The easiest way to arrive in...

The easiest way to arrive in and leave Koper is by bus. There didn't use to be a border between Trieste and Koper until the last century, so this explains the large numbers of Italians in Koper and Slovenes in Trieste...one result of this is the good bus sevice between the two cities...according to the timetables, there are 17 buses a day, and the trip takes about an hour. Passport checks are little more than a formality, so the border is very quick. One thing to remember is that Koper in Italian is Capodistria, while Trieste is known as Trst in Slovene. For Ljubljana, there are buses every few hours from the bus station, while for Piran and other coastal towns, you can wait for one of the frequent buses from behind the market building. Koper is a port city, so I suppose there must be possibilities in arriving by ship...
The town centre is fairly compact, so no bus is needed while sightseeing. The medieval core of the town used to be an island, which explains why the modern areas of koper are separated from the old by parkland which has been reclaimed from the sea. The bus station is a couple of kilometres south of the old city, and maybe a taxi or a bus would be useful to get there...otherwise, it is a fairly dull walk down a dual carriageway.

There is a train station that connects Koper with Ljubljana and other cities, as well. See the time table on the web

Taxi!!

There is a wide choice of taxi in Koper. They usually gather at main bus station or near the open market. You can call it 24/7. A ride around Koper is 500 SIT. Koper-Izola is 1000-1500. Izola-Portorž shouldn't be more then 2500 SIT

Reaching There...

I reached Koper by my friend's car. It was amazing seeing the sceneries in Slovenia when somebody was driving next to you.
It was from Trieste. First I saw housing areas, then all green.
Then, as I expected, the sea, the beaches & tanned bosies.
It's easy to reach/depart from Koper, by buses especially as the services are excellent.
Every 20 minutes or so to Izola, Strunjan, Piran & Portoroz.
About 17 buses per day except on Sunday to nearby Trieste in Italy.
Koper also can be made an excellent base to explore Istria Peninsula in Croatia.

Koper’s train station is located about 1km south-east of the Old Town so it’s a bit of a walk if carrying a backpack or suitcase. The building is a pure relic of the communist era that hasn’t seen a lick of paint or any repairs for quite some time. It’s a fairly quite place as there are only around 6 trains to Ljubljana every day and takes around 2.25hrs. There aren’t many facilities here except for a few luggage storage lockers, horrible plastic seats which luckily are near some much needed a/c units and toilets which again need serious repair. The arrivals and departures times and details are posted on the wall near the entrance and a useful map of the town is also nearby.

The first thing you should know about the bus station is that there isn’t one! Well, it’s actually located inside the train station on the right as you walk in. This is where you can pay and reserve tickets but you can also get tickets when you board the bus. Buses travel regularly along the coast to Piran, Izola and Portoroz. There’s a timetable posted near the station entrance plus some of the stands have details as well. You may also be approached by some of the nearby taxi drivers who will offer you a lift in a mini-bus taxi along the coast for the same fare as the bus (750SIT). I did this when I went to Piran and it’s much quicker than a bus but the driver is always looking for passengers on the way.

Buses also depart for Trieste at 6am, 7am, 7.30am, 10am, 12pm, 2pm, 4pm, 5.30pm, 8pm Reserve your ticket in the train station.
Buses also depart for Ljubljana at 4.56am, 7.40am, 11.20am, 12.30pm, 1.15pm, 2.38pm, 5.05pm, 7.30pm. There’s also one bus a day to Zagreb at 4.56am.

There are several buses that operate from Portorose or Piran to Koper every day. The bus stop is not very far from the town center.

Koper - Slovenia

It is a good solution for the next visit - a cruise. You just have to check the Mediterranean lines to choose a program that crosses the Adriatic. I think that for me it will mean a second (at least) visit to most places, but it is a different approach, and Fernanda never seemed so enthusiastic with the idea. Who knows?
