Roman Walls, Ljubljana

Ljubljana was founded by the Romans as Emona, a trading point on the way from the heart of the Roman empire to the east. 15 AD is said to be the year of founding. The Romans quickly constrcuted defense structure for the new city. Once, these walls surrouned the whole city and were sometimes up to 8 meters high. The last remains of these walls can be seen along Mirje ulica in the south of the city center.

In the 1950s, Joze Plecnik, an architect who had big influence on Ljubljanas architecture, added an archway topped with a pyramid to the wall.

Ljubljana began as the Roman town of Emona and was surrounded by 6 to 8 metre high and 2.5 metre wide city walls. Every 60 meters or so was a watch tower. There were 26 towers in all.
The town was destroyed in the the 6th century, but some parts of the wall was rebuilt and a few of those places can still be seen today. One place is most of the length of Mirje Street, just south of the city centre.
Today the wall is a favorite practice spot for rock climbers.

The former Roman town of Emona, which the modern city of Ljubljana is built upon, had a Roman wall of which a part of can be seen today. It was built in AD15 and measured 2.4m wide and between 6-8m high. Included in the wall were at least 26 towers and four main entrances. The best preserved section can be found on Mirje which lies just south of the city centre. This section was renovated in the 1930's by the architect Jože Pleènik.

Jože Plecnik was very fond of his cones and pyramids and when he renovated the section of thr Roman wall along Mirje in the 1930s he decided to put a stone pyramid on top of the middle section. Why, I don't really know!

This walls and a pyramid dated back to ancient Roman's times. Roman walls the preserved part of the town walls of the ancient Emona, was uniquely renovated by architect Joze Plecnik. They are located at Mirje district.
