crossing Mura river by 'brod'

by picek

Only several 'brods' on Mura still serve their function - that's to act like a ferry for the passenger from one bank of Mura river to another: from Prlekija to Prekmurje, or vice versa. In past there were no bridges so brods were plenty, especially where river is little wider and more shallow, where it was most sensible to make crossing. After WWII when bridges were reconstructed or newly built, the traffic in this ancient manner slowed down or died out entierly. It's now more like a tourist attraction than regular service, though occasionally they will carry from one bank to another for a little tip if you come by car, or for free if you're on foot. One such brod is in Spodnje Krapje, through thick flooded forest where you can see and heap plentiful birds and wild animals. You can go here following signs for gostilna 'trnek', then go on by cycling or on foot, passing dead canals of Mura....

Side trip to Mala Nedelja

One of the trips from Ljutomer can be done by bike or car to Mala Nedelja, a small village in the hills of Slovenske gorice, less than 10 kilometers away: in historical center of the village, maybe its highest point, the church dominates above plains and nearby hills. Built and rebuilt throughout different historical periods, they mentioned it first in 15th centry and has predominant Gothic features. The area had suffered religious wars and Turkish invasions, as well as serious epidemies of plague. When they rebuilt formerly modest looking swimming pool grounds with thermal water into modern wellness centre in the village below, the area became widely known. And its not only medicinal waters that makes it worth visit; here are numbers of good sort of vines growing and sold, and cycling is very good here with traffic not too dense and except for major inclines, most of roads are not too...

This region's history is stronlgy related with vineyards and drinking vine is part of the culture here. When Jeruzalem is the most famous and most picturesque landscape, there are also less known and equally interesting places in the surrounding hills with vine roads and many cellars. This picture was taken from my aunts yard in Lahonci, small village between Ljutomer and Ormoz. From these hills you can glance at Jeruzalem and Svetinje on one side, Pohorje at the other side, Boè and Ivanjšica at another.
