Daytrip to Bled
One of the most famous tourist spots in Slovenia is the picturesque Lake Bled. It is situated at the foot of the Julian Alps; about 55 km northwest of Ljubljana. Bled can be reached by train or bus.
The lake is surrounded by mountains and a steep castle hill. Slovenia's only island is situated in the middle of the lake. It is home to the the Assumption of Mary Pilgrimage Church, which can be visited by boat.

A fun day out
Whilst I had booked a car for 1 day of our trip, we decided to test out LJ's public transport with a day trip to Bled.
It was a piece of cake, a bus leaving every hour I think - stopping off at a couple of places on the way but only taking about 45 minutes.
Bled was beautiful and with plenty of buses going back, we had no pressure on us to squeeze everything in within an hour or two.
As it happened, we shared the bus journey with a couple of Aussies on their way round Europe and they elected to walk up a steep hill and walk around a little museam at the top. We decided to be different and went for a walk around the lake - very bracing but pleasant all the same.
Halfway round, we stumbled upon a very nice fella doing painings of the island church in watercolours so we snapped one of those up from him for about a fiver.
After the walk, we decided to have a couple of drinks in a little place next to the main Hotel Golf and then off back to the centre of town where we stumbled into an Irish Bar! After a pint of rather dubious Guiness we found a really nice pizza place just by the bus station before our bus - all in all, a very enjoyable day!

Bled - Slovenia's top picture-postcard destination
Bled is Slovenia's best known picture-postcard tourist attraction, so-much-so you think that it was designed just so that visitors can marvel at it. The small town is surrounded by the Julian Alps which are home to the Triglav National Park. Bled's main feature is its lake which is the location of Slovenia's only true island known as Bled Island. Around the main part of the lake lie a few large hotels that were built from the mid-19th century onwards to house the growing amount of tourists that were flocking to the area. The other main attraction is Bled Castle which is perched on a steep cliff more than 100m above the lake. It dates back to the 11th century although most of what now stands is from the 16th century. The views from it over the lake, town and surrounding mountains are wonderful. Another natural wonder to visit is Vintgar Gorge which lies about 3 miles north of the town where you can walk along the Radovna River through the gorge whilst watching the raging torrent of waterfalls and rapids.
The town is an ideal day trip from Ljubjlana as it's only about 55km (30 miles) NW from the capital. Come by bus as the bus station is near the lake and a short walk to the castle.

If you are in Ljubljana and you don't make the hour and half trek to Bled, man did you miss out! It is wonderfully blessed with a castle on a hill overlooking a gorgeous lake with an island containing a church. Man was that a long run-on sentence. But, you better run on to Bled, because it is breathtaking!!!
Lake Bled is truly beautiful. If you have the legs to get up to the
castle overlooking the lake the view is unreal, stunning.
The town is small, but ok for a few beers and a meal. Plenty of bars
etc. Not any more expensive, despite it being a ski resort, although
we was there in december and the skiers were not. I would imagine the
prices go up when the posh nitwits turn up in the ski season.
