trying to plan... ha! by alza The bus from Trieste to Piran stopped very near this restaurant I guess... cuz it's the first thing I saw. Large terrace under a pergola, rustic setting, most inviting. I went inside to check the menu and ask if they could do grilled steak and french fries, no problem, so that's where I ate. The young woman who served at the tables outside was really nice and helpful, a bit shy but with a genuine smile. She was embarrassed that the owner inside would not let me call the youth hostel from his phone, but she needn't have worried. I understand that they can't let everyone use their phone. I got a calling card when I could. And walked everywhere easily. Piran is a small place.
Steak and french fries were very good, cooked just like I wanted. Great beer too. The menu offered lots more, mostly grilled food, very simple and tasty. For everything we had, I'd say this place was cheaper than all the waterfront pizzerias we found later. So happy to be there that I'll call it a great experience. Now that I think about it, I especially enjoyed eating quietly under the trees, away from the waterfront and tourists. Everything was Slovenian there :-) Leave a Comment Theme: LocalComparison: about averageDirections: near the bus station

Frogs legs on the bottom right by KristaB This restaurant has a very old tradition, it is a family business that survived many decades by providing excellent food. Here you can smell the winds of Adriatic sea, cold breeze from the Alps, you'll hear Italian language and feel la dolce vita. Located by the old main road connecting Ljubljana and Koper, this place is still surviving although the super modern highway has affected their business. But still there are people who would drive a few extra kilometers to enjoy good food. Among most frequent visitors are bikers - the old road with gentle curves and lovely scenery is a perfect playground for their horse-powers.
The daily menu this time offered variety of food based on Asparagus - very popular local vegetable available during spring. I even ate the asparagus ice cream!!! Very good, mild, between salty ands sweet, served with white wine jelly. On the picture: Beef-stake with asparagus, the other one with Teran local red wine and parma ham, and fried frogs legs. Raw oysters and fish by KristaB After visiting Kobarid museum, we went looking for a good restaurant. It is very easy to find one, since there are 3 superb restaurants in Kobarid, but all full of Italian tourists. Well, they are sort of Food tourists, coming over the border for cheap yet fantastic food.
Raw fresh oysters, raw fish, mussels, grilled fish, pasta with truffles - everything was delicious. Leave a Comment Theme: LocalPrice: US$21-30 » Currency ConverterComparison: about averageAddress: Hotel Modri Val - Kobarid - Slovenija

Red Hot Chili Pepper by alza On my first night in Ljubljana, I was running out of money so wasn't sure what we'd get for dinner. We got a pension outside of town (everything was full in Old Ljubljana) and I finally decided the time had come to call home for some funds. So we took the bus back into town, checked the bank account, it was replenished! thanks Mom! and went to the nicest place we saw. Cantina Mexicana is in a lil courtyard near the main square, where the poet stands. The area was filled with people and there was a happy atmosphere. The Cantina was a great place in every way, service was professional and relaxed, food was delicious. I mostly remember the fine Slovenian wine we had, recommended by our expert waiter. The fact that we had cash to spend made us happy enough... but we were lucky to spend it in the best place we could have wishes for. :-) Leave a Comment Theme: OtherComparison: about averageAddress: on the cardDirections: Old Town

Town of Bled, Slovenia by karenincalifornia On the second day we were in Bled, we explored the town and wanted to pick out the perfect place for dinner that night. We came across a charming restaurant owned by two brother from what was then Czechoslavakia. Soft natural afternoon light was streaming through the windows, and a Beethoven sonata was playing on the stereo. What ambiance. We told the brothers we would be back that evening. We went back that night, but gone was the natural lighting and the Beethoven Sonata. Instead the restaurant was brightly lit and Kenny Rogers' "The Gambler" was blaring out over a loudspeaker system. We wondered what happened to the Beethoven sonata. The Czech brothers told us that people want to hear US country western music, not music by a German classic composer. They had to play the country western to get people in the door. Interesting what sells in each country... Leave a Comment

goot eating around the corner by travelbug102 The best place for travelers not bent on gourmet restaurants are local "gostilnas", traditional restaurants serving simple, hearty and inexpensive meals. Most of the one shave a bit more rustic feel to them than a modern eatery.
Menus vary but you can usually get a set lunch for around $4-5, maybe a tad more for those in a bigger city. Not a lot for vegetarians but then again Slovenia doesn't offer too much to vegetarians. Leave a Comment Theme: LocalPrice: less than US$10 » Currency ConverterComparison: less expensive than averageDirections: Gostilnas can be found anywhere in Slovenia. There's always in smaller towns and villages. The Svab in Hrastovlje and Pri Planicu in Bled are two of my favorites.

By the banks of the river. by blint Slovenian food in general is very hearty with incredibly LARGE portions for great prices. Try tavcarjev hram (Tavcarjev ul 4) or Spajza (Gornji trg 28) for traditional Slovene food!
Ploughmans lunch with Sauerkraut, sausages(Klobasa),Wiener Schnitzel (Dunajski Zrezek),black pudding, potatoes dumplings (Njoki)possibly more. Or the golaz (goulash soup). Infact, Slovania has lots of other fantastic soups too. Leave a Comment Theme: LocalComparison: about averageDirections: .

Gostilna Ribic by croisbeauty When travelling around Slovenia you'll see signs of "Gostilna", which means inn or trattoria. It is a kind of local restaurant where you can have excellent and inexpencive food. Besides, the atmosphere in gosltinas is very relaxed and unconvencial.
5cg When in the town of Ptuj, do not miss gostilna Ribic which is situated in the old core of the town, right on the bank of Drava river. Here you can have daily frish sea-fish of very good quality, vegan menu and, of course, excellent wines from the well known Ptuj region. Restoran Sokolu by croisbeauty The restaurant is situated in the heart of the city, right in between Mestni trg and the Cathedral and just a foot from Tromostovje. Since it is in an old building, you'll feel the medieval atmosphere when eating here, especially if in the underground room.
The traditional Slovene cuisine consists of huge portions of fresh meat with potatoes and vegetables. I had grilled calamari which were fresh and very good prepared. The Slovene wines are of excellent quality and I recommend you Zeleni silvanec. Leave a Comment
