Wonderful Prancing Horses

This place was founded in 1580 to provide horses to the Hapsburg royalty in Vienna and later (1735) evolved into the source for the Spanish Riding School. These are magnificent creatures who at birth are black or very dark brown and turn white as they mature which takes about 7 years. The ones who become star performers are selected during and after a 4 to 6 year training period.Tours are given frequently and last about 60-90 minutes. There are designated gathering spots for tours in 5 languages. We were joined by a Belgian couple and our guide was most knowledgeable. The tour includes pretty much all the facilities and the horses in stalls although many are on the grounds of 800 acres. You can also see either a training session or a performance. The tour and the performance together cost about $12-$15 and are well worth it. There is separate pricing for tours (about $7) and tour plus...

SKOCJANSKE JAME Amazingly there are over 7,000 caves in Slovenia. In a country this small, you have to watch where you are going or you might fall into one of them. The southern part of Slovenia is called the "Karst" which means an arid limestone plateau. It is a specific region in the southwest (near Italy) and comes from the Slovene word Kras.We didn't fall into this cave, but went intentionally. The Reka-Velka river flows underground here and has created an eerie and wonderful underground myriad of stalgmites and stalactites with an amazing variety of red, white and black formations. At one point there is a footbridge 150 feet above the water and huge caverns at several points. The cave can only be seen on the guided tours which take about 1.5 hours and cover about 2 miles. There is also a bit of up and downhill walking to and from the cave, but at the end there is a funicular to take...

If you are looking for stalagmites and stalactites you better go to Postonja or some other cave. But, still this is one of the most impressive caves I've seen. It's a huge cave with Europe's biggest undergound canyon in it. Going down into the cave feels like going down to hell... You can only see some lights directing you downwards. Vintgar Gorge

If you are in Bled you should visit the nearby Vintgar Gorge. It is one of the most beautiful places in the area and possibly in Slovenia. The walk is quite easy, about 1.6 km from one entrance to the to the other, mostly on wooden decks. There is a beautiful waterfall next to the northern entrance.The gorge is open daily from 8:00 to 19:00, but it is closed in the winter. The entrance fee is SIT 600 for adults, SIT 500 for students and groups of 10 or more and SIT 250 for children up to 14 years old.See more pictures of the gorge in my Podhom page.

Slovenia's capital is a place which really surprised me positively. It has a beautifully restored old town to wander around or sit in one of the cafés along the Ljubljanica river and enjoy a drink. For a bit of an exercise, hike up the hill to the castle with splendid views over the town. People are friendly and you won't have any problems to communicate in English (or German).
