    WANDERING AROUND

    by novsco61 Updated Jun 7, 2005

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Hiking is one of the most popular forms of enjoying an active holiday.

I can recommend a trip to the Triglav valleys of Vrata, Kot and Krma. Stretching from Mojstrana to the foothills and then on to the summit of Triglav (2864metres), Slovenia’s highest mountain. Situated in the Zgornjesavska valley and in the four small adjoining valleys of Planica, Pisnica, Krnica and Martuljski potok, there are 40 kilometres of well-kept footpaths, some of which trail through the Triglav National Park.

Several signposts will tell you when you enter the Triglav National Park. All footpaths are marked on the map and allow you to tailor routes to reflect your own specific needs. .A footpath leads you from Kranjska Gora along the beautiful sun-kissed slopes of Karavanke or in the opposite direction through the Stan valley towards Podkoren with magnificent views of the Julian Alps.

The Krnica valley is accessible via the winding road leaving Kranska Gora and ascending towards Vrsic. Turn off this road at the second bridge over the Pisnica river and let yourself be led along the glacial moraines and grassy slopes to the mighty foothills of the Prisank, Razor and Skrlatica mountains.

From Kranjska Gora, another picturesque footpath will lead you to Tamar; the route begins at the start of the Vitranc chairlift and takes us along the meadows (winter cross-country track) and up what used to be the railway embankment through the forest into the Planica valley and pod Poncami to the alpine hut in Tamar. A section of the land covered by the map belongs to the Triglav National Park, a secured nature spot which is to be preserved in its original beauty.

Krnica Valley - 1.45 hours' walk

The Velika Pišnica Valley is surrounded by the peaks, all of them two-thousand metre high. It can be reached by taking a narrow cart track which leads us to the Krnica Valley. There is the Krnica cottage (1113m) at the foot of the magnificent rock walls of Prisank, Razor and Škrlatica.

    Vršic - 2.30 hours' walk

The highest mountain pass of Slovenia can be reached by the asphalted road past numerous cottages: Mihov dom, Koèa na gozdu, Erjavèeva koèa and Tièarjev dom. By the road there is the Russian Chappel at approx. 1200 m above the sea level.

The home suppoters have expected much more of their guys, ecpecialy from Primoz Peterka, but it wasn't their day. Though, they have found consolation in drinking huge quantities of Lasko and Union beer.
To tell you the truth Ribafish, VTer from Zagreb, have beat them. He had so many beers and have start supporting Bulgarian competitors who didn't even come here.

Nice ski flying hill Velikanka or something where we got to see world records this year. Made by finnish Matti Hautamäki, 231 m.
Next year 2004 there'll be World Championships in ski flying instead of season finals in wc.

Equipment: Sun glasses, some flags to cheer for your favourite team and other necessary equipment.
Good shoes, as it can be slippery and muddy.

    SKING

Planica is the cradle of ski jumps and ski flights.

Planica's fame goes back to 1936, when ski jumper Sep Bradl first passed the limit of 100 m.

50 years later the limit of 200 m was also surpassed here in Slovenia.

World Cup Ski Jumping competitions are traditionally held in Planica every month in MARCH.

The first thing you should do...

by DocJules Written Oct 31, 2004

Equipment: If you visit to walk your first trip should be to the Tourist Information office in the centre of town. Buy their walking map of the area. It has numbered walks which have numbered wayposts all around the surrounding area. Some are a little difficult to locate, so be warned, but the map is the standard map that all the tourists use and provides the topic of converstion when you arrive back at the hotel as a lot of the placenames are unpronounceable!

The guy, Matti H., have reached 231 meters, a new world record. Can you imagine that, flying on the skis, a tiny piece of wood, 231 meters or maybe even more. What a result.
