The buildings and the legends

According to the legend (which i learned from our handy Lonely Planet guide) this beautiful Venetian House in the city's main Tartinijev Trg was built by a wealthy Venetian merchant for his lover from Piran. The gift generated gossip, so the merchant added a message to the facade. It translates as: "Let them talk."

The little balcony on the side is my favorite though :)

Piran is not so large, but just be sure not to forget to visit Tartinijev Trg (Tartini Place). It is the beating heart of the small town, a meeting place where you will find everything and it is still very well preserved in its original Venetian style.

A most beautiful red house (The Venice House) at the nord-east corner of Tartini
Square built in the middle of the 15th century is the oldest conserved house in
Tartini Square. Between two windows stands a lion on a quarry plate with an
inscription “Lassa pur dir” (Let them talk). An interesting legend is narrowed
why this inscription was made.
Long time ago when Piran was under Venice rule, the town experienced an
exceptional flourishing and prosperity. Very important traders from all over the
world came to Piran to trade. They were very powerful and rich. When they were
waiting for the deal, they were socialising with the people in Piran. One time a
very important trader felt in love with a local girl who were very poor. He was
coming often to Piran and he was bringing here precious present and later he
decided that he would build her a house with the balcony so she could wait him
on the balcony when he was arriving to the town. The other girls were very
jealous and they started to talk ugly think about the couple. However, when the
house was complete it was so beautiful that the gossips started to get uglier
and uglier. The couple for it owns defence made a plate with an inscription
“Lassa pur dir”.

venetian house and clock tower

I believe this is the known as the Venetian House, dating back to the 15th century. There are a lot of pretty houses here for such a relatively small town.

A: Piran is a scenic little town wih a lot of history. I would combine it with a stop at the Skocjan caves, which are one of the world's most impressive caves.
