SLOVENIAN CEMETERIES

by balhannah

I know I am not the only one who loves browsing around Cemeteries. Here, in Slovenia, it was no different, infact, it was interesting to see how different Cemeteries were here to Australia where I come from and to other Countries. The one in my photo had this interesting wooden sculpture outside the cemetery. Outside the walled Cemetery, was a lovely Church [closed] and then inside was another Chapel and the graves.I really like the way, they have a little flower garden in each plot infront of the headstone. It was very pretty, and I could see each one had been attended to lovingly, no weeds here!I wish I could remember the name of the Village this Cemetery was in, but I can't, sorry!

Vrata valley

by snorril

The Vrata valley, on the way between lake Bled and Krjanska Gora is really beautiful. It is the home of Pericnik waterfall, which really is three waterfalls, and that one is great - and free.Another reason to visit the valley, for those of us not daring or time-limited people who don't manage to climb Triglav, it offers tremendous views of the Big One. At the end of the road is a hotel with a restaurant and from there you can walk further into the valley until you are literary at the roots of Mt. Triglav. Really fascinating sight, even though we didn't quite make it to the roots. I think that Vrata valley is one of the starting points for climbing Mt. Triglac. When we were there in mid-May I don't think it was possible, there was quite a lot of snow in the slopes and when we were there we witnessed several avalanches.

Lake Bohinj

by snorril

Bohinj is not as glamorous as Bled but a must see nonetheless. It is much larger and the dropping mountains around it's shore give it a dignifying look.Bohinj is the place for adventure sports in this area, with rafting, horse riding, paragliding and cave exploring trips departing from the lake. We took a 'rafting' trip down the Bohinjicka river. Not the most exhilarating trip but quite fun and really cheap. The Savica waterfall was a disappointment however. It was way to 'developed', probably due to its popularity, and the only way to view it was through some iron doors from a man-made viewpoint. There is also a fee. I think I liked every other waterfall in Slovenia better than that one.

Wine hills of Goriska Brda

by lotharlerch

Visit the hills of Goriska Brda in the western Slovenia near Nova Gorica. An area not too touristy but already detected. These hills are full of wineyards, often topped by churches with some farmhouses around. From the tops of these hills you have wonderful views over the surrounding area, the plain of Friuli in Italy just a few kilometres away at your feet and at the horizon the Adriatic Sea near Grado in the SW, the famous Dolomites in the NW and the somewhat less famous but equally nice Carnian and Julian Alps in the North. Often wine hills open nice sceneries but not too often such impressive ones. Wine connoisseurs among you probably know the Collio wines from the Italian Friuli near Cividale and Cormons. But few of you probably know that far the biggest share of this region is in Slovenia and called Brda with at least equally good wines.

Yes,living myself not really...

by lotharlerch

Yes, living myself not really far from this country I saw its famous sights like Bled etc. on various visits, of course, and I can state that all what you find on the excellent VT Slovenia pages about this fantastic rich variety of Slovenia, from the Alps to the Mediterranean, Pannonian air with some distinct spice of 'italianità' and noticeable Germanic influence on solid Slavonic and Central European ground, so much interesting on so small distances and so easy to reach - it is all true. But you would nevertheless miss a lot if you would restrict yourself to the principal and popular sights.

Pumpkin seed oil

by ursa9

This delicious dark green oil is made by pressing the roasted seeds of pumpkins. It is widely used and produced in eastern parts of Slovenia (Prekmurje and Slovenian Styria (Štajerska) region). It has a nutty taste and is very healthy. Pumpkin seeds are a good source of vitamins A and E, essential fatty acids (Omega 3 and Omega 6), iron, zinc, potassium, and magnesium. Pumpkin seeds may also promote prostate health and help with urinary tract infections. For 1 litre of oil you need to press around 2.5 kgs of dried pumpkin seeds. We use it on all kinds of salads and it's difficult to imagine eating salad with sth else. It is especially good with fresh lettuce, cabbage, beans (normally brown or string beans with chopped onion) also, tomatos. We use it in a dressing together with apple or wine vinegar, salt and water. Black pepper is often added to beans.

Tipping

by ursa9

A very nice VT-er reminded me that there is no tip regarding tipping in Slovenia. Well, here it is. :-) You are not expected or obliged to give tips to waiters. But you may do it, if you feel so, especially if you are satisfied with a service provided and if there is a small amount of money to be returned to you. The best advice would be: act according to your feeling... P.s. One exception to this rule: if you go to a gas station and there is a youngster trying to wash your car windows (which may look even worse thereafter :-)), he/she expects a modest tip from you.

Public phones - only phonecards!

by Airpunk

Please be aware that public phones in Slovenia take phonecards only - no coins! Phonecards are for sale in major places like train stations as well as gas station and newspaper shops.Oh yes, and I almost forgot. Many public phones are out of order. I needed four tries to find one that was working. Others weren't able to read the card or to built up a connection. One of these evil machines even told me that I was committing phonecard fraud... I don't have a cellphone and do not want any. I had one for two years and it was more annoying then useful to me: My boss called me to work overtime and friends and family called for the most stupid things like just to ask where I am or what I am doing right now. As I didn't want to feel like in Orwell's "1984" anymore, I gave up my cellphone on January 25th 2005. Back to Slovenia: I wanted to call home on a sunday evening with all shops in the city...

No language problems - but please show respect

by Airpunk

One of the great advantages while travelling in Slovenia is that you will rarely encounter language problems. Most people speak english and among the younger ones you will seldomly find someone without english knowledges. Many elderly people and people living close to the austrian border speak german, while italian may only be useful in the coast towns.Anyway, plase be so kind and ask the person you are talking to, if he or she speaks english. "Ali gavorite anglesko?" (Do you speak english?) is considered as a polite way to begin a conversation and shows the respect you have towards the slovenian language. Remember that the language is a strong part of the national identity. I really do not like to speak german during holidays (it robs me of my holiday feelings), but I had to do it twice. Once, because a waitress in Maribor did not speak english. A second time, in Postojna, because my...
