Old houses on the bank of Ljubljanica river.
They are mostly renovated by new facades, so they offer a pretty nice view up to them. Both banks of Ljubljanica river is very lively nowadays. There are caffes, restaurants, shops...

You must - and will, there's no way out ;) - stroll along the banks of Ljubljanica - the true center of the town. I just never wanted to leave. Closer to the Preseren Trg, it is bustling with cafe-life, but further out it is quieter and more peaceful.

To the south of Tromostovje near Ljubljanica river there is most beautiful pedestrian zone of Ljubljana. It hosts numerous cafes and some interesting shops. It is great place to walk. During weekend art and antique fair take place here.
Start on Preseren square and walk Ljubljanica river as long as you like. Use bridges to cross it and cafes to enjoy it.

Ljubljanica is 41 km long, and some 20 km of its course lies underground in caves, so the river has seven names. The river divided in two part the town and along its sides you can see fantastic example of buildings in Secession style. You can also see interesting bridges like the Triple Bridge or the cobblers' Bridge.

A walk along the river is a good way to discover Ljubljana. I recommend you to go from Preseren square till Fuzine (about 6-7km). Unfortunately I had no time enough to do this, but I went till the sportiv park.
Also are available excursions by boat - day and night.

The Ljubljanica River flows quietly through the centre of Ljubljana with hardly a ripple on it as I only ever saw one tourist boat on it! The river is also known as The River of Seven Names and empties itself into the Sava 10km to the northeast of the city centre. About 1km further upstream from the Triple Bridge lie two canals - the Gruber (built in 1783) and Gradascica which meet the river.
It is believed that the first bridge across the Ljubljanica river was built back in Roman times, most probably somewhere between the present Cobblers' Bridge and Šentjakob Bridge. The medieval Ljubljana boasted two wooden bridges, an old bridge located at the site of the present Triple Bridge and the Butchers' Bridge, which was located at the site of the present Cobblers' Bridge. Architect Jože Pleènik redesigned the embankments with tree-lined walks.

One of the best places to walk in Ljubljana is along the streets beside the Ljubljanica River in the Old Town, which are lined by numerous cafes and restaurants. There are also frequently musicians providing entertainment for the passers-by.

In Ljubljana, river Ljubljanica is definitely the centre of everything. Lazy weekend meetings with family and friends, dinner or a drink on evenings, walk and an ice-cream, exebitions and street concerts... here you can do all. It's definitely my favourite place in Ljubljana.

On a summer night, Ljubljana is on parade here, walking up one side of the river and down the other. The banks were redesigned by Joze Plecnik. Cafes line the banks with promenades. Small boats and ducks course on top of the river.

Yes, it is not about the river itself but about the fact that it crosses troughout the most attractive part of the city. Walk along it's both sides to admire the charming old houses or take the tourist boat to drive you along. The best thing is to do both.
The river is also called the river of the seven names because it goes underground a number of times and springs again under a different name.
