Postojna (Postumia) and Skocian Caves

by ant1606

Rocks in eastern Slovenia are mainly composed of calcium and other carbonates. Nature took advantage of this material and use dwater to carve beautiful caves in this region. The most famous is probably Postojna. A short walk after the entrance takes to the train station. Yes, you will visit the cave on board small cars organized as a train on rails. Do not expect a rollercoaster. This train runs horizontally through the first part of the cave in a loop back to the starting point. Train takes you to the starting point of the walking tour.Skocian is a different type of cave. Contrary to Postojna, it's a "live" cave where a water stream is still carving for your wonder. Walking tour of Skocian is up and down and through a bridge over the imposing creek. Main attraction here is a huge room with roaring and thundering water at work.

Bled - Vintgar Gorge

Near Bled there's an interesting gorge named Vintgar. The weather had been horrible for many days and the water stream was well swollen above its normal standards. It was still raining but we decided to take the tour anyway and in fact we were alone in the gorge.

Bled

by ant1606

Former part of Yugoslavia, Slovenia gained independence and it's now one among the smallest EU countries.Triglav National Park borders with Austria and Italy. I had my army service in Tarvisio, Italy, and remember seeing Mount Triglav from there. Bled is a small town in the mountains and famous for its lake. Plenty of B&B accommodation here. Boat rentals available to reach the tiny island in the middle of the lake. Good and quiet place for walks.Another nearby lake is Bohinj, fed by a waterfall.

Bohinj

by Natrix

If you love nature, the beautiful Bohinj lake and the national park surrounding mount Triglav, the highest peak of the Slovene Alps, is the place to go. You can go for hiking here. In winter you can ski and in summer you can swim in the clean lake.

Ljubliana

by Natrix

The name "Ljubliana" is derived from an old word for love and this city is indeed lovely! From all major cities in eastern Europe I've visited so far I like it best. Yet it's an insider tip among the tourists, but not for much longer I think ... What I especially love about Ljubliana is the unique blend of Baroque and Jugendstil style, the many pretty cafés and the market. Ljubliana is also not too big, so you can feel very comfortable as a visitor.

Bled

by Natrix

The town of Bled is one of the most famous spots in Slovenia and as you can see, it's very pretty and romantic. To get this fantastic view you need to go up to the castle on the hill. The castle is actually Slovenia's oldest castle. To enter the castle and the museum you have to pay a couple of Euros. From May to October it's open till 8 PM, the rest of the year only till 5. Another place to visit in Bled is the little island with St. Mary's church. You can take a gondola to get there. I didn't go there though, so I can't say whether it's worthwhile. In summer, it's possible to swim in the Bled lake, but I haven't tried that yet either. You should also try the famous "Kremsnite" cake while in Bled (I must say though I liked the ones in Samobor/Croatia better...)!

Castle Hunt

by Assenczo

Ljubliana CastleGo to the top of the hill where a renovated castle is situated. The place does not make you feel as if you are back in time but there are splendid views of the city and the Alps, shaping the horizon.
