What's a burek?

by jazezork

Guidebooks say you need to try eating a burek when you go to Slovenia. What's a burek, I wondered? A burek turned out to be flaky pastry rolled into a long sausage with some filling inside. The sausage-type roll then gets circled around itself in a spiral.Bureks are fast food: they're about as nutritious and about as tasty as something like Burger King or McDonalds -- i.e. not that nice, really. Good if you're hungry and you want to grab something quickly, but not something you'd really enjoy. The three usual types of fillings are Sirov Burek (cottage cheese filling), Mesni Burek (mince meat), and Pizza Burek, but some burek stands sell other types too. In my limited experience, the mesni burek is pretty bad, but the meat is nowhere near as bad as what passes for meat in an Australian "meat pie"! The sirov burek was ok, and the pizza burek a bit better. At 450 SIT (€1.90) (in central...

Pri sv. Florijanu: New generation of Slovenian cuisine

by GalaxyTrevel

Located on the way to the Ljubljana castle, this restaurant serves up a new generation of Slovenian cuisine. Try the chicken breast with coriander and grilled vegetables, accompanied by an arugula and Parmesan side salad. The minimalist interior and background jazz attract a young and ambitious crowd. When you look at a menu remember two key words: regional and seasonal. This is the way to find the best food in Slovenia. (You'll find menus in English, plus waitstaff who speak English, almost everywhere.) There are no pretensions at the table, and full respect is paid to simple traditional dishes. To really get down to basics, eat in a gostilna (country inn). Typical dishes are krvavice (black pudding) served with zganci (polenta) or sausages served with sauerkraut. Another favorite is bograc, a peppery stew similar to Hungarian goulash, made from either horse meat or beef. With the...

ex-Puccini restaurant, now La Storia Trattoria: Where to find some pasta

by anaiis

One of my favorites restaurants to have my meal in. At first, they definitely won my heart by putting a salad bar in an old piano. Then I have tried several of their pasta and loved it. I now keep coming back for the food and the athmosphere. But, on top of it all, I love sitting outside in the summer and eating. Even if you have to fight with There are several La Storia Trattoria restaurants in Slovenia: in Ljubljana, Celje and Maribor. So when seeing a Storia Trattoria restaurant you can't miss. And its a good, not expensive choice to have a drink or a meal. A lot of people think so and on the picture I took there is a rare rare moment of quietness in a restaurant (it happens on Sundays after 3.00 p.m.). You usually have to wait a few minutes for a table, but really just a few minutes (3-5), not any longer. Oh, that's easy. Risotto negro would definitely take number one place out of...

Villa Herberstein: Slovenian Mushrooms are Yum!

by adite

Villa Herberstein in Velenje was a private villa that has been transformed into a great restaurant. You can sample some of the Slovenian wines, which are quite excellent. The old world charm and ambience of the restaurant and the location - atop a hill with a lovely garden in front that provides a view of the Velenje town are the highlights of the restaurant. Mushrooms, in a typical Slovenian preparation. Yum! A word of caution though: Slovenian boasts of a vide variety of mushrooms and sometimes it can cause a stomach upset: I am told that the odds of getting a stomach upset is 1 in 4. So those with a tough constitution - don't miss the mushrooms!

SPiaggia Bar + Taverna: Portoroz

by call_me_rhia

Despite the italian name, the Spiaggia Bar it's a true slovenian restaurant.. but, being located on the beach, it caters to holidaymakers, obviously. I liked it, however -you can nearly eat with your feet in the sand. The Taverna restaurant unfortunately is a bit posh - but the food is superb. The restaurant is quite large but cosy, and the staff friendly.. they also speak italian fluently, which helped Spiaggia Bar: slovenian ham is truly delicious.. i think it's left to "mature" in karst caves... i've also had grilled calamari, and they were deliciousTaverna: buzzara mussles and baked scallops. heavenly. I also had a delicious dish of seafood pasta...

reataurant fontana: Piran

by call_me_rhia

It's a small restaurant witrh a nice verandah outside: there's not many tables or many people - which is an advantage, since you can be sure that the food you order is cooked right at that moment. For this reason service is relaxingly slow. seafood to die for, speecially sea-dates, which are forbidden on the other side of the adriatic sea (read: italy). They also had some other interesting shellfish: muscoli in italian (i'm afraid i don't know the english word). Meatwise i loved the cevapcici!

restaurant vila preseren: Bled

by call_me_rhia

The restaurant of Vila Preseren is open to non-residents too. There are two areas: one indoor and one outdoor. The outdoor one is the nicest of the two, provided the weather is fair. You can sit on a terrace on the lake, surrounded by trees, and enjoy Slovene specialities. Two of their famous specialities are the struckli (they serve you 2 or 3 sorts of them, with different fillings, and the cheese ones are particularly delicious) and the grilled mushrooms topped with gorgonzola sauce.

Gostisce "Homan": Nice Cafe and restaurant in Skofja Loka

by Pete_Barnett

Attractive coffeehouse and restaurant. Downstairs is the coffehouse serving drinks and excellent cakes and pastries. In the warm weather you can sit outside under the shade of the trees, watching the goings on in Mestni trg.Upstairs is a restaurant serving pasta, pizza and other substantial meals, but I didn't try this. The hot chocolate was the best I tasted in Slovenija!
