    Predjama Castle
    by mikelisaanna, 2 more photos
Predjama Castle is an unusual castle in that it is built into a large cave opening on a mountainside. As a result, it was able to withstand long sieges, since the occupants could exit through the cave to get supplies. The castle was built in the late 1500s. Its most infamous resident was Arazem Jamski, who was a sort of Slovenian Robin Hood.

The inside of the castle is rather plainly furnished, but the castle is still worth touring for its unusual construction and layout, and the views that you can get from the upper floors. You can also, for an extra fee, tour the cave. In August, the castle hosts a medieval-stlye tournament, complete with banquets and knights and other people in medieval costumes.

  • Directions: The Predjama castle is located about 9km beyond the Postojna Cave. From the cave you will see numerous signs marking the roads to the castle.

The Turjak Castle is one of the most important castles of the former Carniola region. It is located close to Ljubljana - about 30 km south of it and is recomanded also as a half day trip.
About 500 m from the main road there is the village Turjak and on the hill - the castle of Turjak.
Present castle was mentioned in 1220. It was owned by Auersperg family. It was burned down in 1943. Some parts were renovated later.
The renovation of the castle still continues.

Skofja Loka is the one-thousand year old town, about 25 km northwest of the capital Ljubljana in Gorenjska region. This old town is located at the confluence of the Selska Sora and the Poljanska Sora Rivers.

Skofja Loka today pleasantly combines a thousand years of tradition with a modern touch. In recent times there has been substantial development of the textile, wood and machine industries, but this has been deliberately kept to the outskirts of the town.

    The Logarska Valley is situated
deep in the heart of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, enshrouded by the lofty peaks of Kroficka, Ojstrica, Lucka Baba, Planjava, Brana, Turska Gora and Rinke, all of which rise above 2,000 metres.

The valley is divided into three parts: the lower tract is called Log, the central one Plest, whilst the upper part is known as Kot. Log and Plest are covered by meadows, whilst Kot is partially forested. Behind the green scenery of the forest one can hear the magnificent cascading of the Rinka Waterfall.

The attraction of Logarska Dolina Valley to the nature lover lies in its abundant natural sights coupled with an almost pristine environment. A characteristic mark is also imparted by the farmsteads which have over the centuries aided in contriving a cultural landscape fashioned by the hand of man. The result? - Complete harmony of man and nature, a characteristic seldom found in this day and age

The most beautiful river in Slovenia. The least polluted.

The upper part of the river and the valley is situated within the Triglav National Park and it is called Trenta. The valley as well as a big part of the Slovenian Alps was researched by a botanist, philosopher, researcher - Julius Kugy. In memory of him there is also a monument near the spring of river Soca.

The river is so clean, that's why it has a beautiful bright blue color and a lot of animals find their home in the river or near it. An example is the Soca trout. It is quite famous and it is good to eat as well. The last years the American trout has been pushing out the Soca trout, because they are more aggressive. The scientists are trying to save the fish, but it's going to be very hard and it's going to take a long time

If you visit the upper part of the valley, where the Soca is still untamed by dams, you will recognise in the wild, milky blue - green waters of the stream the headstrong character.

Area of Jezersko lies in the northern Slovenia not far from the border between Slovenia and Austria.
Jezersko means a place with a lake.
This area is surrounded with Karavanke and Kamnik's Alps. It is very popular touristic destination because of its unspoiled nature, its healthy alpine climate and its fine starting point to the mountains

Kropa is located at the bottom of amphitheatre, created by the slopes of Jelovica. It is accessible either from the north from Radovljica past Lancovo, from the east from Kranj past Podnart, or from the south from Drazgose past the village Jamnik. The place got its name Kropa upon steep mountain stream, which is on his way through the settlement like o boiling water in a pot. "Krop" means boiling water.
Kropa has more than five hundred years old ironwork tradition.
It is the place, worth to visit

Piran is a charming little medivial town, which is situated at the cape of the Piran peninsula. Its narrow streets and tight houses are a special charm of the town. Piran is actually one large museum with rich culture heritage. Absolutely worth to visit.

Cistercian Order originates from Egipt, Siria and Palestine and quickly spread to Europe.
St. Benedikt has Big impression on that order
and his motto was 'Ora et labora ' - Pray and Work.Benedictine monasteries were centres of catholic culture in Middle Ages.

Cistercian Abbey was built in 1132 .It was hardly damaged in second half of 16.century.
Renovation began in 1898 and life in abbey revived. There are not many monks in Sticna today but it is spiritual and cultural centre.

Besides the great Basilica the best known part of abbey is Krizni hodnik - Cross-shaped corridor. It has Roman base but early Gothic style is prevailing.

You can attend multimedia presentation about history and life in Abbey.

Monk Simon Asic was very well known herbalist. His recipes for herbal medicine were published in many books.

In the Abbey yard you can find Herbal Farmacy where you can buy many really good
things that are good for health - many sorts of tea, tintures, ointments, healing clay....

Skocjanske caves are one amazing natural site. River Reka (River) flows from it's spring some 30 km away, and here at the point where two different geological formations meet, this tiny river found it's way to the underground and disappears for the next 40 km. It resurfaces again in Italy, near Trieste.

Through time, the river dug its way through the ground hollowing series of spectacular canyons and carved rooms. The largest is Martelova room, one of the largest in Europe with horizontal floor plan of 12.000 m2.
