Ljubljana

by Robmj

Slovenia's capital provides a nice cosmopolitan experience to offset the rural and magnificent countryside that really is Slovenia. The old town dates from 1550 and is a lovely area with cobbled streets and a tree lined river running through it. Visit the Castle perched upon the hill with wonderful views over the old town and beyond.A lively nightlife will not leave you wondering what to do when dusk and darkness falls.

Lake Bled

by Robmj

Bled is a resort town in an incredible setting just a few kms from Slovenia's capital of Ljubljana.Bled is the picturesque town beside the tourquoise lake with a magnificent castle dating from 1041AD perched upon the hill and a island in the middle of the lake with a stunning church on it. Take the 6kms perimeter walk around the Lake which will take say 2 hours allowing for stops and also climb upto the castle for outstanding views. Why not have a lunch and few wines up at the Castle, you may not come across many better settings and views than this.

Lake Bohinj

by Robmj

This place is postcard stuff.Plenty of walking options around Alpine meadows and charming villages. Also take the cable ar up Mt Vogel for stunning views over the entire area. The area is compact enough to be able to walk between the villages and many options exist for day treks into the mountains and alpine areas.A great place to stay is Ribcev LAZ which is a small town on the edge of Lake Bohinj. Plenty of accommodation options and excellent to make base camp to explore the area.

Škocjanske Jame

by curiouslumi

UNESCO World Heritage Site. Very impressive cave worth a visit. Probably largest cave hall in Europe. If you have little time and have to choose - prefer Škocjanse Jame over Postojna. It is much more "natural", less crowded by tourists, the guide is professional and knowledgeable, and the entrance is cheaper. The temperature inside is about 12C and is constant throughout the year so dress accordingly. It takes about 1.5 h to walk along the marked and lighted trail. The surface is wet but not slippery. As an added bonus there is a beautiful 30 min forest trail back to the parking and the small ethnographic museum in the area.Wonderful place to spend several hours. Consult the park internet site for the tours timetable. Aug 2008 we paid 14 EUR for the ticket.

Bled.

by Maurizioago

Bled is a village situated in northwestern Slovenia. It is well known for its lake. On this lake there is the only island in Slovenia. On this island there is a church. It dates from the 17th century and was built on an earlier church fron the 9th century. Bled also has a castle. They say this is the most ancient in all Slovenia.I stayed in Bled only some hours. Nor did I go to the islet or visit the castle. I had a long stroll on the path looking on the lake and took some pics. I went to Slasciarna Smon (it's a cafe-confectionery) to have a kremna rezina (see tip) and I had a very good rice with seafood at the restaurant opposite the bus stop. I think its name is Pla Prinicu.I hope to go back to Bled to visit the church and the castle. There are direct buses going from Ljubljana to Bled. The journey takes around 1 hour and a half.

Skofja Loka.

by Maurizioago

Skofja Loka is one of the most ancient town in Slovenia. There you could visit the castle. It was built before 1202 and rebuilt after the earthquake of 1511. It hosts an archeological, ethnological and historical collection. Other things worth a look in Skofja Loka are; the Capuchin's Bridge; Homans' House (today it's a cafe and a Chinese restaurant) and some churches. On the last weekend of june a Medieval event is held in this town; the Venus Trail (see tip). There are several buses going from Ljubljana to Skofja Loka every day. The journey takes around 40 minutes.
