Although Ljubljana is not a great place during the winter it gets very beautiful place as Christmas and New Year's are approaching. Streets and squares get decorated with thousands of lights, you can hear music on the streets and there are many people walking around. Some manifestations take place in the open and there is also Christmas market where you can buy tons of useles (or not so useles ;) ) things or just wander around.
Fondest memory: Check the photo about it. ;)
Fondest memory: One of my fondest memories of Ljubljana is definitely the Christmas - New Year period, when they put up all decorations in the Old Town. The decorations seem to get better and better with each passing year, so when December turns up I'm always eager to see what's new. For 2001 they have really done a wonderful job - houses in the Old Town were outlined with tiny white lights and so were all 3 main bridges across Ljubljanica (Triple, Shoemakers, Dragon). Large Christmas trees were standing in Preseren, Town and Upper squares, all dressed up with tiny white lights, while all other trees were decorated with blue and green lights. Bridges, churches and important buildings were also illuminated blue. Cute stalls for souvenirs, food and drinks (including cooked wine and medica) were put up along the right bank of Ljubljanica river (Cankarjevo Nabrezje) from Triple Bridge towards Shoemaker's Bridge. There were also stages for live music both in Preseren and Congress Square (I didn't see anyone perform though, since we left for Holland on 26th December). Sitting at the top of all this was the Castle - this year it changed colours - from winter blue to eeire green, warm yellow, fiery red and purple. To add more fuel, the entire Castle hill was shining with lights like a giant Christmas tree. Quite magical, I have to say. The only real setback this year was the weather. No snow at all, and as I heard from my friends who stayed in Ljubljana for 31st, foggy weather. That's quite sad because the firewoks display from the castle are magnificant. Anyway, you can't predict the weather - both in 1997 and 1998 there was a big snowstorm right on the New Years Eve which added up to the atmosphere. After we returned from our own 2001 celebrations in Holland, Irena and I, together with a friend of ours took a stroll through the Old Town and took a few pictures. You can see the rest of my pictures in the tavelogue New Year decorations.
