  • Lake Bled

    5 out of 5 stars

You can hire a boat called a pletna to go out to Bled island. We did not; we just viewed it from the shore. Like the castle, the island looks very different when viewed from different sides. When you are right in front of it you can see the stairway leading up to the Church of the Assumption. The stairway dates from 1655.The lovely church dates...

This stunning castle stands perched on a rock towering over Lake Bled. The castle looks different from different angles as you walk around the lake and in different weather conditions. On our one day visit we had brilliant sunshine, rolling clouds, heavy rain and actually the changes these brought to all the scenery was worth experiencing in...

  • Gostilna Pri Planincu

    4 out of 5 stars

I wanted something that was typical Slovenian. The wait staff recommended this spicy beef/lamb patty with soft cheese, a salad, and a beer. It hit the spot. Make sure that you bring an expired license plate to hang on their ceiling.

  • Slaščičarna Šmon

    4.5 out of 5 stars

Given the tasty food and generous portions in Slovenia, you might find yourself hard-pressed to leave room for dessert. But if you can manage, it's definitely worth it to make your way to this mecca of sweet treats, where you can get all sorts of pastries, tortes, and ice cream. Among the featured items is the local temptation known as Kremna...

Bled isn't exactly a hotspot for nightlife, but it does have one place where you can waste your money into the early hours of the morning, and that is the Casino. Tucked away, down by the lake, the Casino stays open for punters from three o'clock in the afternoon until five o'clock in the morning. The link below takes you to the official site for...

Of course, Fernanda needed desperately something that I think she didn't buy, but justified a visit to the shopping mall. Don't ask me about the shops (that's up to her), but I didn't bother too much, with the splendid views from its open space.

  • PLETNA

There is a lot of history connecting to this boat. In the time of empress Maria Theresa 20 families were given the rights to transport the people to the island so at that time the only way to reach the island was with them. This "Pletna business" goes on from generation to generation ever since.

Bled Warnings and Dangers

  • Parking

Before leaving I read something about Bled (in VT, of course) and was prepared to pay a lot for parking. Well, the situation is worse than expecting, and parking by the lake is not expensive - is almost impossible.I met a place (seeming a private parking) by the lake, announcing a price of 4.50€ for parking. I risked, but couldn't find any place to...

We parked the car, and were about to walk away to take a photo, when a man...

Bled Tourist Traps

  • Parking Ticket Danger!

The city fathers of Bled have found that they can make a pile of money by giving parking tickets to people who stop along the lake and leave their cars. I have seen many cars with tickets on the windshield. Don't let this happen to you. If you must park go down to the end of the lake at the camping area, and try to find a place. Let's face it,...

The best way to enjoy the lake (if you're in good condition, what was not exactly my case) is to walk along the lake. There's a good path that, I think, goes completely around the lake. We used it for a few hundred meters, and enjoyed the many points with excellent views.

The Pletna is a sort of gondola, steered and motored by a muscular chappie with 2 oars. The general programme is that you pay the ferry man for the half-hour or so...
