Prvomajski Square used to be the main square in Piran before they filled the harbour up and created Tartini square in the 1890's.
Today the square is a quiet little place with a nice wine bar, a small grocery store, a fish restaurant and a couple of shops.
It´s right in the middle of the old town and a quiet and nice little place to chill out while being surrounded by old houses.

The 1st May Square or Stari trg or Piazza Vecchia, as it was first named is the centre of the old Punta The main streets of Piran meet here. It used to be the administrative centre of the town till the 13th century.
Here stood the old municipal building, the St. Donat Church from the 14th century and the stone rainwater cistern, which was built after the severe draught in the year 1775. At the back of the cistern there are he statues of two babies, one holding a fish and the other a pot. The stairs leading onto square are decorated with two allegorical statues, of Law and Justice.

Some call it Prvomajski trg; others swear by Trg Maja. Still more wonder how you can pronounce trg without a vowel. That aside, this square houses a fine restaurant in the back corner (where the Italians love their exchange rate) and the ancient well in the center. It's just a nice relaxing spot that literally appears from nowhere. One moment, you're wandering through narrow alleyways, and the next, you're in the piazza. Bellissimo!

1st of May Square - a market in the old part of Piran with a big cistern in the middle in the past used as a reservoir for water. Sorry for the photo, it has been taken from the back side of the square and does not show how marvel it is. Unfortunately I have not another one.

The 1st of May Square is also known as the Old Square since this used to be the old hub of the town until the 13th century: there was the town's cistern. it's slightly elevated and on the stairs leading to it there are the allegorical statues of Law and Justice. Today it's still a hub since it's surrounded by many bars and restaurants. In the summer months the square becomes the stage of many musical, dance and theatre performances.

I have never seen a square like this, oval in shape, and surrounded by Venetian houses. The surroundings are so beautiful that it makes your flesh go goosepumps.

A: Piran is a scenic little town wih a lot of history. I would combine it with a stop at the Skocjan caves, which are one of the world's most impressive caves.
