Vodnik Square lies to the east of St Nicholas Cathedral and features another market, (or is it an extension of the Central Market), full of fruit and veg stalls. The quality and quantity of the local produce looks very impressive. There are also a few clothes stalls towards the eastern side of the square near the Dragon Bridge.

    GUIDE FROM JLUBLJANA

What is she up to, Darja???

This looks like: come on, come on, follow your guide, don't talk about the heat....
you should have taken a sun-hat like I did......

And there she goes, keeping her lovely hat that danced on head hat and didn't want to stay in place....

What does she have in mind with that still empty stand near the wall????

But we follow her with pleasure, she knows Ljubljana!

She leads us to VODNIKOV TRG, VODNIK SQUARE.

This square was created after the earthquake of 1895 when the girls' grammar school and the school library were demolished and pulled down to make place for the market.
It was named after the MONUMENT TO VALENTIN VODNIK, the Slovene POET.

The monument was the work of sculptor Alojz Gangl.

Opposite the monument, a footpath leads to the CASTLE HILL.
Along the river Ljubljanica, from Vodnik Square to the Triple Bridge stands architect PLACNIK'S famous Market, a long monumental building with colonnades.

And we follow our guide.........feeling more and more at home in Ljubljana!

    Vodnik Square & Monument

Vodnik Square was built after the diocesan college and library situated in an old monastery were pulled down following the devastating earthquake of 1895. The space gained was used for the purposes of an open-air market which today features plenty of fruit and veg stalls. The square was named after Valentin Vodnik, whose monument by Alojzij Gangl was in 1889, when the college was still there, erected in front of the college.
