Ljubljana - Slovenia Ethnographic Museum

by Willettsworld

The Slovenian Ethnographic Museum is Slovenia's main museum responsible for the maintenance, research, comprehension and understanding of Slovenian, European and non-European collections of material, social and spiritual cultural heritage items. It was founded in 1923, when it was separated from the National Museum of Slovenia. The museum has a vast collection of anything associated with the country's culture and history spread over 4 floors. One floor is completely full of some 187 chests, of which 171 are of Slovene origin. They date from the 16th century right up to the 20th century and were used in rural environments to store clothes, documents, money, food and produce and are beautifully decorated.Open: 10am-6pm Tues-Sun. Closed Mondays. Admission: 800 SIT.

Ljubljana - Railway Museum

by Willettsworld

For me, this was one of the best museums in Ljubljana and it will be yours if, like me, you're a bit of a steam buff. The museum has a large collection of engines that are housed in the 'roundhouse', a semicircular shed, and other railway paraphernalia such as signals and uniforms. I arrived at the museum and was greeted by a lovely girl who showed me around a bit and explained certain areas in excellent English and then left me to wander around on my own. The engines inside the shed have all been very well maintained and have writen details about them in English along the wall. They also have a few in the workshed and a few rusty examples outside. The oldest engine they have was built in 1861 and the largest still runs and weighs a massive 160 tonnes. Beside the shed where the engines are kept is a modern building that houses uniforms, signals, communication equipmen and a...

Ljubljana - National Museum of Slovenia

by Willettsworld

This museum is located in the centre of Ljubljana, in a neo-Renaissance palace built by architect Viljem Treo between 1883 and 1885 but the museums history goes back to 1821. The main part of the museum displays exhibits tracing the country's history and culture and include the world's oldest instrument - a bone flute said to be 55,000 years old. Other exhibits include a lot of stone statues and tablets and burial remains. The museum also includes Slovenia's only Egyptian mummy and other Egyptology artifacts. There was also a big exhibition on the Euro which Slovenia will join on 1/1/2007. The building also houses the Slovenian Museum of Natural History.Open: 10am-6pm daily. Admission: 700 SIT or 1000 SIT if combined with the Slovenian Museum of Natural History.

Ljubljana - National Gallery

by Willettsworld

The National Gallery of Slovenia is half housed in the wonderfully classical building built by the Czech architect František Edmund Škabrout in 1896 and in a modern annexe built in 1993. The area of the gallery held in the older building contains 19th and 20th century sculpture, Slovene Modern Art, Realism paintings and paintings from the Middle Ages through to the 18th century. One thing of note is that the floor is very squeeky as you walk through each section so you try and walk on tip toes so as not to disturb other people! The modern annexe contains Italian, Spanish, French, Flemish and Dutch paintings.Open: 10am-6pm Tue-Sun. Closed Mondays. Admission: 1000SIT.

Ljubljana - Trg Republike & Parliament

by Willettsworld

Trg Republike (Republic Square) isn't the best looking square in the world. It's dominated by two rather ugly tower blocks built in the 1960's - the TR3 (with the weathered green bronze top) and the headquarters of the Nova Ljubjlanaska Banka. At the other end of the square lies the almost unnoticeable Parliament building built in 1959. At the edge of the square there are several monuments, the largest being the Monument to Revolution, a work by the Slovenian sculptor Drago Tršar unveiled in 1975. The square was the location where the independence of Slovenia was announced on 25th June 1991.

Ljubljana - City Museum

by Willettsworld

The City Museum is housed in a lovely building that was once Auersperg Palace, built in 1642. The actual site the building is on dates back way further - to the Romans as archaeological digs have unearthed several artefacts which are on display. There are also parts of walls from the same period all the way through to the medieval period. Some of the best areas are of the city through the communist period and the struggle for independence.Open: 10am-6pm Tue-Sun. Closed Monday. Admission: 500SIT.

Ljubljana - Ljubljanica River

by Willettsworld

The Ljubljanica River flows quietly through the centre of Ljubljana with hardly a ripple on it as I only ever saw one tourist boat on it! The river is also known as The River of Seven Names and empties itself into the Sava 10km to the northeast of the city centre. About 1km further upstream from the Triple Bridge lie two canals - the Gruber (built in 1783) and Gradascica which meet the river. It is believed that the first bridge across the Ljubljanica river was built back in Roman times, most probably somewhere between the present Cobblers' Bridge and Šentjakob Bridge. The medieval Ljubljana boasted two wooden bridges, an old bridge located at the site of the present Triple Bridge and the Butchers' Bridge, which was located at the site of the present Cobblers' Bridge. Architect Jože Pleènik redesigned the embankments with tree-lined walks.

Ljubljana - Triple Bridge (Tromostovje)

by Willettsworld

The Triple Bridge is one of the symbols of the city. It links Presernov Square and the north of the city centre with the Old Town over the Ljubljanica River. It was built in 1842 as a single bridge known as Spital Bridge and replaced an old medieval wooden bridge. The two pedestrian bridges were added in 1931 by architect Jože Pleènik who removed the metal balustrades from the main bridge and finished all three bridges with massive stone balustrades and lamps. If you look between the bridges you may see some strange goings on. When I was there, there was a collection of dressed mannequins standing and sitting in deck chairs beside the river. Why? Who knows!

Ljubljana - Franciscan Church of the Annunciation

by Willettsworld

This colourful church dominates the northern side, and indeed, the whole of Prešernov Square. It was built between 1646 and 1660 in true Italian Baroque style with the facade being completed in 1700. The copper statue on top of the facade is of St Mary and is the largest statue in Ljubljana. When I entered the church for the first there was a service taking place so I came back later in the day to take photos. The interior features six side altars and a main altar which was designed by the Italian sculptor Francesco Robba. The interior only assumed its present appearance after the 1895 earthquake and features mid-19th century frescoes by Matevž Langus.

Ljubljana - Prešernov trg

by Willettsworld

Prešernov trg is a small square right in the centre of Ljubljana and will probably be your first port of call. It's named after the great Slovenian poet France Prešernov (1800-1849) who appears on the 1000 Tolar banknote and whose statue can be found in the square. The square was once a crossroads located in front of the town gate in medieval times before being turned into the square we see today in the 19th century after the town walls were pulled down. The main building on the square is the Franciscan Church of Annunciation which was built in the 17th century. Other buildings include the Central Pharmacy to the east with the Urbanc building nearby and the Hauptman House to the west. The southern side of the square is open to the Ljubljanica River that can be crossed by the Triple Bridge. The tourist train to Ljubljana Castle runs from here.
