Fortress Kluze
  • Tip Rating:
  • It is located four kilometres from Bovec in the direction of the Predel pass. In the second half of the 15th century a wooden fortification was built above the deep ravine of the Koritnica river. Its purpose was to prevent pillaging raids by the Turks to Carinthia. Georg Phillipp von Gera, the Bovec ruler from 1613 to 1643, built a stone fortress in 1613. The upper fortification was demolished during an artilery barrage in World War I while the Italian battery could do no damage to the fortress by the road. As the road was being widened and the bridge reconstructed during the administration by the Alies, the defence rampart with the entrance portal, which was obstructing the road, was removed.

If you see some people getting ready for a rafting trip, take the time to stop and watch them get dressed in those funny "wet" suits. It is halarious seeing people trying to slip into something that fits like a glove over your whole body. This is Tal and I after we managed to get into these suits designed by the Maquis de Sade.

    Fortress in Predel
  • Tip Rating:
  • About one kilometre before the border crossing of Predel the ruins of an Austrian fortress are still visible. At the beginning of 19th century here stood a wooden fortification. On May 15th, 1809 bitter fighting took place between Napoleon troops and Austrian defenders. The Austrian contingent of defenders was made up of the border guards of Slunj, commanded by captain Johann Hermann von Hermannsdorf. The defenders, despite of being outnumbered, valiantly repelled all the attacks and did not respond to the call for surrender. On May 18th, the assailants succeeded in setting fire to the fortress and in the breakthrough perished the majority of the contingent including its commander. Emperor Ferdinand I. had a magnificent monument erected in memory of the brave defenders. It was uncovered in 1851. The monument is about 6 metres high supporting stone wall, on which leans a masoned pyramid with an engraved inscription. Cast-iron sculpture of a wounded lion and neatly fenced area further emphasize the grandeur of the monument. The fortress was renovated in 1848 and its ruins can be seen on both sides of the highway.

    The church of St. Urh
  • Tip Rating:
  • The church of St. Urh, with its dominant position on the high flat to which leads a monumental staircase, endows Bovec with a more picturesque appearance. The main façade is in the neo-Roman style, and in the nave of the church we find the remains of old Gothic architecture, whose remains are visible in the Gothic portals and in the Gothic triumphal arch in the eastern wall of the nave. In the interior of the presbytery stands an imposing altar fashioned from the local reddish rock. The windows with multicoloured stain glass images (vitrages) give the rich and agitated interior an additional charm while the external appearance is provided by the mighty belfry.

  • This altar is the only part of the inside I could photograph, since the church is full of planking.

VISIT THE JULIANA ALPINE BOTANICAL GARDEN
  • Tip Rating:
  • Though it was early in the spring, we went to visit the Juliana Alpine Botanical Gardens in the Trenta Valley which is near to Bovec. This garden is situated near the majestic and fabulous mount Tiglav and along the river Soca. The garden is not very large but it is a very special place, that I immeadiately felt strongly. The many different flowers and plants were only coming up after the winter. I still think that is was well worth the visit.
The founder of this garden was called Albert Bois de Chesne, he was born in 1871 of a Huguenot family in Trieste. His local teacher at school helped him to become enthousiastic about botany and the rest is history. Albert build his garden near the Soca river, at an altitude of 800m on te slope of Mt Kukla. The work began in 1926, a long time ago which means that the garden is now well matured. The majority of the plants in the Garden were brought form the easten and western julian Alps, the Friuli hills, The Karst meadow, and the prealpine world.... anyway I do hope you visit and enjoy this wonderful peaceful Garden.

    Ride up - walk down.
  • Tip Rating:
  • The kanin cable car from the edge of town is modern and quick.

The views are, as you would expect, impressive. There are plenty of walks to do up here but just walking back to town is very pleasent in itself. It's easy to follow the route as you basically just keep the cable car in view.

Beware of bears in the woods! (I'm not kidding).

Behind the church of St. Joseph and the civilian cemetery stands the cemetery of Austrian soldiers who fell on the Soèa front. Concrete crosses are aligned along the enclosure and above the cemetery lies a large cross composed of rocks. Above it, on a large rock, an artillery shell was placed, representing a simple memorial to the fallen soldiers.

    St. Lenart`s church
  • Tip Rating:
  • On the left side above the Bovec - Kluze road, at Ravne, the ruins of the Gothic church of St. Leonart can be seen. It was built in the 15th century and it is oriented with its altar section to the east. The exterior walls of the church displaying the ribbed parts of the ceiling and the characteristic portal with pointed vault have been preserved.
