Piran, A Little Piece of Venice in Slovenia

Piran is a beautiful Venetian Gothic town located on very short coast of Slovenia. The name means fires lit at Punta. It was originally a light house used to guide ships into the bay Gulf of Trieste during times long ago.

The old town is really quaint and beautiful. There are many Italian tourists here during the summer so it can get crowded but they tend to stay on the beach on the north side of town (and sometime forget to put on cloths).

The Church of St. George is a Renaissance/ Baroque church that dominates the peninsula. It has very similar characteristics of the tower structures found in Venice. There are some 15th century walls on the east side of the old town. Piran Harbour is a pleasant place with a square to the north surrounded by the town hall, court house, and post office. It is regular hang out for locals at the end of the day. On the end of the peninsula the streets get very narrow and you may find yourself experiencing some dejavous if you have already visited Venice.

    Kobarid Museum

We found this entirely by accident, due to me primarily hating reading travel guides etc about Slovenia. I like to take the car, glance at a map and see where the road takes me!! We drove through Kobarid on the way back from the Franja Partisan Hospital and saw the Museum, thought it looked interesting and vowed to return. After asking a couple of locals we discovered it was a museum dedicated primarily to the people of Kobarid and the surrounding area in the first world war and their experience of events on the Soca Front.

The museum comes from an interesting anti war standpoint. It's one of the few military museums I've seen whereby there's no real bias to either side of the battle lines. Containing an impressive collection of uniforms, weaponary, letters, maps and all other manner of military parafinalia, it's an extraordinary experience. We were there over 3 hours which is impressive considering those travelling with me being more outdoorsy than museum 'types' (not that there is such a thing!)

I digress! I wont go on to describe much more in detail, it spoils the whole experience., suffice to say it's a moving place to visit. I left with such a deep sadness over the suffering of both people and nature but it left me even more resolute on the sheer horrors of war and ever so slightly hopeful that we will continue to remember the past, perhaps learn from it and avoid such tradgedy ever again. One can hope!!!

The museum website provides all current information on opening times, tours, exhibitions and costs.

The town of Kobarid is situated in the north west of slovenia, approximately an hours drive from Bled or Idrija. whilst in the region it is worth exploring areas of the Soca Valley such as Cerkno and the Franja Partisan hospital. The drive through the Soca pass itself is visually stunning, you can quite simply park at almost the summit of a mountain and survey for miles in every direction.

In 1926, Blois de Chesne founded an alpine botanical garden in Trenta. In addition to the Julian Alps plants, it contains flowers from the Karavanke, the Kamniske Alps, Friulian mountain Ranges, pre-Alpine ranges and from the Karst section. Since 1951, Alpinum has been protected as a monument of designed natural environment and is managed by the Natural Sciences Museum of Slovenija.

This beautiful gletcher valley in the middle of Savinjske Alpe is a great place to visit both in vinter and summer time.

Logarska Dolina lies nestled deep in the heart of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, and due to its location is an ideal starting point for numerous excursions into the mountains. The foundations of the picturesque Alpine valley one can enjoy today were in fact laid down during the last Ice Age when a huge glacier abraded a 7-km long, 250-m wide "U" shaped basin. Today this trough-like valley lies enshrouded by the lofty peaks of Krofička, Ojstrica, Lučka Baba, Planjava, Brana, Turska Gora and Rinke, all of which rise above 2,000 metres. The valley is divided into three parts: the lower tract is called Log, the central one Plest, whilst the upper part is known as Kot. Log and Plest are covered by meadows, whilst Kot is partially forested.
The attraction of Logarska Dolina Valley to the nature lover lies in its abundant natural sights coupled with an almost pristine environment. A characteristic mark is also imparted by the farmsteads which have over the centuries aided in contriving a cultural landscape fashioned by the hand of man. The result? - Complete harmony of man and nature, a characteristic seldom found in this day and age. Because of all this Logarska Dolina was made a regional park, the future image of which rests on the successful development of quality tourism in symbiosis with nature.

Is the second largest city in Slovenija. Its foundation is linked with the important fortress-castle-on the hill known as the Pyramid. The town is renowned for its wine and, in particular, a 400-year-old vine located in the old town disctrict of Lent.

Bled is a village situated in northwestern Slovenia. It is well known for its lake. On this lake there is the only island in Slovenia. On this island there is a church. It dates from the 17th century and was built on an earlier church fron the 9th century. Bled also has a castle. They say this is the most ancient in all Slovenia.

I stayed in Bled only some hours. Nor did I go to the islet or visit the castle. I had a long stroll on the path looking on the lake and took some pics. I went to Slasciarna Smon (it's a cafe-confectionery) to have a kremna rezina (see tip) and I had a very good rice with seafood at the restaurant opposite the bus stop. I think its name is Pla Prinicu.

I hope to go back to Bled to visit the church and the castle.

There are direct buses going from Ljubljana to Bled. The journey takes around 1 hour and a half.

If you are visiting Lake Bled, you must take the walk up the hill and visit Bled Castle. The Castle dates back to the 11th century, but most of the structure you will see now was built in the 16th century, with 17th century renovations.
