The highlight of Bled is, of course, Lake Bled and a good way to see the Lake and all of it's beauty is to take a walk around the lake. We started off near the Hotel Toplice and headed counterclockwise but you can go either direction, there's a very nice walking path that circles the entire lake which is relatively flat. Our guide book said it would take 2 or 2 1/2 hours, I think we did it in roughly 1 3/4 hours with multiple stops for photographs and to lend assistance to some young men that had lost their football to an angry hissing mama swan.
I only got one photo where the water appeared as it did to the eye, this marvelous blue green almost emerald color that makes the lake even more magical.

I think you'd be hard pressed to find a church set in a nicer place. The church basically encompasses the entire island and is still used for services and weddings for the people of Bled. Inside the small chapel you'll find a rope that is constantly being tugged by somebody as this rings the large church bell high in the rafters. After rowing out to the church we had about 20-30 minutes to look around which was more than enough as this island and church are deceptively small.

There is virtually two ways to get to the island in lake bled. You can either get into a larger rowboat with about 20-25 people and somebody will row you out to the island or you can do what I did which is to rent a rowboat for an hour and do it yourself. This was a great way to get out on the lake, get some exercise and do things at my own pace. From the water you get a good view of the castle as well. after the row, I was very thankful for the cafe on the island because i really needed a drink! The rowboat rental spot is just at the base of the castle directly on the water. I later found out that it is also possible to rent kayaks from a place on the other side of the lake. for those who are not used to rowing (like me) this option may prove to be a bit easier.

Lake Bled was formed by the recession of the Bohinj glacier at the end of the last ice age. It measures only 2km by 1380m and can be walked around via a 6km perimeter path which, if you have time, takes about 2 hours. The lake is home to Slovenia's only island - Bled Island which has been the site of a Christian church since the 9th century. The lake is very still with hardly a ripple running on it and the water is very clear so you can see fish swimming around near the shore.

A walk around Lake Bled will take you around 4 - 6 hours, depending on your speed and on how much time do you spend on sights like the Parish Church of St. Martin or the castle. I started in the town and walked counter-clockwise around the lake - luckyly, I had one of the warmest spring days of 2006!
You can finish your Bled walk with a short trip to the island or do it in between. All arounf the lake, you will find boat rentals where you can rent an own rowboat or join a group to be rowed to the island. Be aware that in the off-season, you will have difficulties to find both on weekdays!

On the lake your view and feel of the landscape is very different from that gained on land. The water has a calming sense and caused you to relax and enjoy the enviroment. One of the first things we noticed was the reflections on the lake showing the contour of the hills, the trees and any homes that are located close to the lake. The image is very clear in the calm waters only disturbed by ripples from our row boat. The calmness of the waters has made Lake Bled a favoured venue for international rowing carnivals.

On arrival at the island we walked up the hill and came to the Church of The Assumption, we had seen it from Bled Castle and from the shore. The major building is the church with its famous bell tower and it has been here for centuries. Inside the church is beautifully decorated , but the most important thing is the bell and history says that when you ring it you should make a wish.

Our group took a trip to Bled Island on one of the row boats, pletna is the local term, and a lone boatman rows the boat. He was lucky as it was a cool day and there was a full boatload of 12 persons, the expression on his face showed it was hard work. For the passengers is was a pleasant trip lasting approximately 20 minutes and enabled us to take photos from the centre of the lake, to look back and enjoy the landscape. Afer an hour on the island our boatman rowed us back to Bled.
