Škofja Loka/Puštal - Puštal castle

by Willettsworld

Puštal’s Castle is a rather rustic looking building just over the river from Skofja Loka.It was built in the year 1220 and was inhabited by the family of Puštal’s lordship, the Burgstal’s. In the beginning of the 17th century the property of the castle was passed over to the Oblak family from Gorenja vas, who made their fortune from iron trading. In 1688, Emperor Leopold granted to Mark Oblak, at that time the town judge of Škofja Loka, the nobility title with the attribution "von Wolkensberg”. His grandson Francis became a baron in 1753.Today the castle looks like it’s slowly being renovated even though its chapel, built by the Oblak’s, looks a little rundown from the outside and was closed when I visited.Directions: From southern end of Mestni trg, take the main road left and follow over the river. Castle is on the right by a bend.

Škofja Loka/Puštal

by Willettsworld

Puštal is a small suburb that lies just south of Škofja Loka and can be reached by leaving the southern end of Mestni trg and walking down a road called Kopaliska Ulica. From here you can cross a wooden footbridge that is known as Devils footbridge. The views of the river are very picturesque as you can see a weir and houses near the river. Further on is Nace's House which has an 18th century baroque wooden upper storey on top of a 16th century stone lower storey. Puštal also has its own castle which was originally built in 1220 but today is looking a bit rustic. The whole village is very peaceful and quiet and makes for a nice small walk around. I've included a small map of how to get to Nace's House which is the village's main attraction.

Zasip – St Catherine’s Church

by Willettsworld

I decided to walk back to Bled from Vintgar Gorge which is quite a trek up and over Hom, a hill which stands at 834m above sea level. On top of the hill stands this beautiful little pilgrimage church dedicated to St Catherine. It was built around the year 1400, whilst its masonry portico and frescoes date from the beginning of the 16th century. The main feature of the church is its fortified wall that dates from the 15th century and encircles the entire church. It is possible to go right up to the church but I couldn't enter inside as it was locked.

Savice waterfall (Slap Savice)

by mikelisaanna

The Savice falls (Slap Savica in Slovene) are located about 7km west of Lake Bohinj in Triglav National Park. They are over 80 meters high and are near the headwaters of the Sava river, which eventually flows through Zagreb and Belgrade before emptying into the Danube. You reach the viewpoint for the falls by hiking about 20 minutes up a path with about 500 stair steps. The hike is worth it.

Claustra Alpium Iuliarum

by Enzyme_X

Claustra Alpium Iuliarum is a system of roman defensive walls, Julian Alps in Slovenia to Rijeka in Croatia (one small section is also at Rattendorf, Austria). The idea was to build a defens which would prevent barbarians to come all the way to Italy. Works started in 3rd century and were finished in 4th century. Along the wall lots of towers were placed and some smaller forts. The headquarters of the whole system was at Ad Pirum fort (present Hrusica). Interesting that Claustra never sered it's original purpouse. No barbarian ever came this far. But it did play an impotrant role in internal roman affairs.More At My Hrusica page

Repnice

by Enzyme_X

Repnica is a artificial cave dug into the ground, a thick layer of flint-sand, remains of Panonian sea. You can only find them in south-east Slovenia, around Bizeljsko (north of Brezice). Because of the constant humidity nad low temperatuer (8°C), in the past these caves were used to store produce. hence the name ''repnica'' (repa = turnip). Today this hand-made caves are used to store wine. Some of them accept visitours. We visited ''Repnica Najger'' which is the biggest and with it's natural frescoes also the preattiest . The owner, Jozica is great fun :-). She was telling joke after joke. Besides being a great host. The price of some local wine tastin is 500 tolars per person (with snack more). Bigger groups should book in advance.

Religion, Chocolate, Homebrew

by travelbug102

Those looking for something to check out in the neighborhood of Celje or Rogaska Slatina should pay a visit to the Olimje Monastery. Built in 1550, defuct in 1782 and back to a working monastery just 15 years ago, the monastery has one of the oldest pharmacies in Europe. Next to the monastery is a pretty good chocolateria where I met the only rude Slovenian on my travels. On the way there, stop off at the Gostisce Haler pub. They brew their own beer, a lager and a dark. Good stuff and dirt cheap take-away. Huge portions of food as well and some rooms if you want to spend the day eating chocolates and washing them down with some homebrew.

Castle with a View to Adriatic

by travelbug102

It's not listed in any of the Slovenia travel guide books, but the Socerb castle is worth a visit, mainly for the position it has on a limestone plateau. Located off the main highway running from Koper to Divaca and not more than 5-6 km from Trieste, this hilltop castle has a great view down on to Koper, Trieste and the Adriatic. The castle has a nicely decorated banquet hall that seats up to 20 people. There's also a cave and wine cellar underneath the castle.
