ZELENICE

by mtncorg

This little natural reserve preserves the official source of the Sava River, the longest river in Slovenia and one of the most important rivers in Croatia and Serbia, as well. The park is accessed from a parking lot on the south side of the road – you can only get into the lot driving in an easterly direction. The park is about 1 km east from the town of Ratece near the Italian border or about 2 km west from Kranjska Gora. From the car park you have a short walk through the forest coming out at a series of emerald green pools at the bottom of which you can see water bubbling up. Mountains reflect in the still waters as trout swim in the depths and ducks meander along the surface. The water comes from the nearby Tamar Valley where they originally pop out of the limestone cliffs as the Izvir Nadiže. The waters quickly seep back underground and re-emerge here at a constant temperature of...

Skocjan Caves World Heritage Site

by Treeman28

Generally, UNESCO World Heritage Site status suggests a place is going to be worth seeing, but nothing could prepare for the scale and majesty of the Skocjan Caves.Led through a tunnel into a series of small antechambers, the initial sense is that much the same can be expected as from any subterranean experience. However, after passing through several halls with remarkable stalagmite formations, the main focus of the tour emerges...Looming before the visitor is a 120 foot high chasm, spanned by a bridge no more than two feet wide and lit by a chain of small lights in the rock, giving the impression of some sort of underground civilisation. For anyone who has seen or read the Lord of the Rings, the best comparison is to Khazhad-Dum. From here, the path climbs steeply to surface in the gaping mouth of Schmidl Hall, from where the optional path back up to the centre, while strenuous, passes...

Maribor - Franciscan Church

by Willettsworld

This large red brick church was built at the turn of the 19th century according to the designs of Viennese architect Richard Jordan. The site had previously been occupied by the Capuchin Convent which was also built from red bricks and built in the style of an old Roman basilica. The current church features two huge towers and three naves and is dedicated to St Mary. The interior features paintings by the Hungarian artist Ferenz Pruszinskay, the Way of the Cross was carved by Miloš Hohnjec from Celje and the organ was made by the Mariborian master Jožef Brandl.

Art Galleries

During our holiday to Venice, Budapest and Slovenia me and my boyfriend were going though a bit f a art gallery phase so we visited visited these two interesting lpaces is Ljubljana:We went to Moderna Galerija (Modern Art). It contains some interesting exhibitions on communist and post communist Slovenia. This was my favourite section. Though I remember that section to be more stylised photos more than anything. Of course some exhibitions were a bit lame, but that's normal with modern art. Open: 10.00-18.00, Mondays, holidays closed.Admission free on Saturdays after 14.00.We also went to the Narodna Galerija (the National Gallery) which has an interesting section on Slovene artists from the Middle Ages until now. They didn't really have any world famous artisits though. Open: 10.00-18.00, Mondays closed. In general I found these galleries interesting as they featured mainly unheard of...

Skocjan Caves - UNESCO World Natural Heritage site

by KristaB

Nature creates amazing sculptures through a long process of accumulating sediment - 100 to 150 years for 1 cm of growth.Stalactites are hanging down, water is slowly, very slowly dripping from their tip, their inside is hollow and resembles the pipe.Stalagmites are protruding upwards from the ground, their inside is full and they look rather organic. So here on the picture you can see famous formation from Skocjanske caves - the whole group of stalactites and stalagmites joined together. It is called the Pipe Organ, naturally.

The Guided Tour Through Skocjanske Caves

by KristaB

The excursion takes you through man made tunnel into the farthest end of the caves, and then you walk towards the exit - where the river enters the caves - enlarge the picture to see how tiny people are in the upper left corner. It is a pleasant guided tour, temperature is constant 12 - 13'C all year round. Wear good shoes, the floor is slippery and there are puddles and little streams to cross. The tour of the caves is less than 2 hours long. Entrance fee: 9 EUR for adults, 4 for childrenGuided tours only, at specific times during specific seasons - check the website.

Skofja Loka Castle

by croisbeauty

The Castle of Skofja Loka (Loski grad) dominates above the old part of the town. According to its history, the castle was pulled by earthquake in 1511, and was reconstructed again in 1513-1551 by bishop Philip. Today the Loka Museum offers archeological, historical, art, ethnology, and natural science exibitions. Among other things, the ethnology exibition presents the crafts that were once very active in the Škofja Loka area.

Caving in Krizna Jama

by cosmichoover

The guide at Krizna Jama offers a four hour trip underground, which is well worth the money. (I think we paid around 35 euros) No caving experience is necessary and he provides all the gear. The trip involves an initial short descent on foot to underground lakes, where you get to travel through some of the cave system in a dinghy. It's amazingly beautiful and peaceful, and the guide, Alojz, is extremely knowledgeable and his love for this cave is strongly evident. Advance booking is essential as only four people a day can do the tour, plus the tour is dependant on the water levels being low enough. The cave is huge (no claustrophobia to worry about), and the entrance contains fossils of the bears which once inhabited it. This cave is a world away from the tourist caves of Postojna, which although impressive, are a bit like going to Disney Land. In Krizna Jama it feels like you have this...
