by anaiis When buying things, products, labeled with Slovenian Quality sign are superior to others. To gain this sign, products must fulfil many criteria and standards. I usually don't search for this sign, since I know which Slovenian products to trust, but if you follow this sign while shopping you won't be dissapointed. Leave a Comment

by anaiis You will probably notice the flea market in the centre of Ljubljana on Sunday. But thats not the one to visit, unless you are helplessly rich and have no imagination. The real thing is digging through garbage and bargain about some items you are lucky to find. The real flea market is in the part of Ljubljana, called Barje, near Avtosejem (used car market). (It has recently moved its location so dont rely on the picture - its has been taken on previous location.) Take bus number 1 on Sundays morning and wait until it stops. You are there. There is a small fee to pay for the entrance. Flea market is opened from 7 a.m. till 1 p.m. (yes, I guess there are actually people who get up at 7 a.m. on Sundays!) Remember - it is ONLY OPENED if good weather is quaranteed since everything happens outside. You will find amazing things there, some of them were a cult in the former state and comunism. But you have to have a lot of nerves and pay attention to what can be repeared, cleaned etc. and is not actually a garbage. There certainly IS a lot of garbage, so be prepared to dig. The flea market has already been discovered by tourists, so come early, when there is still something to be bought. You can also have a snack there and there is vegetable market nearby. And of course - you can also buy a used car nearby to drive home. Leave a Comment Other Contact: If you have came by car, you wil

View from the castle by bijo69 Slovenia's capital is a place which really surprised me positively. It has a beautifully restored old town to wander around or sit in one of the cafés along the Ljubljanica river and enjoy a drink. For a bit of an exercise, hike up the hill to the castle with splendid views over the town. People are friendly and you won't have any problems to communicate in English (or German). Leave a Comment

Ptuj the oldest town in Slovenia is situated in North-Eastern Slovenia. It used to be one of the most important towns in Central Europe in Middle Ages. One of the sights is for sure the castle of Ptuj, nowadays a museum, worth to visit. Ptuj has many cultural points of interest in town and the countryside. Leave a Comment

Skocian Cave by ant1606 Rocks in eastern Slovenia are mainly composed of calcium and other carbonates. Nature took advantage of this material and use dwater to carve beautiful caves in this region. The most famous is probably Postojna. A short walk after the entrance takes to the train station. Yes, you will visit the cave on board small cars organized as a train on rails. Do not expect a rollercoaster. This train runs horizontally through the first part of the cave in a loop back to the starting point. Train takes you to the starting point of the walking tour. Skocian is a different type of cave. Contrary to Postojna, it's a "live" cave where a water stream is still carving for your wonder. Walking tour of Skocian is up and down and through a bridge over the imposing creek. Main attraction here is a huge room with roaring and thundering water at work. Leave a Comment

Skofja Loka is one of the most ancient town in Slovenia. There you could visit the castle. It was built before 1202 and rebuilt after the earthquake of 1511. It hosts an archeological, ethnological and historical collection. Other things worth a look in Skofja Loka are; the Capuchin's Bridge; Homans' House (today it's a cafe and a Chinese restaurant) and some churches. On the last weekend of june a Medieval event is held in this town; the Venus Trail (see tip). There are several buses going from Ljubljana to Skofja Loka every day. The journey takes around 40 minutes. Leave a Comment Directions: Skokja Loka is about 23 km. northwest of Ljubljana.Website: www.skofjaloka.si

by sumit_b If you visit Slovenia, you will most likely end up in Ljubljana at some point. It is the capital city, but it feels more like small town. It an elegant place with beautiful architecture and uncrowded streets. You can explore a lot of the city on foot. Leave a Comment Address: Ljubljana, Slovenia

Bled by sumit_b This is a place right out of a fairy tale. Its complete with a cliff, castle, an island in the middle of a lake and churches. One thing that makes Bled extra special is the fact that there are no motor boats or jet skis on the lake. This makes it a very peaceful place. Leave a Comment Address: Bled, Slovenia

This place was founded in 1580 to provide horses to the Hapsburg royalty in Vienna and later (1735) evolved into the source for the Spanish Riding School. These are magnificent creatures who at birth are black or very dark brown and turn white as they mature which takes about 7 years. The ones who become star performers are selected during and after a 4 to 6 year training period. Tours are given frequently and last about 60-90 minutes. There are designated gathering spots for tours in 5 languages. We were joined by a Belgian couple and our guide was most knowledgeable. The tour includes pretty much all the facilities and the horses in stalls although many are on the grounds of 800 acres. You can also see either a training session or a performance. The tour and the performance together cost about $12-$15 and are well worth it. There is separate pricing for tours (about $7) and tour plus training session (about $10). We were there in the morning and missed the morning performance but left ot go cave exploring and came back for the afternoon performance and paid only the difference in price for the combination ticket. You can also see the horses in the pastures and as you can see from the photos get up close and personal with them. They are outside until 6:00 p.m when they are all brought in for the night. On the grounds there is also a small muesem which is of course devoted to horses and has a nice collection of paintings by an English artist named George Hamilton (not the US film star). There is also a small chapel dedicated to St. Anthony of Padua who is the patron saint of animals. He sure gets around this part of the world. Though we did not try them there are other attractions on the grounds including a casino and a golf course. After returning home we were delighted to learn that the Lipizanners will be appearing in Atlanta in December 2005 in honor of the 60th anniversary of the rescue of the breed by General Patton near the end of WWII. Leave a Comment Directions: Go south from Ljubljana on the freeway (maybe it is a tollway) about an hour or so and take the Divaca exit then follow the signs.
