Cycling the Vrsic Pass

by birvine

From Kranjska Gora across the pass to Lepena is an unforgettable ride. Tough yes, there was physical pain from the sheer steepness of the ride, the views were spectacular. I was pulling a fairly heavily-loaded BOB trailer, (check them out), along with quite a bit of gear in rear panniers. I used primarily my lowest gear which was in the range of a 35 or 40 inch gear. Nonetheless it was tough. Mind you, by this point I was in fairly decent shape having ridden from Istanbul.Might I suggest that if you are considering riding the pass that you ensure your brakes are in absolutely top form. The descent over the north side was a screaming descent to say the least. Extremely steep, so much so that my hand seemed to turn into a claw I was clenching the brakes so hard. I became worried about the heat buildup from the constant braking so I would stop on each switch-back to get stream water and...

Kayaking, Canoeing, and Rafting

by GalaxyTrevel

Kayaking, canoeing, and rafting are becoming increasingly popular in Slovenia since many of our beautiful Slovene rivers are especially suitable for these sports: Soca (Isonzo), Sava, Kolpa, Krka, and Idrijca. In 1991, World Championship competitions in kayaking were held on the Soca (Isonzo) and Sava rivers. In various tourist centers around Slovenia there are clubs involved professionally in the widest range of water sports. It is easy to rent a canoe or to join a guided rafting trip.

swimming in Piran

by call_me_rhia

The sea near Piran is surprisingly nice - and the water clear... basically it screams for a swim. There's no real beaches in town but if you walk up to Saint George's church and then take the footpath that goes downhill at the back, you'll arrive at a nice pebble beach from where you can swim out. Refreshing! Swimsuit - but it's optional. A towel is more important

hiking at Triglav National Park

by call_me_rhia

WIth a group of friends, in july 2001, I went to Triglav National Park for a three days hike. Our aim was the summit of Mount Triglav - which never saw my face: 400 metres below the summit I chickened out. However I really had one of my most pleasant and spectacular hikes. This is our "route".Day 1- from Pokljuka to Dom Planicka Day 2 - from Dom Planicka to the Valleyy of the 7 lakesDay 3 - from the Valley of the 7 lakes to BohinjThere's a more detailed description of the hike in my Bled page. hiking boots are mandatory - and recommended are trekking poles: they do make a difference when walking over snowfields
