the marks and the Map above, you'll reach lodging house Smuk

At the edge of the Pannonian plain lies the attractive Radenci Health Spa.
Radenska ''Three Hearts'' mineral water, which at the beginning of the century was served at the imperial court in Vienna and at the papal court the Vatican, is now known all around the world.
The photograph was taken in one of Radenci's museums which shows how Radenska's Three Hearts bottles have been changing through the years.

Below Mount Kanin there is a picturesque Soca River Valley and the resort town of Bovec where the world's best kayakers and canoeists compete and fly fisherman pursue the leusive Soca trout.

As well Soca is known as the cleanest Slovenian river.

This picture was taken in Most na Soci, very interesting village which is split by the river Soca (most = bridge).
