Krjanska Gora

by snorril

Ahhhh, we loved it up in the north western part of Slovenia. Krjanska Gora, famous for it's skiing competitions during the winter, is a great place to visit with numerous accommodation options. We looked at quite a few guest houses and they were all excellent. The views around the town are magnificent and it is probably possible spending many days there hiking, cycling and relaxing. There seemed to be quite extensive cycling paths around these parts and I read that they were funded by the EU. The views around are not discouraging.

Lake Bled

by snorril

Bled is a diamond. Beforehand I read that is is touristy and that Bohinj is much better and bla, bla, bla. Don't listen to that, visit both. The views of Bled, either from the castle, where you avoid the rather ugly hotel buildings at the lake's northern shore, or from the Velika Osojnica, where the stunning mountain skyline keeps your attraction from the ugly hotel buildings, are among the most spectacular you'll ever see. This is a picture perfect place. Don't miss the hike up Velika Osojnica (765m), the views from there are tremendous. You don't even have to walk all the way up, the best views are along the way on the viewpoints.Another nice walk is around the Lake. It takes about an hour and offers different views of this magnificent place.

Skofja Loka

by snorril

Skofja Loka is one of Slovenia's oldest towns and a really beautiful one. Mestni trg. is a charming pedestrian square lined with old houses. Above the local castle guards the town. The town is supposed to be even more splendid at night when the castle is illuminated. On a hill opposite the old town is a church that offers great views of the town. The walk up there takes about 15 minutes and is really worth it.

Ljubljana

by snorril

Ljubljana is really nice and in a way feels more like a town than a city. Strolling around the old town is great fun and the Ljubljanica river gives a great setting for numerous restaurants, bars and cafés.Being only late May the street life probably hadn't taken off yet but there were still some artists performing at the squares and we could do a little people watching at the cafés. We were fortunate enough to have our own local guides who lead us to all the hip places. We didn't spend that much time in the city but tasted a couple of excellent restaurants and bars.I noticed that Ljubljana is a really clean city and obviously well looked after. The large Tivoli Park offers a great escape from the city and the Serbian restaurant and the ice cream café are definately well worth the visit.Another peculiarity I found in Ljubljana and Slovenia in general is that pink seems to be a really...

Cuisine and wine

by speedy77

Slovene cuisine is unique and varies from region to region. Various pasta, dough and meat dishes, particularly sausage and salami, are characteristic of the whole country. More than a hundred different types of dumplings are made in Slovenija, while POTICA, a sweet made from rolled pastry stuffed with nuts, raisins and spices, is another speciality. Doughnuts (with tasty fillings) are also very popular - especially at Trojane). In eastern Slovenija, the outstanding dish is the delictable layerd cake PREKMURSKA GIBANICA, best with a fragnant semi-dry or semi-sweet wine from north-eastern or eastern Slovenija. In the Karst, you must try air-dried-ham PROSCIUTTO, which goes very well with a glass of ruby-red TERAN wine. In western Slovenija, meals combine meat, fish and vegetables. This dishes go well with pleasant fresh red wines and a variety of white wines (Zelen, Pikolit, Pinela). The...
