Skofa Loka castle by kazakorange Yes the castle is great but as a visitor there is really nothing to see inside excepted : - a souvenir shop - a wine shop - a bar - a restaurant Money, money ! They knows that Bled castle is visited by thousands of tourists each year, so why should they bother offering something really interesting ? The collection showed in the castle is the poorest I've ever seen, dispatched in only 4 or 5 rooms. Okay, you'll see a nice view on the lake but it's not worth the 6 euros you have to pay for it.
Head south to Skofa Loka - This small town, located 30 kilometers from Bled, is really beautiful with small streets and old houses. The Skofa Loka's castle museum is great : you will see a wonderful ethnological collection with many tools from the past (agriculture, printing, hat making, every day life, ...) Leave a Comment

Hut near Triglav lakes by Zo72 Avoid going to the most popular natural places over the weekend. Everybody is going there. Be aware that Triglav is symbol of Slovenia so when something is about Triglav or leading there it might be veeery popular.
Go to less popular natural places, they are not worse at all, only less people go there. Go to most popular places during working days. Leave a Comment

Piran, Tartini square by Zo72 Short Slovenian coast doesn't thrill me with great mediterranean feeling. Slovenians usually spend their vacation elsewere.
Visit Socerb castle to see sea and Trieste. Visit Piran and Koper for they are beautiful cities. You can even jump into sea in Piran. ;) Avoid Portoroz (might be good place to party though).
Inner part of maritime province might prove more genuine. There seems to be beautiful nature there. Leave a Comment

Bled lake by Zo72 This must have been place to fall in love with some hundred years ago or shorter. It seems that its primary beauty changed it into unlucky experiment to build snob tourism place in Alpine paradise. Masses of hotels and overal feeling that makes me feel bad.
Some people find this place extremely beautiful. Walk around the lake and make few photos. Nearby canyon Blejski vintgar is great place to visit. Leave a Comment

A Bledian view by mtncorg I have heard people saying good and bad about Lake Bled. "Bohinj is better", "Bled is a touristic circus", etc.. They may be right from their perspective. I don't know. My time spent walking around the lake, on a qiuet day in September, was beautiful, peaceful and rewarding. It is a gorgeous lake, well deserving its reputation as a place to see in Slovenia
Walk around the lake, early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Sit on a bench and contemplate the little island, the mountains beyond, the boats drifting on the water. Hike above the SW end of the lake to the viewpoint over the entire scene. Take a boat cruise to the island - maybe a tourist trap there? Or walk up to the castle on the north end of the lake. For nice 'virtual panoramas' of the lake, castle and from the island, go to this website and click on the 'Bled' circle. The site is in both English and Slovene.
Lake Bohinj is an alternative and is a fine lake. But comparing the two experiences to me is comparing wine to beer. What is the point? Go and see both!! Leave a Comment

Salp Slavica by Linky_Pinky This is only under tourist trap as I was lead to believe it was just up a few steps .huh! nearly 600, but it was worth it glad I saw it . To get there in the first place, starting at the bus drop off near to the cable car, walk forward along the road for 4.5km, I jumped out in front of a fourwheel drive and flagged them down, a young couple from Virginia in the States wondered what the problem was, I asked them for a lift and they kindly agreed saved a long walk in the heat, anyway turned out I helped them too as they visited the waterfall too and as they were looking for accomodation I told them of a guest house in a lovely area which I saw them at later that day. On the map this is called Slap Slavica. Leave a Comment

Tolar banknotes used until December 2006 by JLBG It is always important to know how the money, Banknotes and coins of a country look like. Here are some of the banknotes you will use the more often. The Slovenian banknotes bear on one side important figures of the Slovenian history. These banknotes were replaced by €uro banknotes on January 2007. €uro banknotes are the same on both sides across the whole €uro zone. Leave a Comment

Tolar coins used until December 2006 by JLBG Slovenian coins are very elegant. One side bears an animal and the other side the value of the coin. Tolar coins were used until December 2006. The new €uros coins have one national side. As soon as I get them, I will put here the national face of the new coins. I borough to Wikipedia their description: € 0.01 : A stork, a motif taken from the former 20 SIT coin € 0.02 : The Prince's stone, where Karantanian dukes were installed € 0.05 : Grohar's painting A Sower sowing stars € 0.10 : Plečnik's idea for the national parliament, with the inscription "Katedrala svobode" (Cathedral of freedom) € 0.20 : A pair of Lipizzaner horses with the inscription "Lipicanec" (Lipizzaner) € 0.50 : Triglav, constellation of Cancer1 and inscription from Jakob AljaĎ's song "Oj Triglav moj dom" (O Triglav, my home) € 1.00 : Primož Trubar and the inscription "Stati inu obstati" (to stand and withstand) € 2.00 :·France Prešeren and the first line of the 7th stanza of Zdravljica (Slovenian national anthem) € 2 Coin Edge : S L O V E N I J A More detailed information on the €uro coins will be found on the Slovenian Government Public Relations and Media Office site Leave a Comment

by Willettsworld This is probably the biggest tourist trap in the whole of Slovenia as its right outside the biggest tourist attraction in Slovenia. There are all kinds of tacky stalls and shops that line the road up to the cave entrance that sell everything from photos on plates to tacky T-shirts and such like. Some of the stuff is quite interesting like the minerals and other rock formations but most of it is pure tat. Leave a Comment
