Kobarid Museum

by Diosa

We found this entirely by accident, due to me primarily hating reading travel guides etc about Slovenia. I like to take the car, glance at a map and see where the road takes me!! We drove through Kobarid on the way back from the Franja Partisan Hospital and saw the Museum, thought it looked interesting and vowed to return. After asking a couple of locals we discovered it was a museum dedicated primarily to the people of Kobarid and the surrounding area in the first world war and their experience of events on the Soca Front. The museum comes from an interesting anti war standpoint. It's one of the few military museums I've seen whereby there's no real bias to either side of the battle lines. Containing an impressive collection of uniforms, weaponary, letters, maps and all other manner of military parafinalia, it's an extraordinary experience. We were there over 3 hours which is impressive...

Hrastovlje

by CCW

This little church was one of the highlights of my trip: it's an unassuming stone building surrounded by formidable-looking walls, but the interior is completely covered with spectacular 15th-century frescoes. Because they were whitewashed over for several centuries, the colors are fresh and the details are well-preserved. The themes are mostly the usual medieval fare (the creation, the fall of Adam and Eve, the crucifixion, etc.), but the Three Kings panel includes scenes from daily life, such as fishing and farming. The most famous panel is the Dance of Death; while the theme isn't nearly as radical or as rare as the P.R. makes it out to be, it's well done and impressive.A woman in the village keeps the key to the church, and if she's not on the premises you have to go look for her, but the house is well signposted. She'll play you a taped guide to the frescoes, and walk around the...

Skocjan Cave

by CCW

I'm not a big fan of caves, but this is a must-see: it isn't as colorful as some, although there are roomfuls of impressive stalactites, stalagmites, "frozen waterfall" formations, etc. But the 105-meter-high cavern, crossed by a little bridge 48 meters above the river, is guaranteed to boggle your mind.Note: The tour is fairly strenuous -- you walk a couple of kms and climb hundreds of steps up and down -- so it isn't suitable for the mobility-impaired or (needless to say) the claustrophobic.

Postojna caves

by chrismj

The best bit is thinking you are going to be decapitated as the train rattles through small tunnels. It's nice to be able to fall behind the guides a bit and experience the eerie shapes and lighting by yourself sometimes. The little lizard beasties are quite curious too.Well worth a look, even if the entrance fee is pretty steep - over 10 euro if I remember right.

Bled in the Julian Alps

by Waxbag

Bled is resort town located on a beautiful glacial lake in the Julian Alps. You have your quaint little church situated on a small island in the middle of the lake with a castle perched on the cliff overlooking the lake with the Alps in the background. You can take some spectacular photos here. It is nice to walk around the entire lake and take in all the great views.

Piran, A Little Piece of Venice in Slovenia

by Waxbag

Piran is a beautiful Venetian Gothic town located on very short coast of Slovenia. The name means fires lit at Punta. It was originally a light house used to guide ships into the bay Gulf of Trieste during times long ago.The old town is really quaint and beautiful. There are many Italian tourists here during the summer so it can get crowded but they tend to stay on the beach on the north side of town (and sometime forget to put on cloths). The Church of St. George is a Renaissance/ Baroque church that dominates the peninsula. It has very similar characteristics of the tower structures found in Venice. There are some 15th century walls on the east side of the old town. Piran Harbour is a pleasant place with a square to the north surrounded by the town hall, court house, and post office. It is regular hang out for locals at the end of the day. On the end of the peninsula the streets get...

Skocjan Caves

by Waxbag

Skocjan Caves are one of the highlights of all of Europe let alone the tiny country of Slovenia. This UNESCO World Heritage List site is one of the best and most accessible cave systems in the world. You start the tour through a man made bore hole through the back of the cave and then work your way to the cave’s mouth. Along the way you see really impressive natural surroundings with stalactites and stalagmites and all kind of formation that can look like anything in your imagination. The mind blowing part of the tour is at the end when you step out of your narrow cave passageway into the huge subterranean space. This is near the mouth of an underground river which can be heard in a gorge below. A bridge cross the river and if you stop half way and look down there is a considerable drop to the water below. If you look up it is a considerable distance of the cave’s ceiling above. This...

The Castle

by blint

The castle which sits on Grad (the castle hill) has been reconstructed and rebuilt over the decades. Archaeological research has proven the continuous presence of a castle on Grad since 1200 BC. Although the one that stands there now is definitely not that old! It in fact it only dates back to the Hapsburg Empire. Since then more and more has been added right up until 1990 when the pentagonal entrance tower was inaugurated. At one time it was used as a garrison and a jail!It has some colourful decor inside which is dates back to the 16th ad 17th centuries. To enter the castle is free. Inside you can see the virtual museum which chronicles the history of Ljubljana. Open: 10.00-18.00.It is also the location for festival events and weddings. It has two wedding suites, a viewing tower,a café and a chapel too.The castle is open: Oct-Apr: 10am-9pm; May-Sep: 9am-10pm

Castle View

by blint

On the climb up to the slightly too moderncastle you are treated to a bird’s eye view of Slovenia's wonderful capital. You can see the wonderful Hapsburg architecture in the older buildings contrasted to the ugly practical concrete blocks built in the communist era. It's well worth the trip up the hill.
