by olja1234 Visiting old city core is "a must". I love to stroll narrow streets, admiring centuries old houses, monuments, churches and other sights. The old town of Maribor is spreading alongside the bank of Drava river. there are still kept the remains of the walls that protected the town in the Middle Ages. Leave a Comment

by olja1234 Passing over Drava's bridge, you'll notice a 386 metre high hill, with the chapel on the top. This hill named Piramida is reachable very easy. It will take you mostly half an hour to reach the top, and a wonderful view over the city will open up in front od you. Leave a Comment Directions: This vine growing hill is located almost in the city, and because of its natural state, provides living space for many kinds of animals.

Alojzijeva cerkev by croisbeauty Originaly the church belonged to the Jesuits and after abolition of the Jesuit order it was closed in 1784 and turned into military storehouse. At this time it also lost its bell tower, while the Jesuit college was turned into a military school. The church was built in 1769 in late Baroque style. Castle by vesna04 City Castle is one of the most recognizable sighns of Maribor. I was built in 1478 by Emperor Fridrich III. Above the Castle entrance stands the coat of arms of the noble families Brandis and Trauttmannsdorf. At the Castle complex corner stands the statue of Josip Jurcic, Famous slovenian novelist. View over Maribor by KristaB Skiing by night is fantastic, Pohorje offers 9 km of superbly illuminated slopes for night skiing (untill 22.00) - the longest in Europe. Many folks from Maribor enjoy skiing after long day of work, and on Friday and Saturday evening, it's Party Time there! Leave a Comment Address: Maribor - Pohorje

Pikapolonca by anaiis After you have seen the Kojac, just turn the oposite from the Castle, walk a few meters and choose your ice cream at Pikapolonca's place (ladybird, ladybug)! There are so many flavors and so many people waiting for you to decide so hurry! Arguably the best ice cream in Slovenia. After playing with Kojac as a child my parents and grand parents would take me for this refreshment to restore my energy. Sorry, no decent picture yet! You forgot to take the pictures, when you see the sign! The moment you see the sign, you have mouth full of saliva! The Main Square with The Plague Monument - winter by anaiis On the main square near Rotovz house there is a plague mark (see that high statue?). The worst plague in 1680 took many lives of people in Maribor (estimated: one third of population). The centerpiece of the Memorial is still a column with Virgin Mary, but the pedestal is surrounded by the saints invoked against the dreaded plague: St. Francis of Assisis, Bostjan, Jacob the Elder, Anton of Padova, Rok, and St. Francis Xavier. On the right side of this picture you see the wooden balcony. It was on this very balcony where Hitler ordered to "make this country German again". (Meaning - Slovenian culture ought to be erased.) If you take your steps further to right, you will enter pedestrian area of Maribor, which is very nice to walk around. And if you care for some sushi (very rare to find in Slovenia!) you can get some in Rotovz house on this very square. Leave a Comment Address: Glavni trgDirections: Coming from the south you just cross The Main Bridge (which is NOT the biggest bridge!) and you are there.
