take a walk to lucja to see the marina

    marina at lucja

Lucja is a suburb of Portoroz and it's quite pleasant... to walk there, along the sea-shore, it takes about 20-25 minutes. Half way between the two places there's a large marina with some fancy boats (yuck) and a nice canal lined with restaurants and cafés. It's surely a valid altrernative to lying on the beach which, for the reconrd, looked quite small and dirty-ish

reflections of the lucja's church in the canal

While Portoroz is a congregation of hotels, casinos and tourist traps... Lucja, in its suburbs, it's the place where people live. There are some hotels, but not of the posh kinds of Portoroz, and - what's more - there are people leading normal lives there. it'ss nice to go for a walk and take in the few sights - in my case it was the reflection of the little church in the canal

If you are a fisher or you simply like fish you might go to a fishpicnick with a boat taken from the port of Portoroz. You pay at Maonas tourist agency around 25-30 euros. You go with the boat from Portoroz to Izola and on the way back to Portoroz you have the posibility to take a walk in Piran too and than back to Portoroz after aprox.7 hours. On the boat you eat the best fresh shells ever and fish,of corse and other seafood with salade. It is a very nice experience to see almost all Slovenian seaside from the boat. There are wondeful amazing landscapes.A,and not at last the boat will stop and let you swim some minuts in the clear blue wather at aprox.56m deep:)So,it is up to you if you want to have fun by going at a fishpicnick.I can only say that you won`t regret it!!!Have fun!Everything is checked by the biggest Slovenian fan,so you might trus this!;)

The view on the Portorose beach

Slovenian coast is small but you`ve got many things to do & see. Sports, luxury staying, eating and exploring are must be while visiting the coast. In summer time this place becomes very crowded and lots of tourist enjoy its natural beauties. For those who are very adventure I am sure other places would be far more interesting. This is again one of the most develop places here in Slovenian coast.

    Palace Hotel

    Portoroz - Slovenia

The most outstanding building in Portoroz is... a hotel. So interesting, that I had to read about it. It is now a modern hotel built recently (opened in 2008) but that, for historic reasons kept the former facade (and that's its visual power). The original was built in 1910 to serve the high dignitaries of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. From 1983 to 1990 it was used as a cultural centre.

Don't ask me about the hotel's conditions, but if you have 200 € available you may check for yourself (low-season and room in the back)

    Sailing anybody ?

Most of the development along the main road Obala Beach Road dates from the late 1960's but Portoroz was first mentioned in the 13th century.
Portoroz was the bay where there used to be the sailing competetions venue of galleons !
The Maona travel agency rents out boats where they can be hired on the west of Metropol Hotel area.
KOMPAS travel agency also can book a day trip to Venice aboard the prince Of Venice, a 40 m Australian-made catamaran.

    Beach

by solopes Updated Dec 30, 2013
    Portoroz - Slovenia

Portoroz was mentioned as the best Slovenian beach, and I was expecting something better. Of course it is developed, with hotels and restaurants everywhere, but the beach is poor. As a matter of fact, beaches are artificial and private areas by the sea, here and there with small vestiges of sand.

I had a swim in one of those small pieces of sand (public area) with too many algae and a brownish water.

    Well... I've seen better!

If the main beach didn't convince me at all, the sights of the coast were very beautiful. The landscape is nice, and the steep coast allows many viewpoints of great beauty.

Travelling by car in the coast is a very positive experience if you forget parking difficulties.

view of piran from the boat

You can easily take a tour/ride on one of the two boats offered. different trips will take you to different places naturally. some go "across the border" where you will need a passport (even in the ocean!) and others you won't need a passport.
the boat trip offers a great view of the slovenian, italian, croatian coast lines, and even some good shopping.
