Buses around the area are very good, but sometimes people get confused about where they are going.
As a general rule they have a sign in the window, the first place name is where the bus has come from, the centre name, if there is one, is where the bus goes via and finally the last name is where the bus goes to.
eg. Ratece - Jesenice - Ljubljana. In this case The bus has come from Ratece and is going to Ljubljana via Jesenice. The via is also in smaller text.
On the bus timetable there are different letter codes to tell passengers what days the buses run, the table is as follows.
V = Every day
SP = School Holidays
S = School days
SONP = Saturday, Sunday and holidays
SO = Saturdays
NE,P = Sundays And holidays
D* = Workdays Monday to Friday
D = Workdays Monday to Saturday.
Please Note also that from Sept 1st every year a new timetable comes in to operation with fewer buses.
Bus drivers in Slovenia in my opinion are some of the best drivers I have ever come across, just take a trip over the Vrsic pass on the bus then try and drive it yourself in a car and you'll see why.
From the UK try flying Ryanair from Stansted to Klagenfurt then a short bus No 40/42 to Klagenfurt Annabichl or Hauptbahnhof. A train to Jesenice Via Villach or Rosenbach then bus to KG. Also Easyjet from Stansted to Ljubljana. Buses from Ljubljana Brnik go via Kranj, change bus at Kranj then catch bus that says Ratece Planica on the right hand of the sign in the bus window.
buses do not go direct to Bled, the nearest they go to Bled is Lesce Bled train station, 10 mins from Bled on a different bus .
About EUR 1.60 to get to Klagenfurt station by bus, then the train cost EUR 24 return Klagenfurt to Jesenice and the bus to KG about EUR 3 each way these were prices in 2004. Try to be quick off the train or you may miss the bus to KG. "And don't forget at Villach the train may split so make sure you are on the right half ".
I have found Ryanair to be reliable and can recommend them for short visits, thanks to Gordon Brown Easyjet are reducing their number of winter flights.
You can book a transfer direct to Kranjska Gora from Lubljana Brnik or Klagenfurt at a cost of about EUR 190 return for a minibus that seats 8 or about EUR 150 for a car that seats 4.
E-mail : firstname.lastname@example.org, they can pick you up at the airport and take you direct to KG or other places in the area. Transfer to KG is about one hour from Klagenfurt and Ljubljana. Taxi Mertelj are 100 % reliable.
For More information see http://www.taxi-kranjska-gora.si/english/
You can of course fly to Ljubljana Brnik with Adria, but Ryanair are much cheaper unless you are on a package tour.
Unfortunately Ryanair ceased flying to Klagenfurt daily on 29/10/05 and only fly 3 days now. You can fly to Trieste with Ryanair but the transfer from here is 190 Euros each way and takes about 1hr 45 mins, Taxi Mertelj do this also.
Don't miss that bus, some local buses around some of Slovenia now sometimes have a tendancy not to stop at bus stops.
I had just returned from my 7th visit and I missed 2 buses.(never missed one before)
The first was an Alpetour bus missed at Begunje, we wanted to go back to Kranjska Gora via Jesenice, it was hot so we were waiting in the wooden bus shelter, the bus pulled in and went straight around before we could stop it.
The second was over the Vrsic pass at Bovec, we were waiting to go from Bovec back to Kranjska Gora we, thought "oh no we won't miss this one " so we were at the stop 15 minutes early and some other people were waiting, an Avrigo bus pulled in and the people in front asked if it was going to Ljubljana "NO" said the driver he closed the doors and drove away before we could even ask. This was our bus and it went Ten minutes before the scheduled departure time.
Also in Bovec alpetour buses to Kranjska Gora leave from the other side of the road to Avrigo or so it seems.
So be weary, always be early and ask very loudly where the bus goes to.
This is the exception rather than the rule and most bus services are excellent.
From Manchester ( Summer only ) or Manchester via Frankfurt to Ljubljana ( brnik )
Ljubljana City is 15 miles away from airport in wrong direction for Krajska Gora
Take bus or Taxi to Kranj bus station( not to be confused with Kranjska Gora ) about £12.00 in Taxi but only takes 15 minutes.
Bus would be cheaper but very irregular
Good pub on bus station. Take bus via Bled and Jesenice to Kranjska Gora (same bus all the way (about 1hour 15 minutes ) Ryanair (crap) and Easyjet (also crap ) from May 2004 also fly to Brnik from Stanstead, London. Trains are not the way to do Kranjska Gora from brnik as much as i wanted to be able to travel this way.
Klagenfurt in Austria is also a good route.
Fly to Kalgenfurt, Bus to town centre.
Train to Villach, change train for Jesenice and Bus up to Kranjska Gora, about 30 minutes. it sounds like a lot of messing but make it an adventure
So you haven't go the faintiest idea where Kranjska Gora and Planica might be?
Try this link :
Find Ljubljana, go direction Kranj, then Bled, then more north-west and it should be somewhere there in the remotest corner of Slovenia, right at the border with Italy & Austria.
