Traditional Homemade Pirhi Eggs

by KristaB

Back in the last millennium, egg paints were not so easily available, so people figured out how to make their eggs look prettier. This method is well known in many European countries. No wonder Slovenia joined EU so easily. You need exactly quite some onion peels - preferably red ones, then some eggs and a pot.For decorations pick some lovely flowers and leafs, but choose soft flat ones.Place these "stencils" on the egg, insert it carefully into a sheer nylon stocking and tie a tight knot.Pot - layer of onion peels - eggs - onion peelsAdd cold water, slowly bring to boil, cook on a low heat for 5 minutes and leave to cool in that pot. To achieve this mesmerizing shiny effect, rub on some pork fat while the eggs are still warm.

Pisanice - Fragile and Beautiful

by KristaB

Pisanice eggs are made by piercing the raw eggs, blowing out the content, and then decorating with ornamental patterns. Some use the scraping technique - coloring and scraping off the paint. The other, more demanding method is to cover parts that should not be colored with hot wax in several steps to achieve multicolored effect.Pisanice eggs can be purchased in souvenir shops, they last forever - if you don't break them!

Lace - Weaving threads of past times

by KristaB

One of optional courses in primary school is lace making. Traditional craftsmanship is passed on through generations and is getting even more popular today. It takes a lot of patience, so I was really impressed to see kids that are usually playing with computer games enjoy such a demanding work. These two girls were showing their skill during yearly Open Doors day at our local school.

Slovene philharmonic building in Ljubljana

by GalaxyTrevel

This is among the oldest music societies in the world, having been founded in 1701. The Society boasted honorary members such as Beethoven, Paganini and Brahms. Mahler also lived in Ljubljana (1881/82) and worked here as a conductor. Today its orchestra is the mainstay of musical life in the country.

by anaiis

Although you can find liberal people living here, please, remember that this is extremely conservative country. If you are a gay or a lesbian, you can be in danger for just walking around, holding hands. There will be remarks, maybe even physical attacs. You can find your shelter on Kersnikova 4, club K4, on Sundays. Recently there was a song, chosen to represent Slovenia on Eurovision. After our TV announced the transvestite group 'The Sisters' to be winners, avarage people in Slovenia were horrified. The Sisters became hot topic in public on-line forums and magazines. They were looked at with disgust. They were called pedophilles and such things. They were acused of cheating on the contest. Director of show program had to resign. More than decade ago, women in Slovenia were usually topless at the seaside or sunbathing near the lakes. This has changed a lot. You wont be fined for doing...

Sounds of Slovenija

by Pete_Barnett

Traditional music in Slovenia is a kind of Polka style with the accordian being prominent. This has been developed over the past 50 years by the Avsenik brothers into what is now called "Oberkrainer" music and is very popular outside of Slovenia in Germany and Austria. The most famous rock band from Slovenia is "Laibach" who are part of an arts co -operative. Much of their work is project based. They did a good album of Beatles covers. Some of the early stuff is a bit weird, but try listening to "NATO" or "Kapital" which in my opinion are two of the best.On the popular side, there are some interesting pop singers. I really like the singer Mia Znidaric (kind of jazz base); Don Mentony Band; Botri and Magnifico. An upcoming group "Terrafolk" won the BBC world music award this year with a mix of ethnic styles incorporated in their music. The "Big Bang" store at the BIT centre in Ljubljana has...
