We did not notice that the night before was the shift to Summer Time so we dropped in at 3 PM which was indeed 4 PM but even at this really unusual "lunchtime" we got a gorgeous meal in local style. We had only one course but that was already more than we usually can eat. And it was all really tasty, authentic regional style. And in the bread basket i found the best home made bread I had over years.

The fact that in such a small and rather remote place a Chinese restaurant can exist shows that Slovenia is already quite a prosperous country.
The Slovenian name of the restaurant simply means Chinese Host - the Slovenian word "Vrt" comes obviously from the German word "Wirt" ( = host). An interesting example of a word without vowels, consonants only. It seems that Slovenian often adopts words and names from other languages simply by killing most or even all vowels (a prominent example is the name of the city TRIESTE in Slovenian TRST...) but when listening to the spoken Sovenian you hear a perfectly normal balance of consonants and vowels. (the nice island KRK is Croatian!)

If you are in Ptuj, you should try Haloška gibanica, a traditional dessert, made of cheese. (If you are in Prekmurje (Murska Sobota), try Prekmurska gibanica, a dessert with the same name, but with totally different ingredients).

Ptuj is truly a wine town of antiquity, with over 8 centuries of proud winemaking history. Its mixture of a gentle continental climate and the rich terroirs of the Haloze and Slovenske gorice regions meant that the land was ideally suited to the vine.
The Romans hedonistic beliefs held that wine was indeed food of the gods and that a life without was no life at all, following the ancient traditions the people of Ptuj still carry this belief. Ptuj cellars have seen bottling's of the countries greatest vintages and still stores them in its myriad of ancient underground cellars. Wines from as old as 1917 can be found in cellars under the very roads of Ptuj, thus while people above go about their daily business, great wine is sleeping peacefully under their feet.
The cellar had humble beginnings as a Minorite Monastery in the 13th century, going on to become a famed producer and trader of high quality wine in the centuries that followed. Ptujska klet is truly a piece of living history, still producing some of the finest wines in Slovenija.

This restaurant is situated on the bank of the river Drava. It is only minutes walk away from the town centre. If you are close to Ptuj's spa make your way to the restaurant by foot as it is only a 20 minute walk through peaceful surroundings.
In summer months sit on their terrace, where you will see the sunset while enjoying your seafood and excelent wine.

Potica is traditional dessert not only in Ptuj, but all over Slovenia. Its name derives from the fact that the dough and the filling are rolled together in equal proportions. Its filling is made mostly out of wallnuts (and raisins and cheese can be added to).
Sweet sweet sweet :)

You can have a tour around the cellar, taste the wine, see a multivison show titled "When the drop sparkles", which serves as a guide through past and present of winegrowing in Ptuj area, and buy wines in wine shop.

The PP restaurant is situated in the centre of town. You can't miss it as it has a large summer terrace, where they serve Illy coffee. In a pleasant atmosphere customers can find something to eat from a wide selection of dishes (also vegetarian).

If you are here, you should taste our sweet dessert "krof". We traditionally eat it in february (that is in carnival time) and in this time of year you can find it everywhere. In other months krof is not so popular, but you can still buy it in bakeries and other supermarkets.
