Ljubljana – General

by Willettsworld

Ljubljana is one of the most relaxing capital city's I've ever visited. The city is fairly quiet with not that many local people walking around and also not much traffic clogging up the streets. Yes tourism is here but it doesn't stand out like a soar thumb like in other European city's as I suppose the city is fairly off the beaten track compared with other European destinations. But that doesn't mean there's no reason to visit here. Ljubljana has plenty of places to visit whether they be the city's castle which offers great views over the area from its hill top position, the fine museum's and art galleries or taking in the local culture with good local food and drink (especially the beer!). Plus, things are cheap here. Much cheaper than in other western European city's.I came here as my first port of call as part of a two week tour round Slovenia. It's easy to get to if travelling from...

Triglav National Park

by mikelisaanna

Triglav National Park was created to preserve some of Slovenia's best Alpine landscapes, including Mount Triglav, Slovenia's tallest mountain. The park also includes Lake Bohinj, a georgeous Alpine lake, and the Savice waterfalls.

Lake Bohinj

by mikelisaanna

Lake Bohinj is about 20km west of Lake Bled in Triglav National Park. It is less built up and crowded than Lake Bled because it is further from Ljubljana and the main highway. Lake Bohinj is a glacial lake that is located in a spectacular box canyon that features rugged cliffs on three sides that loom at least 2000 feet above the lake. The best views of the lake and the surrounding mountains are available from the top of the Vogel gondola at the southwestern end of the lake. On a clear day, you can see all the way to Mount Triglav and the other high peaks of the Slovene Alps.

Lake Bled

by mikelisaanna

Lake Bled is a scenic lake that is locate about an hour's drive northof Ljubljana. It is surrounded by mountains and features a historic castle that looms above it on a high rocky outcropping. The castle dates back to around 1000AD, and assumed its existing form around 1700. There lake's other major architectural feature is the Church of the Assumption, which is located on an island at the lake's western end. Lake Bled is a popular summer and winter weekend destination for the residents of Ljubljana. As a result, it is best to visit during the week, when it is less crowded. There are numerous hotels around lake Bled, ranging from basic to upscale. Some of the hotels feature spas fed by the natural springs that feed the lake.

Postojna Cave

by mikelisaanna

Postojna is one of Slovenia's two most famous and spectacular caves (the other is Skopjan, which is even larger). It is well worth touring. A small train takes vistors a mile into the mountain, where they then tour about 2km of the cave's most spectacular sections, which are full of dramatic stalactites and stalagmites. Some of the cave's chambers are over 100 feet tall and hundreds of feet long. The tours last about 90 minutes and are available in a number of languages, including Slovene, English, German, and Italian. The Postojna cave has over 20 km of passages. If you want to see sections which are not included on the regular tour, you can book special adventure tours that go into some of the caves more challenging and out-of-the-way sections.

Predjama Castle

by mikelisaanna

Predjama Castle is an unusual castle in that it is built into a large cave opening on a mountainside. As a result, it was able to withstand long sieges, since the occupants could exit through the cave to get supplies. The castle was built in the late 1500s. Its most infamous resident was Arazem Jamski, who was a sort of Slovenian Robin Hood. The inside of the castle is rather plainly furnished, but the castle is still worth touring for its unusual construction and layout, and the views that you can get from the upper floors. You can also, for an extra fee, tour the cave. In August, the castle hosts a medieval-stlye tournament, complete with banquets and knights and other people in medieval costumes.

Piran

by mikelisaanna

Piran is an old Ventian port town that occupies a peninsula that juts out into the Adriatic Sea. The streets of Piran are too narrow for cars, so you must park on the edge of town and walk in. We had fun wandering through the narrow streets and the harbor, and had a great meal at one of the town's many waterfront restaurants. Piran has a number of old interesting churches and a couple of small museums to tour. The best view of the town is available from the towers on the old city walls that loom above the town on the top of the hill.

Ptuj - Sleeping beauty

by succccccubus

Ptuj is the oldest, 2000 years old town in Slovenia. It is not very crowded, because most of tourist visit only the west of country, so you can enjoy a peaceful holiday here.It is much easier to describe Ptuj's location between Slovenske gorice and Haloze and between Dravsko polje and Ptujsko polje than to write a short history of the city. Its history is rich and the city has numerous monuments to prove it. Its history reaches back to the Stone Age, but the city experienced its greatest flowering in the Roman period. The name originates in the times of Emperor Trajan, who granted the settlement city status and named it Colonia Ulpia Traiana Poetovio. In 69 A.D., Emperor Vespasian was elected in Ptuj, and the first written mention of the city of Ptuj is from the same year. Roman Poetovio developed into an important military, commercial, customs, and administrative center. Forty thousand...

Maribor

by Airpunk

Maribor is Slovenia's second largest city and not a typical tourist destination. It offers a couple of interesting buildings like the city's castle or the old towers along the Drava river. You can also walk to some nearby destinations, like the surrounding hills where you can get a nice view over the town. Also, a walk along the Drava is recommendable. Due to its university, the town has a relatively young population.Unfortunately, it was raining heavily so that I didn't enjoy Maribor that much. Depending on how much you would like to see (visit the museum, walk up the hills etc.), plan 1 to 1 1/2 days for Maribor. More tips are avaiblable on my Maribor page.

Bled

by Airpunk

Bled is a popular destination for hiking and to enjoy the landscape. Beside a small island with a church, it also has a castle to offer. A typical tourist destination, but nice for a daytrip. The town itself is not so exciting, if you are not into spa's, cafés wellness and such things.Bled is easy to reach from Ljubljana by bus. I would like to recommend it for half a day - a walk around lake Bled takes from 4 to 6 hourse and will give you an overview as well as the chance to visit all mayor sights. Add up to two hours, if you want to row (or be rowed) to the island. For further information, check out my Bled tips.
