MOUNTAINS ARE THE SOUL OF SLOVENIA

by mtncorg

This is one of the most glorious reasons for coming to Slovenia; the chance to wander in some first-class vertical landscape. The highest mountain, Triglav, is so near to the Slovenian heart that they have emblazoned the three-headed peak on their flag. Skiing, hiking, rafting, climbing, road tripping along the road that goes over the crazy Vrsic pass with more hairpins than you can count. And a great home base is to be found from VT'er Marko's aprtments in Dovje. From his front door you can make some great mountain tours, though it is nice to have a car to get to some trailheads (Marko can arrange affordable rental). Whether you just want to wander along an alpine stream in the Triglav National park or take on one of the Slovenian iron routes going up Triglav or the other peaks, you have a lot to choose from. And museum in Kobarid is an outsanding example of man's stupidity - many of...

VRSIC PASS

by mtncorg

At 1611 meters, this is Slovenia's highest road pass. The road leads from the upper Sava Dolinska valley around Kranska Gora to the Soca Valley. It is the best way for the non-hiker to experience the drama of the Julian Alps. The road is an adventure. Moutain walls tower above you, but you don't have much time to contemplate them as there are 50 hairpin turns requiring your attention - 24 on the Kranska Gora side (north) being cobblestoned on the curves themselves, adding more to the adventure. The grade is up to 14% - not the highest in Slovenia, but definitely steep. You are rarely out of second gear and many times, back down in first. This is not a great place for an automatic! Do the pass on a weekend and you will find what seems like half of Europe out on the road with you. Motorcyclists love the road and enjoy jockeying around the car traffic in emulation of video games they play...

KOBARID

by mtncorg

In the English-speaking world (and Italian, too), the town is know as Caporetto - the same name as the battle which took place around here in 1917 between forces of Imperial Austria and Germany and those of Italy. Before the battle, Austria and Italy had stalematted each other along the peaks high above the Soca/Isonzo River. Further south, 11 Italian offensives had gained little ground as the Italian Army strove to capture the port city of Trieste. The last of the offensives, while not succeeding, had given the Austrian command a good scare. The defeat of Russia had released enough troops from the East to let the Central Powers attempt a limited offensive aimed at ending the trheat to Trieste, once and for all. They were successful moving the front far to the west to the Piave River in Italy, thus ending the Alpine fighting in the mountains above Kobarid. Kobarid was at the heart of the...

KRN PEAK/MONTE NERO

by mtncorg

This is a beautiful peak - 2244 meters high - with cliffs on the north, west and eastern sides. 'Trails' reach the peak from most directions, but you have to use ladders bolted into the cliff faces on some of these 'trails'. From the Kobarid side, the trip is a long 5-7 hour plod up hot exposed slopes that you make you feel exactly the the way Italian soldiers felt as they approached their front lines along the very crest of teh peak in the First World War. From the north, you ascend from Krn Lake/Krnsko Jezero, first through a beautiful meadow/alp/plannina and then more slowly and more steeply up through the rocks. The rock mountain to the SE is Batognica, the site of very hard fighting in WWI.Atop Krn, you still find bunkers, old barbed wire and wonderous views. The entire Julian chain is there - actually much of Slovenia! the hill country to the south, extending to the Croatian...

PREDIL PASS

by mtncorg

North from Bovec, the Predil Pass gives one direct access to the Italian city of Tarvisio and southern Austria beyond. Many use this pass to get into the upper Sava valley around Kranjska Gora from the south as well, rather than the more intense Vrsic Pass. There is only one hairpin turn on the Slovene side and 6 on the Italian side, as opposed to Vrsic's 50. The pass is also 450 meters lower - 1156 meters. Just near the top, lie the remains of an old Austrian fort built during the Napoleonic times. For all of their efforts, French troops overcame the defenders - in 1809 - and the dead are buried together in a common grave just off the highway on the south side of the road, which drives directly through parts of the old fort. Mangart rises high above the pass to the east. Far below, is the small town of Log pod Mangartom, with its planinas and an old WWI cemetery. In a canyon between...

2. Things in Slovenia I miss in Norway!

by anaiis

Item N. 2: Bucno olje (Pumpkin seed oil)This is a delicacy produced in north-eastern part of Slovenia and usually put on a salad (green leaf or cabbage). Absolutely YUMMY. You may obtain pumpkin seed oil in most of the bigger stores in north-east, some large stores in Ljubljana, probably definitely at Ljubljana's market. Also great with bread: the same way as olive oil is sometimes eaten with bread. Certainly, you may buy also olive oil, produced in Slovenia, also recommended, but as you know, not so exotic. There is some Wikipedia article on this you might read, but please note I do not recommend pumpkin seed oil to be used as any kind of "treatment". I find it just a very delicious nutrient. Delightful, rich taste!

1. Things in Slovenia I miss in Norway!

by anaiis

Things in Slovenia I miss in Oslo mainly consider food items. Sorry, so profane. But Norway is a land of sugar obsession: you will find it in bread, yoghurt and, unfortunately, most of Norwegian chocolate. Many times in fish and meat dishes. Well, yuck. Item N.1: I miss so called "pockets" (zepki). This is "pirogi-like" cookie functioning desert. You may put any filling into them. They come traditionally topped with lots of icing sugar - so what do I actually miss? When I lived in Ljubljana, LONG LONG TIME AGO, I frequently visited a store in so called "covered area of eco-market" (pokriti del ekoloske trznice), very central in Ljubljana, next to Three Bridges and Presern square. There they sell delicious Slovenian specialities. Among them, Pecivo Hribar is my absolute favorite and the reason I am revealling this here is I am no longer a regular customer, so I dont care if all the...

Lipica.

by cachaseiro

The Lipica horse stables is one of my favorite places in Slovenia. It´s a place that was founded in 1580 to provide horses to the spanish riding school in Vienna and they made their own breed of horses there the lippizianer horses.Lipica today is a very well kept place with horse stables, riding shows, a hotel area and one of the few golf courses in Slovenia.A tour of the stables and a horse show is done a few times a day and well worth the entrance fee.

Piran

by MichaelFalk1969

Piran is a charming port city on the Adriatic shore of Slovenia. The Italian influence can bee seen everywhere: For centuries, Piran was integral part of the Venice sea empire. The Tartini square with its colourful houses, the "Campanile", the St. Georges Cathedral, several other baroque churches, a Franziscan monastery and remnants of the old Venetian city walls are well worth seeing. The best way to enjoy Piran though is just to stroll aimlessly through the city and admire the beauty of the place. Piran is located just a few kilometers west of Portoroz, via the highway Koper - Portoroz. You have to leave your car at a parking lot at the city entrance. From there it is a 5 minutes - walk to the Tartini square.

Piran

by Robmj

Slovenia's small and only bit of coastal territory is occupied by Piran, a quaint medieval fishing village. It has the usual suspects, narrow cobbled streets, church, city walls and is very nice. Lots of swimming spots and heaps of cafes, restaurants and bars. Seafood is the speciality which may or may not surprise you. When in Slovenia, do Piran.
