    Tick-Borne Encephalitis

    by zadunajska8 Written Nov 3, 2011

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

There is a small risk of tick-bone encephalitis in heavily forested areas of Slovenia and this does include some of the forest around Lake Bohinj (such as around the Savica waterfall). The area immediately around the lake is free from risk.

Lets not overstate the risk - it is very low - but it's not unheard of in these parts. It's probably not worth (and isn't advised) to have vaccinations against this to visit these parts of Slovenia but if you are going to walk up to the Savica Waterfall (and you should!) then perhaps wear a very light cotton long sleaved shirt so that your arms are protected and when you get back to your hotel then check yourself carefully for ticks. Common places to find them are the hair line, behind the ears, elbows, backs of knees, the groin and armpits. If you find a tick on your body, you should remove it as quickly as possible with a pair of tweezers and then wash the area and your hands thoroughly with soap and water.

    Parking Rip Off

by painterdave Written Aug 27, 2009

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Bohinj town council has made it impossible to park along the lake. You absolutely have to park in their lot at one euro and hour, even to visit the tourist information office will cost you parking, to visit the market will cost you the same. There are places to park along the lake, and you will see people parked there. DO NOT PARK THERE!!! There is a teenager who goes along and writes 40 Euro tickets to anyone who is stupid enough to actually think that a parking place is what it looks like along the lake.
Lake Bled is no less a place for free parking, they also have their hand in your wallet.
If you do happen to get a parking ticket, go to the tourist office, pay a euro for parking, and go inside, they will reduce the ticket by 50% if you pay within a few days.
I have included photos of the parking, and you will see in any direction there is no sign to tell you NOT to park there. These town officials are very sneaky in luring you into thinking that you got lucky and found a spot to picnic.
Also beware of parking at the waterfall, another 3 euros, and they do not tell you that after you hike up a ways you will pay another 2 1/2 euros to walk the trail for 20 minutes to the waterfall. This area is a National Park of Slovenia--nothing in life is free.

    cows in Stara Fuzina..

by hrothgarorange Written Apr 11, 2008

If you venture over to the adorable hamlet of Stara Fuzina - be warned. When I was there, I witnessed a man herded a group of bulls in the open street. The second they saw me, they began to charge, and would have crushed me sooner than look at me. Luckily, I was on my bike, so I took this picture to prove it and then sped off =)

    Access to slap Savica closed!

by Marjans Written Aug 17, 2003

After the fire in Komarca and above the Savica fall, the way over Komarca to Crno jezero and to waterfall is temporary closed. Check, whether it is already cleared, but after the first info, it seems to be closed until spring next year!

Order only one portion of cheese Mohant

by Marjans Written Jul 28, 2003

After the visit of Museum of alpine dairy farming in Stara Fuzina, you have a chance to taste some local specialities. But, when you order a cheese named Mohant, you can expect, that you will only pay for it, but not taste at all, cause it stinks and has an awful taste, that only real "specialists for special cheese" like.

Don't put your tent too close to Bohinj lake

by Marjans Updated Jul 28, 2003

Bohinj is known as one of the places in Slovenia with very high degree of precipitation. So take care while choosing the right place for the tent, because, after the rainy night, you can be visited by a duck family...

Take care of your camera ....

There is a good path which brings you close to the waterfall, BUT:

When taking photographs it can be dangerous when getting to close to the waterfall because the fine water drops can cause damages on your camera. Better take a tele lens with you and try to take the pictures from a farer (and camera-safer) distance.

Further the path is very wet, so take care and prepare good shoes or better don't go to close, you can also get wet ....
