Janko Sirc, Mesarstvo in vinotoc: Podgorci, NE Slovenia

by anaiis

The food here is delitious, but since this is not a restaurant, you cannot actually (legally) eat warm (cooked) meals here. Only if you know the owner, like I do, so its like inviting "friends". But it is possible (and legal) to buy Janko's products (wine, meat, paste etc.) and to have a meal with those products included (cold cuts). I highly recommend it. Among other products you will find here: fresh meat (pork, beef, veal, fowl), salami, frankfurter, kranjska klobasa, minced lard. Do not hesitate to visit a wine cellar since there are very special barrels to see. Avoid arriving Mondays since the place is closed. paste, sweet wine. The culture of meat is very strong in Slovenia. If you want to discover fully what it means, you have to pay Janko a visit. Of course, the price will depend from how much wine and butchery products you take home.

Pri Sv Florianu: The place to check out in Ljubljana

by AndreSTGT

Situated in a beautiful and quiet part of the Old Town, this restaurant is a rather chic and pricy affair, but definitely worth a splurge. The special thing about it is that there are two menus, one with traditional Slovenian dishes and one with Moroccan specialities which gives you the opportunity to sample different flavors. The quality of the food is good and the service is impeccable. Tris predjedi (mixed Moroccan starters) : 6,50€Piscancja prsa s pes (tender chicken breast with mediterranean vegetables) : 11€

Ribic: Gostilna

by croisbeauty

When travelling around Slovenia you'll see signs of "Gostilna", which means inn or trattoria. It is a kind of local restaurant where you can have excellent and inexpencive food. Besides, the atmosphere in gosltinas is very relaxed and unconvencial. 5cgWhen in the town of Ptuj, do not miss gostilna Ribic which is situated in the old core of the town, right on the bank of Drava river. Here you can have daily frish sea-fish of very good quality, vegan menu and, of course, excellent wines from the well known Ptuj region.

Sokolu: Traditional Slovene cuisine

by croisbeauty

The restaurant is situated in the heart of the city, right in between Mestni trg and the Cathedral and just a foot from Tromostovje. Since it is in an old building, you'll feel the medieval atmosphere when eating here, especially if in the underground room. The traditional Slovene cuisine consists of huge portions of fresh meat with potatoes and vegetables. I had grilled calamari which were fresh and very good prepared. The Slovene wines are of excellent quality and I recommend you Zeleni silvanec.

Stari Grad - Old castle: All The Best Influences

by KristaB

This restaurant has a very old tradition, it is a family business that survived many decades by providing excellent food. Here you can smell the winds of Adriatic sea, cold breeze from the Alps, you'll hear Italian language and feel la dolce vita. Located by the old main road connecting Ljubljana and Koper, this place is still surviving although the super modern highway has affected their business. But still there are people who would drive a few extra kilometers to enjoy good food. Among most frequent visitors are bikers - the old road with gentle curves and lovely scenery is a perfect playground for their horse-powers. The daily menu this time offered variety of food based on Asparagus - very popular local vegetable available during spring. I even ate the asparagus ice cream!!! Very good, mild, between salty ands sweet, served with white wine jelly. On the picture:Beef-stake with...

Modri Val = Blue Wave: Sinfully Good Food!

by KristaB

After visiting Kobarid museum, we went looking for a good restaurant. It is very easy to find one, since there are 3 superb restaurants in Kobarid, but all full of Italian tourists. Well, they are sort of Food tourists, coming over the border for cheap yet fantastic food. Raw fresh oysters, raw fish, mussels, grilled fish, pasta with truffles - everything was delicious.

Ask about the music played at night

by karenincalifornia

On the second day we were in Bled, we explored the town and wanted to pick out the perfect place for dinner that night. We came across a charming restaurant owned by two brother from what was then Czechoslavakia. Soft natural afternoon light was streaming through the windows, and a Beethoven sonata was playing on the stereo. What ambiance. We told the brothers we would be back that evening. We went back that night, but gone was the natural lighting and the Beethoven Sonata. Instead the restaurant was brightly lit and Kenny Rogers' "The Gambler" was blaring out over a loudspeaker system. We wondered what happened to the Beethoven sonata. The Czech brothers told us that people want to hear US country western music, not music by a German classic composer. They had to play the country western to get people in the door. Interesting what sells in each country...

Drinks

by SueWarwick

Slovenia produces some fine wines which (at present) are not available outside the country. Bottles can be bought cheaply in Supermarkets but make sure you are aware of the duty which is different from countries in the EU. Returning to England you can bring two litres of wine home.Wines include the red Barbera which is grown mainly in Primorje which is near the coast and has a Mediterranean climate. It is the only region in which 50% of the wine produced is red, generally more white is produced. The Kras area of Primorje is the only place which produces the dark, full-bodied Kraski Teran. This area is know to the tourist as the home of the Postojna Caves. Merlot is also produced in the Primorje region, a slightly lighter wine, unlike the more robust Modra Frankinja which comes from the Posavje region. The Posavje region also produces Sentlovrenka. a wine related to Pinot Noir. Finally,...

Sokol: Perfect location for a New Year's Eve party!

by slarnach

This was recommended to me by VTers who live locally and it was great. The food was delicious, and the staff were lovely. There was also a house band playing a mixture of Slovenian folky stuff and covers, and everyone danced between courses! We had a six course special New Year's Eve menu. Yes, SIX courses. So the dancing was a necessary part of the evening - work off the pasta course then get back to your seat for the main dish, and so on. It really was an enormous amount of food, but fortunately Nathan and I are extreemly greedy people.

My top four in...

by slarnach

My top four in Ljubljana:1.Pri Vitezu - splendid Adriatic cooking in a smart setting, and good for a formal meal before a Summer concert at the Krizanke nearby. (Nathan said his pate starter was "the best food I have ever eaten - ever". So there you go.)2.Gostilna As - charming service and more wonderful traditional cuisine including a lot of really interesting seafood dishes. Tasty razor clams.3.Zlata Ribca - good seafood with a great location for people-watching by the river.4.Figovec - delicious njoki (gnocchi) and other traditional treats in a place full of understated Slovene charm. Brilliant staff, again. Have I mentioned the Slovenian wines? Well they're very, very good. These recommendations are good value by UK standards, but at the top end in Slovenia. For great value lunches the Ribca seafood bar in the fish market is a renowned destination for a quick fix of deep fried...
