Bled - Straza Chairlift and tobogganing

by Willettsworld

This is a great way to have fun and to get a good view of the lake. The Straza chairlift can be found near the town centre on the south shore of the lake. The chairlift runs up the Straza hill where you can see great views of the lake and then take the toboggan back down to the entrance. The toboggan criss-crosses back down the hill for a length of 520m on a metal track that is a couple of feet off the ground. The actual toboggan is controlled by a lever which you operate to slow down or go faster. It's possible to reach speeds of 40km/h and is great fun beleive me!Open: 9am-12pm & 4pm-8pm daily from 17th June-17th Sept. 10am-6pm weekends only from 18th Sept-27th Oct. 10am-5pm daily 28th Oct-5th Nov. 1 ride on the chairlift and toboggan costs 1,000SIT. Chairlift without toboggan costs 500SIT.

Bled - Slovenia's top picture-postcard destination

by Willettsworld

Bled is Slovenia's best known picture-postcard tourist attraction, so-much-so you think that it was designed just so that visitors can marvel at it. The small town is surrounded by the Julian Alps which are home to the Triglav National Park. Bled's main feature is its lake which is the location of Slovenia's only true island known as Bled Island. Around the main part of the lake lie a few large hotels that were built from the mid-19th century onwards to house the growing amount of tourists that were flocking to the area. The other main attraction is Bled Castle which is perched on a steep cliff more than 100m above the lake. It dates back to the 11th century although most of what now stands is from the 16th century. The views from it over the lake, town and surrounding mountains are wonderful. Another natural wonder to visit is Vintgar Gorge which lies about 3 miles north of the town...

Ljubljana - General architecture

by Willettsworld

Ljubljana has some very nice 18th and 19th century buildings:Hauptman House: Hauptman House (or Ura building) is located on the western side of Prešeren Square. It was once a shop for painters and was christened by the people of Ljubljana as "the little skyscraper". It was built on the site of an old inn in 1873 and although it suffered no damage during the earthquake of 1895 its owner decided to renovate. Grand hotel Union: The Grand hotel Union was Ljubljana's first modern hotel and, at the time when it was built, the city's largest building. It boasted the largest hall on the Balkans, which was due to its complex iron roof structure considered to be a great technological achievement. The building, which measured almost 100 metres long, was built by architect Josip Vancaš between 1903 and 1905.Cooperative Bank: The Cooperative Bank building is located across the road from the Grand...

Ljubljana - Roman Wall/Remains

by Willettsworld

Jakopic Garden: In the garden behind the house where the impressionist painter Rihard Jakopic once worked (Mirje 4) are the Roman remains of one of the terraced houses built in the 1st century AD. The ruins feature household artifacts, mosaics and the remains of a heating and sewage system. It was not possible to actually enter onto the site itself. To do this you have to get in contact with the City Museum.Roman Wall on Mirje: The former Roman town of Emona, which the modern city of Ljubljana is built upon, had a Roman wall of which a part of can be seen today. It was built in AD15 and measured 2.4m wide and between 6-8m high. Included in the wall were at least 26 towers and four main entrances. The best preserved section can be found on Mirje which lies just south of the city centre. This section was renovated in the 1930's by the architect Jože Plecnik.Ferant Garden: Behind the...

Ljubljana - Trnovo district

by Willettsworld

Trnovo lies to the south of the city centre and is full of nice large single buildings. Trnovo bridge was designed by architect Jože Plecnik between 1928 and 1932 and straddles the narrow picturesque Gradascica Canal. The bridge features 5 of Plecnik's trademark pyramids and Nikolaj Pirnat's stone statue of St. John the Baptist, the patron of the Trnovo Church. The most remarkable decorative element are the two rows of birch trees planted into the bridge. At the sides, the bridge is covered with roughly finished stone blocks. On the Krakovo district end of the bridge there is stone plaque saying "Krakovo", and on the Trnovo district end a plaque saying "Trnovo". The present Trnovo Church - Church of St John the Baptist was built between 1854 and 1857 on the site of the former church that dated from 1753. It assumed its present neo-Romanic appearance after the earthquake in 1895 when it...

Ljubljana - Botanical Gardens

by Willettsworld

The Botanical Garden is located near where the Gruber Canal meets the Ljubljanica River to the south of the Old Town. The garden was established as the Garden of Native Flora in 1810. Under the French in Ljubljana, the oldest, still active institute for further education - Ecoles centrales - was established of which a part was the Botanical Garden. The first plants were planted on the garden off today's Izanska Cesta in the spring of 1810. The garden today contains 4500 species of plants of trees, about a third of which are indigenous, and has been overseen by the University of Ljubljana since 1920.Open: 7am-7pm. Admission: Free.

Ljubljana - Castle

by Willettsworld

There has been some kind of fortification on the hill overlooking Ljubljana since at least the time of the Celts and Illyrians. The Romans had a military post here. The beginnings of the present day castle go back to the 9th century with a wooden fortress, although the castle building is first mentioned only in 1144. Th existing building mostly dates from the 16th century following the earthquake of 1511 with further renovations in the 17th century when it started being used as a royal residence. The castle was then turned into a prison in the beginning of the 19th century and was used as such right up until 1945. After this the castle deteriorated until it was restored fairly recently.Inside, you can visit the virtual museum which is a 3D video presentation charting the history of the castle and the growth and building of the city. It goes on for about 30mins and is well worth a visit....

Ljubljana - Dragon Bridge

by Willettsworld

This bridge replaced an older wooden bridge called the Butcher's Bridge which was built in 1819. The current bridge was built between the years 1900 to 1901 under the name of Jubilee Bridge, and was Slovenia's first bridge with an asphalt paving. It is one of Ljubljana's most representative examples of Art Nouveau architecture, the city's first reinforced concrete bridge, and one of the first bridges of its kind in Europe. The four copper dragons depict the symbol of Ljubljana and were designed by architect Jurij Zaninoviæ. The original designed were actually based on winged lions and not dragons and it is said by locals that the dragons wag their tails whenever a virgin crosses the bridge.

Ljubljana - Stari trg/old town

by Willettsworld

Stari trg or Old Square isn't actually a square but a narrow street lined with shops and small restaurants and winds itself down from near Cobbler Bridge to the Hercules Fountain in Levstikov trg. Several nice buildings line the street such as Schweiger House with its large Atlas supporting the upper balcony. If you walk down from the castle, take the southern route down the steps on Reber Ulica which will lead you straight onto Stari trg.In the centre of Levstikov trg, which lies just south of Stari trg, is the Hercules Fountain. The actual statue you see today is a copy of the original 17th century statue which know resides in the Town Hall.

Ljubljana - Ursuline Church of the Holy Trinity

by Willettsworld

This beautiful Baroque church is located in Kongresni Trg (Congress Square) and was built by architect Carlo Marinuzzi between 1718 and 1726. It was commissioned by Jakob Schell von Schellenburg, a wealthy merchant and financier from Ljubljana, and his wife Ana Katarina. The church originally had a belfry but was pulled down after the earthquake of 1895.The main altar made of multicoloured African marble was in the period from 1730 to 1740 carved by Francesco Robba. The most beautiful of the four side altars, which is known under the name of Ecce homo, was made by Henrik M. Löhr. The most notable paintings kept at the church include the large Jacopo Palma Jr.'s paintings of Virgin Mary with the Saints, St. Louis of Toulouse and St. Bonaventura, and Valentin Metzinger's paintings of St. Ursula and St. Augustine.
