Daily activities planning

by sdb

Having now spent two visits to Maribor in the company of Mr Vuckovic (http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/5d3a9/) I have been able to make some observations about local customs as regards daily activities planning.Firstly, one must wake up completely drunk and almost incapacitated. One must then go for a large lunch which typically will start with salad and then moves onto either pizza or grilled meats. One must drink either beer or slivovica or, more usually with Mr V, both.By this time the visitor (and the host) will be pretty much three sheets to the wind.It is normal after lunch to try to get some sleep - it is also normal to fail at this owing to having to see to some unforseen task which Mr V will have to perform. This takes one forward to the evening meal: following anything between 5 and 7 course all washed down with some of that wine from the adriatic coast (Koper, I think), it is...

Lace

by olja1234

A sample of lacework - An AppleOnce, Idrija region was very poor. Men work in the mine (quicksilver) and women, usually a housewifes, had to find an extra earnings. Their new occupation was lacemaking. The first document about lacemaking in Idrija dates from 1696. In Idrija Museum is an exhibition of very nice laces. Worth to see!.

Dual

by Enzyme_X

Slovene language is one of the few living languages that still uses dual. And I think only slavic languages used dual. But Slovene is the only language that's official in some country. You wondering what dual actually is? It's a grammatical numeral. Most languages have only singular and plural. Singular using when talking only about one thing, plural when talking about more than one thing.Well, we use dual when we talk about two (a pair) things and use plural for three or more things. One of the thing that makes slovene very hard to learn.

Dialects

by Enzyme_X

In Slovenia leave less than 2 million people on a rather small area and yet we speak many different dialects. There are at least 32 different ones, assembled in 7 larger dialect-groups, which makes us one of the leading countrys in the world.Such diversity in language is a result of centurys-long influence of neighbour countrys to differnet parts of Slovene teritory. Slovenia is also very mountainious country which means that in some parts language development took it's own way. So, all this results in that a Slovene from the seaside can hardly understand those from Panonia although they live just 300 km appart.

Flowers

by Enzyme_X

Let me just quote one of my friends: ''House is not a house, if there are no flowers decorating windows or balconys.'' It's true. People here love to put flowers to decorate their homes. Sometimes you get the feeling that some neighbours compete which one will have more bautiful flowers. When the spring starts, people plant flower so the bright colours replace the months of dark winter.

Slippers

by Enzyme_X

If ever happens that you'll be invited to a slovene home, don't be surprised when the host offers you slippers. It's a habit here that you take off your shoes when entering into someones home. In every home you can find a drawer full of slippers that are just waiting for the guests. You don't have to worry, if your shoes are dirty + you'll feel much more comfortable in slippers then in those heavy shoes.

If you happen to be spending New Year´s in Slovenia, or with Slovenians...be aware that it is a tradition of good luck to take a lick, or a bite, from a smoked pig´s nose. Yup, I´m really not kidding.

St. Nichola's Church

by croisbeauty

The St. Nicola's Church in Novo Mesto. In my opinion this is one of the most beautiful churches in whole Slovenia and it worth of visiting. Inside the church, on the altar, you can see painting by famous Tintoretto. In case the church is closed, just ring at Bishops court..
