    Gondolas
    by Marie-France
You see them carrying tourists between the shore and the quaint little island.

Then, when you finally find their departure point, they're empty and they tell you that you have to wait until more people show up (I was there in late May). Then they tell you that it cost 1800 SIT for the return trip! That's over 8 Euros, the price of a good meal with wine or beer in Bled!

I decided it wasn't worth the price and the wait. There isn't anything to see on that island but the little church with the "wishing" bell and adjoining buildings.

But thoses gondolas sure make nice photos. :-)

Take a lot of photos, because you probably won't do it twice.

During the summer season you can rent a row boat, much cheaper if there are at least two of you.

It is very popular to get a boat trip to the island with the church in one of the traditional boats but take care that you dont pay too much money. The boat owners are used to rich tourists.
Check a few options before you choose a boat.

Ask a few places to find the lowest price

An other option is to rent a rowing boat and row yourself.

Though Savica Falls are very pretty, gushing some 60 meters down into a narrow gorge. They not only charge 300 SIT (okay, okay, it's only $1.25), they neglect to tell you until you've hiked about 2 hours! Yeah, well in Slovenia, that's about as much of a tourist trap as you will find. Read: it's worth the money.

Pletna is pretty safe transporting boat for approximately 20 persons. When stepin in, you have to follow the advice given by the rower because the balance of the boat is of crucial importance. He knows the best how to assign places for all passengers.

The alternative is to rent the small scull-boat for maximum four pesrons, however, if you're not fit, it might be very painful.

  • called a medieval town(the oldest bldg is 1529), we wre bussed the 38 km from Bled and walked thru the town (St. Jacob Ch. and the castle were closed). Attempts to enliven our PM were made by aficionados of medieval costume and dance without benefit of a decent translation. A later trip to the Nace house was after dark and almost unlit. Dinner at Taverna Kasca was bland,

If you are into hiking-biking or other totally physical outdoor activities this would be a charming base of operations. If there were a Michelin Guide, S.L. would reate a zero star line in a Carnolia paragraph. With so many troly medieval and old towns and outdoor rural village museums all over Europe, S.L. should content itself as a haven for the outdoor set. This is not for (experienced) senior sightseers. If caught in our tour group situation smile politely (ask for your optional extra money back?) and ENJOY.

Go to Radovlika on your oown and enjoy the Bee Museum and the unspoiled town that is not hungering for tourists.

  • Beware that if Slovenia has a major tourist destination, this is it right here - which shouldn't be a reason to cancel your visit, but beware. Might need to make hostel reservations in advance in height of the season.

  • If you go to the lake, you MUST take a swim in it, so if you're not young enough to throw yourself in there naked or with your underwear, be sure to take a swimming suit!!!

YOU WON'T WANT TO MISS THE OPPORTUNITY, the water is great!!!!

  • We didn't go by car, but to let you know, there is a parking fee at some of the parking areas of the place.

In Cesta svobode, it's limited to 2 hours and prices are 1hour: 1 euro; 2 hours: 2,5 euros.

On Veslaska promenada one hour parking costs 1,5 euros and every further hour 0,5. 1 hour parking at other parking places cost 1 euro and every further hour 0,5.

Parking in Velika Zaka costs 6 euros per day and 3 after 2p.m..

One hour parking in Mala Zaka costs 1 euro, and the whole day 2,5 euros.

Long-stay guests can pruchase parking permits for 20 euros which will be valid for the duration of their stay. These are available at the tourist Association Office in Bled, Cesta svobode 10.

    Medieval Night at Bled Castle

  • We went to a medieval night at bled castle, which was described to us as being full of legend/ history stories, dancing sword fighting and games all provided by people dressed as the court of bled castle. Unfortuantely, there was not any history of slovenia or lake bled given, just a long drawn out single legend. There was a bit of sword fighting and games, but there was definitely dancing, tons of dancing...and although this might sound really picky I have to say it! The music to which they danced was not even close to medieval or slovenian. Overall the way its advertised makes it sound like a really good, entertaining and somewhat informative night, sadly i found it to be lacking all three. If we had known what it was really like theres no way we would have spent £20 each to go.

i would just simply suggest to not expect to get what is advertised for the medieval night then you wont be as disappointed.

I personally would have rather of just relaxed at the lakeside or at a bar or in our apartment. Actually it would be a good idea to go have a meal at the castles restaurant as the sunsets. Thats stunning :)
