Created in 1810, and one of the biggest universities in Europe, with more than 60000 students, this organization is spread all over the city, with many of its buildings in Krizanke. The main building, in Kongressni trg, is also the most beautiful, built in 1902 in location of the Austrian Provincial Palace.

On the south side of Kongresni trg you can see the nice palace of the university. This building has got a Renaissance facade and it was built by the Austrian architect J.Hudec as headquarter of the Duchy. From 1919 it is the home of the University.

The main university building dates from 1902. It was built in Renaissance style whit some neo-Gothic details. The building also has a big inner courtyard. The small green area is in front of the entrance with statue of Europe gives the wellcoming feel to it.

The University of Ljubljana is located at the southern end of Kongresni trg (Congress Square). It was built on the site of the former Provincial Mansion, which was until 1791 used as the office and residential building for deputies of provincial governors. In 1821, the Provincial Mansion hosted the famous Congress of the Holy Alliance, which brought together several European monarchs (the Austrian Emperor, the Russian Tsar and the King of Naples) and is considered to have ended the Napoleonic Wars. The Provincial Mansion was destroyed by the earthquake of 1895. The present building was built in 1902 and since 1919 has been used as the seat of the University of Ljubljana for over 50,000 students and 41 institutes.

University building as seen from Kongresni Trg

The building of the University of Ljubljana, located at the southern part of Kongresni Trg, was erected in 1902. It was built as a ducal palace, but in 1919, the university (which was founded in 1801) moved in. The university has over 50 000 students, making it the largest in Slovenia and giving students a high perecentage among the inhabitants of Ljubljana.

The facade of the building shows a mix of styles with neo-renaissance dominating.

To find out more about the university itself, check out the webpage below.

    University building

There lots of beautiful buildings in Ljubljana like the main building of the university which was build around 1900. The University of Ljubljana is a quite big one with more than 50000 students. There are only two other universities in Slovenia, one in Maribor and one at the coast.
The university building is situated at the south end of the Kongresni trg (Congress Square) where you find some more interesting buildings and a small park.

    University...

The university was first established in 1919 and for around 50 years, remained the only Slovenian university.
Some 20 years ago, the University of Maribor was establish and then recently the University of Primorska.
With Ljubljana being a fairly large central European city, nearly one tenth of its inhabitants are students. Newer buildings have been added around the campus.
